Cultural Celebrations and Events During week 7, many of our students participated in celebrations for Eid and Samoan Independence Day. Both of these days are special occasions for both cultures and are very significant celebrations. The students wanted to tell our school community a few things about these celebrations. If you or your family have an up coming cultural celebration and ceremony, please contact myself or Mrs De Rosa so that we can share it with our school community. Mrs Sandra Russell

Eid Eid is a celebration when the full moon comes out and it is the end of Islamic month of fasting. We fast for 30 days before and this is called Ramadan. We eat dinner and drink at night and fast during the day. Eid is when we stop fasting. During Ramadan and Eid we eat lots of dates. We have a celebration and people come to our house. People give money to us and we all eat together. By Zaheen Hussain 4/5W

Eid is about giving money to charity and to the poor people. Our parents pray for us and with us. Eid is a celebration and a very special day for my family. Some of my family fast for a month before Eid. When we celebrate we say “Eid al-Fitr” or we say “Eid Mubarake” By Rozer Gogna and Muhammad Hussain 3G

We have a party at a hall. There’s lots of food that all the families bring. We wear fancy clothes and dance. Some people don’t have food or water so we fast for them and to think about them before Eid. By Lina Jawed 3B

People come to our house and we pray and we eat. We give and get presents of clothes and shoes. We wake up very early and shower on Eid. Eid is a very special time for my

family. By Nafia Banguaa 1/2D

We visit my Dad’s Grandma’s house. Lots of our relatives give me money. We have a big dinner to celebrate. By Ali Hashimi 1/2D

Samoan Independence Day Samoan Independence Day is a special day for our culture. We go to a hall do a special dance that tells a story. We all eat taro and chop suey and pork buns. We wear clothes from our culture. Boys wear lava lavas and girls wear a traditional dress with Samoan patterns on it. We go to our church and say a prayer on Independence Day. By Sasoa Tagaloa and Javan Fuaivaa 4/5W My whole family is going to Liverpool to a big function centre. We are cooking special Samoan food for people of all different cultures to try and buy. We do some traditional Samoan dances. There will be lots of performances with people singing, dancing and wearing traditional clothing. Samoan Independence Day is a really big occasion for my culture. It is probably the biggest celebration that we have. By Ariki Teariki 6H We go to Liverpool to watch all the cultural dances and eat the traditional Samoan food.

My favourite food is sapa sui which is Samoan chop suey. We have a feast at home if we

don’t go to the festival at Liverpool. We wear our traditional skirt that has Samoan tattoo

patterns printed on the fabric. We also do a special flag raising ceremony.
