In TributeEdana Evans, 1926-2007

Retired SCVB team member Edana Evans passed away on September 18 of Renal Cell Carcinoma. Her last months were spent surrounded by family and friends. Edana is survived by her children, Barbara, Ed, Bill and Bridget, as well as son-in-law Robert, daughters-in-law Beverly and Linda, and cherished grandsons Max and Miles. Her local tourism family also recalls with great respect and affection the lady who tirelessly bolstered their industry – and made it a whole lot of fun, too.

Between 1983 and 1997, Edana Evans served as events manager for Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau. The title, however, did not come close to describing the grand occasions she orchestrated, nor the style with which she presided over them.

Edana’s events were fun, engaging and always well-attended, from professional development seminars to social mixers to the bureau’s holiday breakfast – an annual event that has become one of the local tourism industry’s largest.

“What was remarkable about Edana was that she not only got away with spiking the eggnog at a 7:30 a.m. breakfast event, but that she was able to convince her colleagues – myself included – to serve it while wearing reindeer antlers,” said Jim Cacabellos, CMP, Director of Sales at the Embassy Suites Bellevue and former convention sales manager at the bureau.

“Edana was unforgettable,” said Janet Hunter, Director of Sales for Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau. “ With her fabulous hats, penchant for fun and knack for planning outstanding membership events, she spread cheer and Seattle spirit far and wide. On a more serious note, she championed human rights and was devoted to her family and friends.”

“Edana was a special lady and I feel fortunate to have known her when I was learning how the industry worked,” said Mark Hewitt, President of Tillicum Village. “She was a real joy to work with, she loved Seattle and loved promoting tourism to this area. We’ll miss her, we’ll miss those hats and I’m sure she’ll be watching over us and making sure we do things right.”

PCMA Local Host CommitteesA broad-based effort on behalf of Seattle’s tourism community is needed to host a successful PCMA convention. Hundreds of volunteers have already signed on. Volunteers are especially needed during the convention (between the dates of January 9 and 17). To volunteer your time and talent to the 2008 PCMA Annual Meeting, contact Mike Biasini, Chair, Local Host Volunteer Committee, at [email protected]. Volunteers who commit at least four hours are eligible to receive a $100 discount on PCMA Annual Meeting registration fees (although registration is not required to volunteer).

Joan Cahill, SCVB Special Projects Director, oversees all host committees. Committee chairs and other host committee leaders include the following:

Jimmy BrightSCVB InternJimmy Bright is a 15-year veteran intern at Seattle’s Convention and Visitors Bureau who stepped into the spotlight (by dubious invitation) at the 2007 PCMA Annual Meeting in Toronto. There, he gave his boss, Don Welsh, a run for the podium (no easy task), and introduced himself as an unexpected, though strangely endearing, spokesman for the 2008 annual meeting in Seattle. During the past 11 months, he has relentlessly promoted meeting attendance through e-blasts, web site postings, unsolicited phone inquiries and global positioning and tracking devices.

Who is Jimmy Bright?Intern Extraordinaire. I’m a Seattle ambassador, public speaker, tour guide, concierge, sommelier, valet, protégé and all-around, good-to-go go-to guy. Oh, and a barista when the job requires it.

As a Seattle ambassador, you must embody the new Seattle destination brand. What about you is metro and what is natural? Admittedly, the bow tie nods to the renaissance man thing I’ve got working for me. As for natural, well, I enjoy looking at nature photography, especially in the SCVB Visitors Guide. The SCVB Meeting Planners Guide needs more nature photos, though.

How were you chosen for this high profile role in promoting the PCMA Annual Meeting?[fidgets] Well, that’s an interesting question and one that should be phrased in the proper context. I mean, the word “chosen” conjures visions of formal review committees and blue ribbon panels, and I think it goes without saying that many of the most important choices in business are made by the seat of one’s pants, off the cuff, in the throngs of creative energy and brainstorming. Those choices fly in the face of committee-speak, if you know what I mean?

No, but here’s a more important question. What about Seattle as a destination compels a meeting planner to bring business here? Is it the convention center’s reputation for excellence, the superior downtown hotel package, unique off-site venues, urban walkability, coffee on every corner or the impressive infrastructure of biotechnology, medicine and scientific research?Carmine’s Consignment on Battery is amazing for men’s top coats and spatz - you know, for the closing reception. I’ve taken many-a-meeting-planner there. And, the Pike Place Market is a must-see.

Last question: What book is currently on your nightstand?I read several books simultaneously. It keeps my mind sharp. Right now, Authenticity: What Customers Really Want and The Experience Economy – I want Joseph Pine II and James H. Gilmore to autograph them next month when they speak at PCMA. Also, Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell, and the draft 2008 SCVB Destination Marketing Plan – I’m helping them proof it, which is a typical intern grunt job but, again, it helps keep me sharp and on-mission.

Editor’s note:Thanks to (or in spite of) Jimmy’s work, PCMA annual meeting registration is buzzing along at a frenetic pace, and many who have never visited Seattle before have expressed excitement at attending the conference and exploring the region. “Jimmy the Intern” is actually the creation of Kevin Joyce in collaboration with The Workshop Events (www.workshopevents.com). Kevin is a performer and producer for live shows, music and video with EnJoy Productions (www.en-joyproductions.com) and host of The Seattle Channel’s Big Night Out, a monthly TV variety show.
