National Citizenship ServiceNational Citizenship Service (NCS) is a pilot programme in its second

year which gives young people aged 16 and 17 the chance to takepart in two weeks of activities designed to support their personal andsocial development.Introduced by the current Government and first run in 2011,participants spend two weeks away from home over the summer. Thefirst week is spent tackling an outdoor challenge and doing activitiessuch as rock climbing or trekking, and the second week sees theyoung people undertake a community project in their local area.NCS, delivered by charities, local businesses or social enterpriseorganisations at minimal cost, aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing together people from

different backgrounds.Conor, who met teenagers taking part in the NCS scheme with AFCBournemouth last year, said, Following the positive feedback from thethousands of 16 and 17 year olds who took part last year I amdelighted more than 20,000 young people have signed up for thissummer. The activities NCS offer encourage young people to develop intoresponsible adults with a set of skills which will enhance theireducation and career prospects.

A recent study by NatCen found that over 90 per cent of people who

took part in 2011 found NCS worthwhile and enjoyable, saying theygot the chance to get to know people they would not normally mixwith, had given them the chance to develop new skills they can use infuture, and that they were proud of what they had achieved.

    MPs plea for less elitist

    grammar schoolsMelanie Vass, Bournemouth Echo

    Wednesday 25th July 2012

A Bournemouth MP wantsgrammar school tests to be held inselected primary schools, toencourage more pupils from deprived backgrounds to apply.Conor Burns, who represents Bournemouth West, said there was aproblem with the towns grammar schools being seen as elitist bysome families. He believes many bright youngsters from under-privilegedbackgrounds are currently deterred from sitting the entrance exams by

the fact they are held in the grammar schools. Some parents simply cannot get to Bournemouth School orBournemouth School for Girls while others feel that it is just not forpeople like them, it puts them off, he said.I really think that if, for example, children from West Howe could go toElmrise, or Hill View or Kingsleigh to take the test, they would be morewilling to do so.Obviously you couldnt have pupils sitting tests in every school but ifyou could offer the opportunity to take it at a local school, I think thatwould really help.

He said the idea was now actively under consideration afterBournemouth School head Dr Dorian Lewis said he was open-mindedabout the idea.

Alistair Brien, head of Bournemouth School for Girls, said: If childrentook the test in their own school, it would encourage more to take it,which I can see makes good sense. However, we have 50 different feeder schools and I can see therewould be logistical problems with sending out exam papers securely todifferent sites. It is also worth mentioning we dont make pupils take the test in a bigschool hall, we do place them in classrooms with people from theirexisting school to try and make the process easier.
