Conor in the papers: Jurassic Coast 'saved from industrialisation' as Navitus Bay wind farm rejected Emily Gosden, Energy Editor, The Telegraph Friday 11th September 2015 Plans to build a giant wind farm off the Jurassic Coast have been thrown out by ministers after they concluded it would harm views from Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and England's only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. Developers of the Navitus Bay wind farm wanted to build up to 121 turbines, each 650 feet tall, in the English Channel near the Isle of Wight. Campaigners hailed a victory for common sense after the proposals they claimed would "industrialise and irrevocably damage" the Dorset coast were rejected, as first revealed by the Telegraph last week. The decision by Lord Bourne, the energy minister, followed an unprecedented recommendation for refusal from the independent Planning Inspectorate, which had recommended all 42 previous "nationally significant infrastructure project" applications it considered be approved. The Government concluded the turbines would have a "significant adverse impact on the perception of viewers standing on the coastlines" and would also adversely effect the enjoyment and use of the World Heritage Site in a way that was not "acceptable". John Beesley, leader of Bournemouth Council, said: "There is a huge sense of relief across Bournemouth today. Common sense has prevailed and our beautiful natural environment, coastline and dependent tourist industry have been protected for future generations. "The scale of public reaction to EDF and Eneco’s Navitus Bay proposals to industrialise and irrevocably damage the outstandingly beautiful and natural Dorset coast was unprecedented." Conor Burns, MP for Bournemouth West, welcomed the decision. "I have said from the very beginning that the Navitus Bay proposal would be bad for Bournemouth and bad for Dorset, threatening the UK’s only natural World Heritage Site and the tourism economy which is the lifeblood of my constituency," he said. "The developer should take note that we will fight any appeal with equal resolve. This scheme must now be at an end and the threat to our area removed forever.” Richard Drax, MP for South Dorset, said he was "delighted" with the decision. "This victory will preserve our beautiful coastline for countless generations of residents and visitors to come," he said. Dr Andrew Langley of campaign group Challenge Navitus said: “We regret that so much time and effort has been put into examining a proposal that was clearly flawed from the outset and in a zone that should never have been included in the national offshore wind farm plan. "We call on the developer to accept the government's decision and abandon its plans for good.” Green groups reacted angrily to the decision, arguing the Jurassic Coast's World Heritage status did not rely on the views and accusing the Government of an "ideological obsession against renewable energy". But Angus Walker, partner at Bircham Dyson Bell, said: "Characterising this as a huge blow for renewable energy is probably going a bit far. "All the other offshore wind farms promoted under the Planning Act 2008 have been approved and this one is something of a special case given its proximity to the Jurassic Coast – England’s first and only natural World Heritage Site. However, the Conservatives’ opposition to onshore wind is well known, and today’s decision suggests that near- shore wind farms are also now vulnerable." Stuart Grant, Project Director at Navitus Bay, said it was "disappointed" by the decision and would now "discuss the options available with our shareholders and update stakeholders in due course". Tory hails Jeb Bush's 'great idea' The Belfast Telegraph Thursday 17th September 2015 Conservatives have hailed a United States presidential candidate's call for Margaret Thatcher to feature on the next 10 dollar bill as a "great idea". Jeb Bush picked the former prime minister as his choice for the new note when questioned on the issue during a Republican presidential debate. Mr Bush admitted that such a move was "probably illegal" but told the audience "what the heck". He said: “I would go with Ronald Reagan's partner Margaret Thatcher. “A strong leader is what we need in the White House, and she certainly was a strong leader that restored the United Kingdom into greatness," he added. Baroness Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were close allies, with the former Conservative leader calling the then US president "one of my closest and dearest personal friends". Conservative MP Stewart Jackson said the former premier was a "very worthwhile" figure to be considered for the honour. He said: "It's a great idea. Margaret Thatcher is an icon and historic figure. "She, along with Ronald Reagan, was responsible for bringing in the conditions that brought down the Iron Curtain and saved people from Soviet tyranny and is a very worthwhile individual to be considered." Mr Jackson said he did not see any problem with a Briton featuring on an American bank note. "They have named their ships and schools after Winston Churchill so I don't see it being a problem," he added. Conservative Conor Burns, who was a close friend of Baroness Thatcher and hosted Mr Bush in the House of Commons last year, said it was a "lovely" gesture. He said: "It's wonderfully characteristic of Jeb to come up with such a lovely suggestion. "Lady T would have been absolutely thrilled. She used to say that when you got off the plane in the US you could smell freedom. "She would have also been appalled as she was a modest person. It's a shame there isn't a million dollar bill because for many of us she wasn't ten dollars, but a million."
