New Technologies for mining, excavation and
extraction of minerals
The world is and has been

The world is and has been looking and studying new
technologies ever since the cavemen discovered fossil fuels,
metals and minerals

coal during the Second World War. The Americans and Canadians are still

The Americans and Canadians are still studying how to make fuel out of the vast reserves of tar sands in North America
Drilling companies are trying new technologies all the time to get more oil out of existing wells
Fossil Fuel extraction There is an interesting product based on bauxite that is used to
increase the porosity of the area around an oil well. It is called proppant and it is produced also in India.
Drilling deeper wells was a challenge for Russians long ago when they opted for metals with better strength to weight ratio to drill deeper such as aluminum drill pipe.

drill deeper such as aluminum drill pipe. Gasification of fossil fuels is getting a new boost with the
invention of superheated steam treatment of fossil fuel creating high caloric value gas but leaving sulfur and other elements in the ash
Gasification of Pet Coke will be tested in India in a new pilot plant. And we plan to test Lignite as well.
Metallic and Non Metallic Mineral Extraction
The most spectacular successes here are the selective chemical extraction methods developed such a cyanide extraction of gold and other elements
7
and other elements But then there are also companies that have
developed many solvent extraction methods for other metals.
Bioleaching
Bioleaching for base metal extraction Copper from chalcopyrite (95%) Nickel/Cobalt bioleaching

Breakthrough Approach: Cytec's Flotation Matrix 100 Process for Mineral Flotation Benefits: Optimized reagent performance Enhanced recovery of all value minerals Increased yield
9
Increased yield Improved concentrate grades Accelerated implementation of recommendations
following initial needs assessment Significant cost savings
Who are the researchers that are looking for new and better ways to extract? Large chemicals companies such as Nalco
and Cytec and many others developed and are still developing new additives, solvents
12
are still developing new additives, solvents etc.etc.
Why: Because there is great commercial promise for these developments.
And note these are never developed in government research labs.
So what is the message here for Gujarat and India.
Dont reinvent the wheel Invite the successful companies to come to
India and Encourage Indian entrepreneurs to set up
13
Encourage Indian entrepreneurs to set up mineral extraction business together with those that already have the experience and know-how.
Is there enough left? As most of you know Gujarat has bauxite deposits
or at least had significant deposits. Over the last 10 or so years heavy exporting was done so we are not so sure if sufficient deposits remain to warrant a alumina refinery. Fortunately this export has now
15
alumina refinery. Fortunately this export has now been stopped. Gujarats great leader Shri Narendra Modi sanctioned an export stop last year and furthermore gave custody of all bauxite deposits to GMDC
Now we have a chance to reassess the bauxite reserves and qualities available.
Beneficiation to find more usable reserves
The quality of the remaining bauxite may be not as desirable as before.
So why do we want to built in Gujarat. The main reason is that there is the political will to
16
main reason is that there is the political will to built and alumina refinery.
And as we are determined to make it work we are now contemplating a bauxite beneficiation step, to be able to use the lesser quality bauxite also.
CAC As the bauxite in the deposits are not very
homogeneous we were told we likely to come across some high grade low iron bauxite.
To not waste this good bauxite on alumina refinery we plan to utilize it to make a high refinery we plan to utilize it to make a high added value product called Calcium Alumina Cement. This fast setting ceramic material is needed in Gujarats industrial expansion
Alumina extraction from Bauxite
Lets stick for a moment with the extraction of alumina from bauxite which I happen to have worked on for most of my career.
19
worked on for most of my career. Also here the one with the best extraction
technology and the lowest cost base has a chance of survival, like in any other mineral extraction business

India needs
5 million tons additional installed alumina capacity in the next 5 years and double that in the following 5 years
We want to set up soon one alumina refinery in Gujarat and will use the best available technology.
23
Gujarat and will use the best available technology. Not because we are so proud that we know this technology but because it gives the best economical extraction and responsible mineral reserve management. We plan not to waste one gram of bauxite or use one kWh more energy than is strictly necessary.
What India gets
These are commercial incentives to the project but guess what: These service the government goals also: To best utilize the minerals resources for the benefit of the
25
minerals resources for the benefit of the people of the state. The government gets the best deal without being in the business themselves.
