A BIKER whose brakes failed as he hurtled towards a massive drop believes God saved his life.

Chris Hyde’s journey to Christian-ity began while speeding down a US mountain on his motorbike.

As Chris zoomed towards a huge drop, he discovered his brakes had failed and was ready to leap from his out-of-control bike.

But he found he couldn’t let go and had a strange vision.

He said: “I remembered the face of a guy we had met in Tahoe. It was just a flash of him, nothing more.

THE Christian Party in Wales is cele-brating becoming the first faith based party to have a mayor elected.

Councillor Jeff Green, 47, started his term in August in Llandrindod Wells.

He told New Life: “I’ve been ac-cepted by the people of the town which is fantastic.

“I want to reintroduce biblical principles, like prayers before the town council meetings. I believe we have the right people in place so that this can happen.”

Jeff, who also runs a guest house with his wife, Sue, doesn’t shy away from talking about his Christian beliefs.

again Christian,” he said. “It’s a major part of my identity.

“I’ve seen the benefits of prayer in my own life and my business and I believe what the Bible says and know that it can work in this town.

“When we exalt Christ, we will see miraculous changes that we cannot orchestrate ourselves.

“It’s time that Christians raise their head in all spheres of public life and proclaim what we know to be truth so we can touch the lives of all those around us.”

OPTICIAN PLANS TO HELP PEOPLE IN AFRICA

MY FOCUS IS TO HELP GIVE VISION TO POOR

MONEY seized from criminals has been put to good use by a church – who have used the cash to convert a double-decker bus into a media facility for teenagers.

The Inside Out bus, de-veloped by Dundonald Elim Church, has new computers and sound mixing equipment.

The Department of Justice in Northern Ireland provided £90,000 towards the project by using money recovered from criminal assets.

Justice Minister David Ford said: “I have been very im-pressed by this project. It is unique, innovative and clearly appeals to young people.”

Many churches book a local hall or club or pub function room and Andy will provide the entertainment.People will have a great time but also get some food for thought!Andy combines the best of Elvis: rock, ballad and Gospel, and weaves in some stories of Elvis’s spiritual journey along with his own. A BRITISH optician who found God on an Australian beach has a vision for providing glasses for the poor in Africa.

Ian Squire, who has his own busi-ness in Middlesex, runs Mission For Vision, a Christian charity that has worked in Uganda, Ghana and Mo-zambique.

Ian, now 52, was hitchhiking Down Under when a car screeched to a halt and the driver told him to get in.

He said: “He told me he was about to drive past, but God had told him to stop and pick me up.

“He was on his way to church and soon I was surrounded by Christians saying I needed to believe in Jesus.

“I argued for hours but there was no doubting the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

“I felt I needed to escape, so they gave me a Bible and off I went. I re-member saying to God, ‘I’ll give you two weeks to reveal yourself through the Bible and if nothing happens I’ll know it’s untrue.’”

Ian continued hitchhiking across Australia but found himself glued to

his Bible. “I ended up in a very remote area and built a huge fire. That night God met with me and I knew I had to stop living my life my way.”

After reaching a beach one night, Ian knew he had to make a decision.

“I saw a man sitting on a rock. I was compelled to talk to him and he imme-diately told how Christ had changed his life. I believed in my heart and confessed with my mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord.”

Immediately after his turnaround, Ian felt a ‘calling’ from God that he would travel the nations to preach the gospel.

After returning to the UK, he opened an opticians in Shepperton and he launched Mission For Vision in 2003.

Ian, who travels overseas twice a year, added: “The mission uses op-tometry as a platform from which to preach the gospel.

“We provide glasses and fund cataract operations as well organise pastor’s conferences.

“We have been asked to help with setting up two Christian vision cen-tres in Nigeria and The Congo and are currently developing a training programme to teach basic sight test-ing skills and glazing for supplying spectacles.”

A GROUP of children in Romania became Christians following an out-reach held by British believers.

Members of City Gates Church from Ilford, East London, visited Sardu to work with missionaries Bob and Edith McDonald.

They led Bible teachings and creative classes for more than 60 children.

ROB’S LIFE NOW FULL OF JOY

A DRUGS baron left paranoid by his own addiction planned to throw himself from a motorway bridge.

But Rob Joy’s violent and seedy lifestyle changed after he found God.

He told New Life that the more his drugs empire grew the more paranoid he became.

And as he sunk into fear and de-pression, he cried out to Jesus to ask him to change his life.

A GANG expert believes the Church is the answer to the nation’s growing youth nui-sance problems.

Patrick Regan, who runs youth charity XLP, reckons children under the age of ten are now being groomed to join gangs that partake in violence and crime.

He says top gang leaders in London are earning more than £100,000 per year through illegal drug activities.

But Patrick, whose organisation holds events to deter young people from the gang culture, believes the Christian message is the answer.

He said: “I’ve often said to politicians that I think the Church is one of the best placed organisations to deal with this issue. We’re in every area across the country and we’re not just there for a few years as some organisations are.

“We don’t only have a four to five year term as politicians do – we’re there for the long haul, living and working in these communities – we should be one of the best placed.

“Lots of gang leaders have a real conver-sion experience when they discover they are made in the image of God, and that they’re loved and cared for.

“It really brings a transformation experi-ence when they encounter the hope that the gospel message brings.”

A GANG expert believes the Church is the

answer to the nation’s growing youth nui-

sance problems.Patrick Regan, who runs youth charity

XLP, reckons children under the age of ten

are now being groomed to join gangs that

partake in violence and crime. He says top gang leaders in London

are earning more than £100,000 per year

through illegal drug activities. But Patrick, whose organisation holds

events to deter young people from the gang

culture, believes the Christian message is

the answer. He said: “I’ve often said to politicians

that I think the Church is one of the best

placed organisations to deal with this issue.

We’re in every area across the country and

we’re not just there for a few years as some

organisations are.“We don’t only have a four to five year

term as politicians do – we’re there for

the long haul, living and working in these

communities – we should be one of the best

placed.“Lots of gang leaders have a real conver-

sion experience when they discover they are

made in the image of God, and that they’re

loved and cared for.“It really brings a transformation experi-

ence when they encounter the hope that the

gospel message brings.”

TABLE tennis star Arul Selvi – former number one in her native India – has revealed she’s a Christian.

The star turned her back on her Hindu upbringing after hearing about Jesus. “I was challenged to accept Jesus as my Saviour, as he had died for my sins.”

“A few months earlier I had gone to visit my grandmother. She had always been a typi-cal large Geordie housewife, 13 stone. But she had breast cancer and had shrunk to just six stone.

CHALLENGE“She was a Christian and said

to me, ‘I believe God could heal me but, if he chooses not to, I know where I am going, do you?’ To hear that phrase repeated was a real challenge. I accepted

Jesus as my Saviour soon after that and God has brought me and my family through so many things.

“My wife, Pauline, suffered a brain aneurysm about the same time I was sacked at Southamp-ton – just after saving them from relegation and picking up a man-ager of the month award!”

After Pauline’s recovery, Mer-rington announced his retire-ment from the game and took up his position with the BBC.

He added: “Our Saviour gives his love and forgiveness no mat-ter what our past is and opens the human soul to hope. Man, what greater message is there than that?”

GOD HAS GOT ME ON THE RIGHT TRACKS!

A CHRISTIAN athlete believes God is helping her as she trains to become a superstar.

Kate Mapham, 27, recently took part in the British Championships where she completed a 10k run, a 40k cycle then another 10k run.

She won her age category and was due to represent Britain at the Duathlon World Championships in France in September.

Kate, who was born in South Africa, is a teacher who works for Christian organisation Alpha, which is based in London.

She told New Life: “The amount of training I have to do is very

much full on and if I didn’t enjoy it then there’s no way I’d get up at 6am or train in an evening and miss out on social activities.

“But it keeps me going and I get my reward when I am in these competitions.

“I also see it as an opportunity for quiet time so I pray a lot and find it awesome.

“It’s such a pleasure to be out-side when the sun is shining – it’s all about the enjoyment.”

Kate’s exploits have so far seen her compete in Switzerland and Beijing, as well as regular tourna-ments in Britain.

Having grown up in a Christian home, Kate knew about God from a

young age but didn’t make a deci-sion for Christ until she attended Holy Trinity Brompton Church in London.

She said: “I went there and knew that there was something different. It was as if the speaker was talking directly to me.

“I did the Alpha Course and that’s when everything changed. It became a relationship to me rather than me doing something because I knew it was right.

“It’s an exciting journey and it’s incredible to have someone by your side who you can chat to and pray to. The guidance and strength God gives me is amazing, even when I’m training.”

You have everything to gain and nothing to lose if you accept Jesus into your life, says Paralympian Anne Wafula Strike

I WANT to share with eve-ryone today that Christ is real and I urge you to

accept him into your life and to become a Christian.

If you don’t believe in God, then why not try to believe? If you get to heaven then you won’t have lost anything.

In fact, there is nothing to lose at all if you accept Jesus and I would encourage anyone reading this article to ‘taste and see’ that he is a good God.

I’ve had difficult times in my life and the last two or three years haven’t been easy, but because I’m a Christian it’s made me deal with those situations so much better.

When you are a believer you approach crisis with such less worry. You don’t break down or get knocked out be-

cause you know that God will always bring you out of such troublesome times.

I’m not a perfect person, but I do know that the only reason I’m al ive today is because God hasn’t finished with me and he has a great plan for my life. He wants me to be a better person and is working on me continually.

But Jesus shouldn’t be treated like as a second hand shop – he’s not something you turn to because you’re desperate.

Just come to him the way you are and watch his power and love transform your life in a way that you could have never dreamed of.

SERENA Williams, argu-ably the world’s best ever female tennis player, has thanked God after her recent success.

The 30-year-old re-cently won a gold medal at the Olympics before being crowned champion at the US Open in September. She has been ranked number one on five occasions.

Williams (pictured above) took to Twitter to speak of her faith. She wrote: “Everything I have done in the past two or three months would not have been possible without God. I’m so grateful to know about him.”

NEW Chelsea forward Victor Moses has thanked God after he recovered from heartache to become one of the Premier League’s hottest stars.

The £9 million midfielder joined the Blues from Wigan in August. His parents were both killed in riots in native Nigeria when he was 11.

Moses, whose dad was a church pas-tor, said: “It has been a long journey and I just want to keep strong and work hard for myself, whether it’s football or not football.

“I have to thank God for being where I am, it’s like a dream come true and, if I keep working hard, who knows, I’ll prob-ably end up in Barcelona one day.”

THE chaplain at troubled Portsmouth FC believes God has helped the club through a turbulent financial time.

The South Coast outfit has nearly gone bust on several occasions in the last few years and was docked ten points last season after entering administration and being rel-egated to League 1.

But Rev Jonathan Jeffery, the club’s chap-lain, believes the Lord is answering prayer as the club’s off-the-field difficulties appear to be ending.

Rev Jeffery’s ‘Pompey Prayer’ has been picked up by the fans as the club turned to the Almighty in crisis.

He told New Life: “It wasn’t a prayer that was forced on everybody but a chance to recognise that God can still be at work through the tough times, as well as during the seemingly successful times. It’s been well-received.

“However strange it might sound given that the fortunes of the club have turned downwards a bit in recent years, God does actually move in mysterious ways.

“He is at work in the football club and is making it a righteous club that treats its people well, is involved in its community, is managed well and in every sense is giving glory to God through the way that it presents itself.”

DAVE Merrington is a Saint in more ways than one.

The retired football manager took charge of his beloved South-ampton for one season during the mid 90s, narrowly leading the Saints to Premier League survival.

But the BBC radio commenta-tor – who is a pundit for most of newly promoted Southampton’s big games – is also a committed Christian.

The 67-year-old said: “It’s good to stay in touch with the

game but I can honestly say that Jesus excites me as much, if not more, than football has done in my life.

“I am more excited now than ever. Becoming a Christian is the best thing that ever happened to me.”

SPOTTEDMerrington, who hails from

Chester-le-Street, was spotted by Burnley scouts as a young bud-ding footballer.

The midfielder played almost 100 games for the Clarets before moving to Bristol City.

But it was at Burnley when Merrington was to discover Chris-

tianity following a conversation with one of the club’s coaches, Joe Brown, known as ‘Holy Joe’ by the players.

“I was about 19 and we were on a trip to Germany,” he said.

“We used to pass time talk-ing about all sorts of things and this time the subject of religion came up.

“Someone asked Joe what he thought. He held his hands up and said, ‘The guy I follow (Jesus) has wounds for you and he loves you more than anyone will ever love you. He will never leave you or forsake you and he is worth ten minutes of your time because of ● Continued on Page 11
