!The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

While living in Japan many years ago, I had the opportunity to see how Japanese lacquerware was made. Lacquer comes from the sap of the lacquer tree and has been known in Japan since prehistoric times. It was initially used as adhesive to repair pottery and affix arrowheads to their shaft.

Lacquer can be applied to many materials — silk, wood, metal, leather and plastic. Its durability, protective surface and beauty make it a valuable and expensive substance.

The most beautiful and expensive pieces are those that are carefully handmade using techniques dating back to the 16th century. These pieces are exquisite; their surface, hard as a rock. I was told that, if done well, the lacquer would be as strong and protective now as in a thousand years.

I watched as the lacquer master applied a coat of clear lacquer on a piece that would be a bowl. His brush strokes were slow and rhythmic. The amount of lacquer on his brush was always just right, resulting in an even coat throughout. He did not rush. Between each coat he would wait. The coated surface must be dry before continuing.

“Resist hurry,” he would say. “Hurry makes the surface weak. Slow will make it strong to resist many things.”

Is your relationship with God strong enough to resist temptation? When we spend time, over and over again, in God’s Word, our resistance to Satan’s temptations will become stronger. There is no shortcut to resisting temptation. The veneer for resistance must be nurtured and cultivated, slowly and consistently, in the presence of God.

Daily, like the applied coat of lacquer, the Word of God will help you resist many things. Is your relationship with God strong enough to resistSatan’s temptations?

Thought for the Week !God’s Daily Word Use these passages to explore biblical insights on resisting temptation.

Weekly Challenge Change a behavior this week that causes you to give in to temptation. Whatever it is that presents you with a situation that challenges your resolve, eliminate it this week and see how it might help you make the right choices.

For the Family Have each family member identify a temptation. Pray together as a family, asking God for the strength to resist the temptation. Choose a meaningful verse (from the Daily Word section) and have each family member memorize it this week.
