For millions of children, Halloween is a chance to dress up, carve pumpkins and scare one another. While Halloween can be fun, there is also a dark side to its revelry: It has strong roots in paganism and flirts with the powers of darkness.!Halloween can present a challenge for Christian families. So, how should parents handle it?!Turn the day into a relationship-building tradition for your family. Consider a new name for the day, such as “Welcome Autumn Day” or “Crazy Costume Day,” and ask your children for ideas. !Use it for family time, dress up in positive costumes, and allow your kids to eat extra sweets. Family traditions don’t have to be gigantic — just memorable.!Establish a tradition of having a special meal with food you only eat on Halloween. Decorate the table using non-Halloween plates, cups and utensils. Make this meal something to look forward to every year.!Consider planning a pumpkin-carving project for Halloween night, with each family member carving his or her own pumpkin. Conclude the festivities by serving homemade pumpkin pie!

Spend the evening making fall decorations for your home. The changing season inspires just the right atmosphere for this occasion. Kids can collect leaves to use as decorations. Go to pinterest.com to search for fall décor ideas.!If your family gives out candy, you can also modify this tradition. As a family, pick two or three favorite Bible verses. Print them on address labels or cut them up into small slips of paper. Attach a verse to each treat. Not only are you spreading God’s Word, you are also doing a family activity. Dressing up in Bible costumes can enhance the experience.!Whatever creative alternative you choose, don’t forget to explain to your children why you are not celebrating Halloween the way the world does. Explaining your godly decisions helps kids make better decisions about how to handle their Christian faith.

Repeatedly he said, “Stay together. Always be within sight of each other.” The camp director repeated the phrase so often we tuned him out. We had no worries because we were smart enough to recognize and follow the trail markers. We felt confident that our hike was going to be fun and uneventful.

My youth group planned to hike in the Allegheny National Forest in Pennsylvania. The Allegheny National Forest is a true wilderness of more than half a million acres of pristine forests, beautiful scenic views and hidden treasures. Our destination was a waterfall, but hiking there and back would involve 20 miles of difficult terrain.

We started out excited and energetic, talking and laughing as we ticked off the miles. At some point, someone suggested we play hide-and-seek, and without hesitation, we began to look for the best places to hide. After a few rounds of the game, a number of us began to realize that fewer and fewer of us were gathering at the end of each round. Soon, only five of us stood in the middle of the trail. We had lost sight of the other six. We began to shout out their names one by one, only to hear an echo in return. We kept walking the trail but did not find any trail blazes to tell us we were on the correct one. To our horror, we realized that the individuals with the maps and compass were in the other group. We were lost on an unknown trail.

We proceeded cautiously, trying to recall any orienteering tips we had learned. The trail soon ceased to look like a trail as foliage began to cover our path. We backtracked

but still could not find any signs of the trail we should have been on. We hiked for hours, hoping that the next ridge would give us a panorama of the forest surroundings so we could get our bearings. It began to get dark and chilly, and we made the decision to spend the night. Though equipped with proper clothing and emergency blankets, we spent a cold and sleepless night huddled in the dark and foreboding forest.

In the morning, someone found a forgotten whistle deep inside their backpack, and we began to blow S-O-S in morse code. About noon, we heard a whistle response in the distance, and we began whistling and shouting our presence. A team of rangers and youth leaders soon descended upon us with hugs and tears.

As we walked back to camp in silence, in my mind, I heard the voice of our director saying, “Always stay together. It can cost you your life if you don’t.” We did not listen to him and chose our own way. Though we were found safe, it could have easily turned tragic. The warning, “Stay together,” was repeated over and over because our lives depended on it.

Ignoring God’s warnings can cost us our lives. Why do we keep disobeying?

The Back Page follows the Bible lessons that children and youth are studying and serves to help kids and adults continue the spiritual discussion at home and establish patterns of a devotional life.

Weekly Challenge If there is an area of your life where you’ve been in rebellion, confess it to God and ask His forgiveness. Memorize the text 1 John 1:9.!

For the Family Play a game with your family where you each try to stare at a Bible verse for as long as possible without blinking. Everyone else will try to distract the person staring at the Bible. Talk about what distracts you from focusing on God and how you can ignore those distractions and choose to follow Him.!
