New Hope’s Sharing Our Strength International team is planning another trip to Panama for families this Thanksgiving. Both groups are traveling under the umbrella of the Chesapeake Conference, which is building several churches and schools in Western Panama over the next few years.!Because of its stable government, Panamá has a strong national police force and infrastructure, which make it much safer than most of the surrounding countries. But beyond the skyscrapers and wide avenues of the city, many people are still suffering. Among them are Ngöbe-Buglé Indians, nomadic Indians who live on a reservation that covers a huge area of the mountainous Chiriquí province, who have not been able to make the transition into a modern, business and agriculturally based economy. The poorest of the poor, they live in shacks, wear used clothing and usually eat only once daily.!The Thanksgiving trip, which takes place Nov. 23-30, is an opportunity for families to serve together and includes time built in for relaxation and some sightseeing. The trip project involves finishing the building of one of the churches, painting and constructing a baptistry. A Vacation Bible School program for local children also will be offered. The cost is $800 per person (plus airfare), which covers trip insurance, in-country transportation, lodging at a beach resort, meals at the worksite and a Panama Canal tour.!About 20 spots remain open for the trip. Reservations will close July 15 to allow enough time to secure tickets and start planning the details. Don’t miss out on a Thanksgiving vacation you will never forget as you serve the people of Panama along with your church family! For more details and a trip application, visit  sharingourstrength.net/panama, or email [email protected].!

High School Mission Trip

Last week, nearly 30 young people (several from New Hope!) headed to the Chiriquí province of Panama for their summer mission trip, following up on a similar visit a year ago, when they helped build a church.!Below are a couple snapshots of the high school group. Please continue to keep these young people (and their chaperones, including the intrepid Keith Blair, leading the trip once again!) in your prayers, especially as they prepare to make the journey home this week!

Panama Misson Trip for FamiliesBy Caryn Wooster

On June 28, 35 youth and chaperones from the New Hope, Frederick and Atholton churches left for a mission trip to Panama. The team, led by New Hope’s Keith Blair, will finish construction on the Adventist school and compound and some churches in the mountains.

Though Panama is a relatively wealthy Central American country because of the Panama Canal, there are many places in the mountainous regions that do not see the wealth, including the Chiriqui region in the southwest portion of the country, where the team is working. Here are updates on the group’s activities, as reported by Keith Blair:

June 28 The flights were smooth and on time. The kids were great. Because we were wearing bright yellow T-shirts, everyone wanted to know who we were and where we were going. The pilot on our flight to Panama City gave us a shout-out on the speaker system.

We made it through immigration with no problems, got our bags, cleared customs and then started the short six-hour ride to Las Lajas. After we stopped for lunch, I think the lack of sleep caught up to everyone, as you could hear a pin drop. But that sleep rejuvenated everyone, as I woke to laughing, guitar playing and people enjoying themselves.

As I was listening to music on the bus, "My God is Awesome" started playing, and I thought, He sure is. Traveling with a group this size is not easy. A lot of planning went into this mission trip, and we've made it safely.

June 29

Sabbath in Panama. We all squeezed into the local church for the worship service. The local members were excited to see us. Miss Gladys translated the service for us. All of the songs were hymns that we used to sing when I was a kid.

June 30 One of the youths was talking to Pastor Pedrol and found out he has 40 churches to oversee. Pastor Pedrol also has no car and has to walk up to six hours into the mountains to go to his churches. We found out that we could buy a horse for Pastor for between $200-300. An effort is underway to raise the money for a horse.

July 1 We had quite a workday today. At every turn, we had obstacles, and at every turn, God provided. Our kids found out firsthand what the local community has to go through to get water. They learned how to mix cement by hand when the mixer broke. They learned how to work quickly when the rain came. And they worked hard no matter what happened.

Please continue to pray for our team as they respond to God’s call to serve in Panama.
