Dissemination
Follow-up Activities for Dissemination
Based on the results of a model project, follow-up activities for dissemination may be conducted to support the dissemination of introduced technologies by dispatching Japanese technical experts to the host country in order to provide training and technical guidance. Personnel from the host country may also be invited to Japan, if necessary.
Because further increases in population and energy consumption are anticipated in conjunction with the current strong economic growth of countries in the Asia-Pacific region, introducing technologies to increase the efficient use of energy is critical for energy conservation and sustainable development. In addition, since greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), which are closely correlated to energy consumption, have been linked to climate change, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has called for a reduction in their emission.

Coal is used to meet approximately 30% of world energy demand. Because of ample reserves and coal's relative economic advantage over other fossil fuels, it has become one of the world's most important energy sources. In many countries, however, proper pollution control measures are not employed, leading to air pollution caused by coal dust and acid rain. Actions must be taken to prevent environmental problems resulting from coal combustion. In addition, to avoid supply and demand imbalances, coal must be used more efficiently.

Japan is the world's largest importer of coal and depends upon imports to satisfy nearly all of its coal needs. Because domestic coal demand has been steadily increasing, it is important for Japan to demonstrate and disseminate its clean coal technology (CCT) in coal producing countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including China, India and Indonesia, in order to reduce the environmental impact of coal utilization and stabilize the demand and supply of coal.

International Cooperative Demonstrative Projects for Stabilized and Advanced Grid-connection PV Systems
Demonstrative Research Project on Micro Grid Stablization
Demonstrative Research on Power Supply Systems to Maximize the Use of Solar and Other Fluctuating Renewable Power Sources
In this demonstrative research project, a hybrid PV micro grid system, in which solar power comprises 50% or more of the entire power capacity within the micro grid, will be interconnected to a main grid to demonstrate the feasibility of connecting a micro grid system to a power grid and to ensure the micro grid can operate stably as a stand-alone system when disconnected from the power grid.
Under actual load conditions, this research study aims to optimize the utilization of fluctuating renewable power sources, such as solar energy, address technical issues, including how to compensate for instantaneous power interruptions and blackouts, and correct waveform distortions caused by harmonics.
Simulation Analysis of Grid-connected and Stand-alone Operation
For the above demonstrative research projects, analysis will be carried out by simulating power grid interconnection and stand-alone operation using systems configured to represent various power sources and loads.
Stabilization and stand-alone operation of micro grids utilizing 50% or greater (target value) fluctuating renewable power, such as PV and other renewable power sources (to be implemented at the sites of actual power demand) ・ Verification of stable power quality ・ Verification of effective supply control methods ・ Verification of response to load variations

Although rapid industrial growth in the Asia-Pacific region has boosted economic and social development, serious energy and environmental issues have been created by increased energy consumption, untreated wastewater and municipal and industrial waste. The International Cooperative Research Program was originally established by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (later reorganized into the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) in 1993 as part of Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA program) to address demands to solve energy and environmental issues through cooperative research activities.
