PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

SCHOOL NEWS

As you are aware the World Health Organisation has declared COVID-19 a pandemic. The situation continues to evolve with an increasing number of countries having sustained community transmission. In Australia the majority of COVID-19 cases are returning travellers or close contacts of cases, but there is evidence of limited community transmission in some states including NSW.

Efforts are now focused on considered actions to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community and protect those who are likely to experience more severe disease such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions. These steps are also essential to reduce the demands on the health system so that it can function effectively.

The department has been planning and operating in accordance with its pandemic plan to support the safety and wellbeing of staff and students. The simple advice is stay home if you are sick and remain at home until symptoms clear. If your child or a close member of your family tests positive to COVID-19 please inform the school immediately. School closure is associated with considerable costs. Studies have estimated that around 15% of the workforce and 30% of the healthcare workforce may need to take time off work to care for children. While this effect could be mitigated somewhat, it is likely that this burden will still be significant and will fall disproportionately on those in casual or tenuous work circumstances. For pre-emptive school closures to be effective, prolonged closure is required and it would be unclear when they could be re-opened. If there were still a large pool of susceptible students when schools are re-opened, there would be likely to be re-emergence of transmission in the community. School closures may still be considered late in the outbreak in anticipation of a peak in infection rates, for a shorter period of time. Short term reactive school closures may also be warranted to allow cleaning and contact tracing to occur.

At this stage, the spread of COVID-19 in the community is at quite low levels. It may be many months before the level of community infection is again as low as it is at the moment. A decision to close campus operations now on the current level of community transmission may therefore see schools closed for many months.

At this stage there is no plan to close Bowraville Central School however things change quickly so the school is currently planning to increase our capacity to deliver online and ‘at home’ learning packages. Already a significant amount of our learning can be accessed using google classroom and other online platforms however

we are aware that not all households have reliable access to the internet so ‘pen and paper’ work will also be developed and if it looks like the school will close or break early for the school holidays we will send work home.

All assemblies, excursions, inter-school sporting events, overnight camps and seminars have been cancelled until further notice. At this stage we are still actively planning for camps and sporting activities later in the year but these might need to be postponed or cancelled depending on advice from the Health department.

Local Schools Community Fund Success – 18 Brand New Mountain Bikes

Students at Bowraville Central School are set to get a whole lot more active thanks to a Local Schools Community Fund grant. Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan said the innovative project would greatly improve the students’ wellbeing and physical health.“Students are benefited by having fun, physical education activities while at school,” Mr Conaghan said. “Our Government has invested $15,545 here, plus a total of $50,066 in other wellness and physical activity initiatives at other schools throughout the Nambucca Valley and Coffs Coast through the Local Schools Community Fund. “We promised to provide better opportunities for students and this great mountain biking project is one way we are helping local schools to do that.” Our Principal, Mr Taylor, said “the program aims to inspire an active lifestyle to students who may not have access to or be able to afford a bicycle of their own. We are very excited about this opportunity”. The successful grant consists of 18 mountain bikes, 18 helmets and a service plan. These bikes will provide the opportunity for BCS students to engage in healthy outdoor fun in and around our community. Students will improve their riding skills, learn bike safety and the responsibility of maintaining the bikes. They will now have Cycling added to their sport choices or go riding on special PBL reward days making good use of new local bike paths and dedicated areas like Jack’s Ridge.Year 10 PDHPE, Year 5/6 students and some teaching staff took the bikes for a test ride around the school yesterday. Once on the bikes it was almost impossible to get them off – a very good indication of the success of this project.

Careers Day at North Coast Regional Botanic GardensYear 9 and 10 students from a number of local schools spent at day at the Botanical Gardens in Coffs Harbour investigating careers in Agriculture, Botany, Horticulture, Ecology and Floristry. Students attended workshops from specialists in many areas including Agricultural Science, State Forestry, National Parks and Office of Environment and Heritage. The beautiful Botanic Gardens were a visual feast and the perfect venue to inspire the students in their future careers.

Big Vegie CrunchRecently our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participated in the state wide ‘Vegie Crunch’. There were lots of smiles and cries of ‘yummy’ as they crunched their way through platters of fresh vegetables provided by our local Woolworths.Vegetable Week, featuring The Big Vegie Crunch, is a free school-based health promotion event that is funded by NSW Health. Only around 6% of Australian children eat enough vegetables and events like this can help to encourage kids to eat more vegetables.Established in 1991, Healthy Kids Association is a health promotion charity that works to reduce the incidence of diet-related diseases in children such as obesity. It aims to educate and empower families, children and school canteens to make the healthiest choices possible. Its nutrition philosophy is one of balance that promotes the

five core food groups, variety and mindful eating. Staffed by dietitians, teachers and health educators, Healthy Kids provide a range of services including a toll-free telephone enquiry line, email support, canteen menu reviews and more.

Harmony DayHarmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Bowraville Central acknowledged Harmony Day on Tuesday 17th March by wearing the colour orange as it represents freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. The canteen had a variety of culturally diverse foods for sale on the day.

How many times can you fold a piece of paper? Make a guess, then go ahead and give it a try. Rip a piece of A4 out of a notebook and fold away! Or you could even try it with toilet paper, if you can spare it! Results are on pg 6.

Vaccinations Year 7 and Year 10NSW Health Vaccinations for Year 7 and Year 10 will occur at school on Monday 23rd of March. Notes have been sent home in Week 2 and need to be signed and returned. Extra notes can be collected from the front office. Free vaccine is only available at school to students who have a signed consent form while they are in Year 7 (for diphtheria or HPV vaccination) or Year 10 (for meningococcal ACWY vaccination).

Agriculture News

RYAG Sheep - Tori Harrison, Year 9On the 3rd March to the 7th of March, Braeden and I travelled to Walcha for Rotary Youth in Agriculture (RYAG) Sheep. It was such an amazing experience. When I first arrived, I was nervous and shy, because I didn't know anybody and I have never really had much to do with sheep before going to RYAG.I quickly made friends and realised that I was not alone in my lack of sheep knowledge. We stayed at the showground and slept in our swags, we were looked after by the Rotary mentors. The program included hands-on workshops covering selection and judging of rams, embryo transfer, low-stress stock handling, whole farm management, stock freighting, assessing pastures, drone demonstrations, genetics, carcass scanning, butchering, shearing, wool classing, fibre testing, dog training and more. My favourite workshop was the working dog display and the ram judging event. At night we had fun activities and played night time footy. On the very last night we attended the RYAG Sheep Gala where we all modelled woollen dresses and vests for the event. RYAG Sheep was hands on and packed full of fun and I would recommend it to anybody who is interested in agriculture. I still prefer to work with cattle but I won’t ever forget attending RYAG Sheep and meeting the people I met. Huge thanks to Rotary Nambucca for sponsoring my RYAG experience.

RYAG Sheep – by Braeden Johnson, Year 9It was an extremely fun experience and I would LOVE to return next year. We were looked after so well and everything we did was hands on. My favourite workshop was the ram selection one, as the presenters discussed the good and bad attributes of each animal.Everyone who attended was friendly and easy to get along with, I made some great friends. I think anybody who chooses to attend next year will not regret their decision. Thanks to Rotary Macksville for sponsoring my attendance I feel honoured to have had the experience.

Answer to Maths Problem: I will be very surprised if you could fold it more than 7 times. Why? Because even with the thinnest piece of paper, the thickness of the paper is doubled every time you fold. If the thickness of the paper is 1/100th of a cm (0.01 cm) by two folds it will be 0.02 cm, by three it will be 0.04 cm. This might still seem pretty thin but as we continue, the thickness keeps growing exponentially. By 7 folds the thickness of the paper is 1.28 cm!! I can't imagine folding paper over a cm thick, can you? By 10 folds, the paper would be 10.24 cm thick and by 30 folds the imaginary piece of paper would be almost 105 metres thick!! If you want to see this explained in a fun way, Google "how folding paper can get you to the moon" and watch the video

Yu-gi-oh Champion Series (YCS) with Fletcher Mason-Vidler from Year 9On January 11th I competed in the Yu-gi-oh championship series. Yu-gi-oh is a card game in which two players attempt to defeat each other by decreasing their opponent's Life Points (down to 0) using a collection of monster, spell, and trap cards. I and 750 odd other people competed for an invite to the World Championship Qualifier 2020 tournament at Sydney ANZ Stadium. I had a couple of near misses but in the end, I came 454th out 750 with 2 out of 7 wins. I was expecting it to be a lot easier but going from a group of 5 people to a tournament was a pretty big jump. In the end, I had the time of my life, meeting new people that are into the same stuff as me, just getting better at the game and how to step up my game in general."

CLO CORNER

I was pretty excited to help unload 18 new mountain bikes and helmets that were delivered last week. Thanks to the Local Schools Community Fund grant these bikes are now the property of Bowraville Central School and will provide endless opportunities for students to improve their physical and mental health and to add cycling to their sport choices. Federal Member for Cowper, Pat Conaghan was unable to attend the school to make the official announcement of our grant success but he has sent his congratulations through his office.

BCS STAFF IN FOCUS

final in Melbourne last week with 86,000 other people – definitely a highlight! I’ve also found myself managing a professional esports team - that’s competitive computer gaming to the uninitiated (as I was a few months ago) – we operate within ‘Esports High Performance Centre’ at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Interests: Family & sport- no time for much else! I still play AFL (and hope to this year) after discovering a love for playing the sport in Perth. I also attend as many women’s sporting matches as I can - partly because of work, but mostly because I love it! Life outside of sport revolves around family, keeping the kids occupied mostly. They’re 3 & 1 and have a far more active social life than I do. Memories of BCS: Oh where to start?? The lifelong friendships, wonderful teachers (especially our Ag/Science teacher!), the individual care every student received. I loved my time at BCS and will always cherish our unique school experience; what other school offers pony club, canoeing and surf lifesaving for sport? Or would give you full marks for building a drop dunny for an assignment? Or take

enjoyed watching students grow and learn through their years at Bowra.Hobbies/Pastimes: These days my hobbies revolve around my 2 kids. I like gardening, building stuff, the ocean, pasta and recently I got back into skateboarding.Other comments/interesting facts: While in Arnhem there were many adventures. Once there was a flood and I was stuck in my house by flood water and crocodiles for a week. Another time I had to take cover from a cyclone. I’ve been zapped by lightning and stung by box jelly

BCS ALUMNI - OUR PAST STUDENTS

Name: Kate ArgentWhen did you go to BCS: 1989-1999 (K-Year 10) Where did you go and what did you do when you left BCS: I completed Year 11 & 12 at Macksville, then studied a Bachelor of Commerce at Sydney Uni. After uni I headed to England, and spent 6 years working, travelling and playing lots of sport. I also met my husband, Tim, who I then brought back to Australia - but only as far as Perth, where we spent the next 6 years. It was there I started working in sport, first as the commercial manager for the East Fremantle Football Club (AFL) and then at the WA Football Commission in a strategy role. While in Perth I had my two gorgeous sons, Max & Finn. What are you doing now: We moved to Sydney at the end of 2018, and I’m now the Chief Operations Officer for Minerva Network, a not-for-profit that supports elite female athletes in their career development. We run workshops, networking events and a mentoring program, where athletes are mentored by high level businesswomen. It’s a fantastic organisation to be a part of with plenty of perks: as part of my role I was at the T20 Women’s World Cup

you on excursions to Jindabyne, the Gold Coast and Dubbo for a netball tournament, and let’s not forget the infamous Gibraltor trip, which included a stink bomb on the bus, a broken arm and rivers running through tents!Sports Of course were an integral part of my school days; afternoon sport of Woods’ rules cricket, one-handed netball or softball. Playing/training for netball 5 days a week, until the netball team became the basketball team, soccer team, softball team, touch footy team…The most everlasting memory is of course the friendships – some from Kindergarten (or even pre school) all the way to Year 10 and beyond. We don’t see each other often anymore, but it’s like no time has passed when we do catch up. I hope you all know how special you are to me.

Name: Daniel ConstantinouWent to school at : Newport Public and Pittwater High SchoolExperience/Background: My wife, Danielle, and I moved to Bowraville 10 years ago. Before that we were in Arnhem Land. I also taught in Rarotonga, Cook Islands and the Ngaanyatjarra homelands in the Gibson Desert in Western Australia.Position/role at Bowraville Central School: I work alongside some great staff in ‘Room 43’ the Secondary Multi Category (MC) class. I started working at BCS mid 2010. I have

fish. Recently I discovered my great grandfather was Italian which has strengthened my bond with pasta.

Your child will do the NAPLAN tests online in 2020Federal, state and territory education ministers agreed that all schools will gradually transition from the current paper-based NAPLAN to NAPLAN Online in order to provide a better and more precise assessment that is more engaging for students.

State and territory education authorities will determine when their schools move online. The current plan is for all schools to transition to NAPLAN Online by 2021.

One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, in which the test presents questions of higher or lower complexity depending on a student’s performance.

Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.

Why do students do NAPLAN?The National Assessment Program – Literacy andNumeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.

NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians

are achieving important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

What does NAPLAN assess? NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through their regular school curriculum. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials.

As students are assessed on the same literacy and numeracy curriculum content, regardless of whether they complete the test online or on paper, results for both formats can be reported on the same NAPLAN assessment scale. To find out more about NAPLAN Online, visit nap.edu.au

How can I help my child prepare? On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so.

Help your child prepare by reassuring them that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and by reminding them on the day to simply do their best. ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation for NAPLAN or the use of services by coaching providers.

Ensuring students are familiar with using devices, typing on them and navigating through programs is a part of student learning and a requirement of the Australian Curriculum from the first year at school.

NAPLAN Online is not a test of keyboard skills. There are variations in how fast and well a student can type – just as there are variations in how fast and well a student can write by hand. Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper.

Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the types of questions in the tests and will provide appropriate support and guidance.

See the type of questions and related functionalities available in the NAPLAN Online assessment at nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site
