PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

SCHOOL NEWS

Easter Hat Parade

Obviously, we couldn’t have our usual parade this year so parents and staff were invited to create an Easter Bonnet and send a photo to the school. The photos were turned into a video and posted on the school Facebook page in what was our first ‘virtual’ Easter Hat Parade. Thanks to all who participated.

The Premier and Minister for Education have announced a phased operating model for NSW schools during COVID-19. The new model will see students being reintroduced to some face-to-face learning on campus starting from week 3. We have provided our plan via our school facebook page and within this newsletter. We are very excited to start seeing smiling faces back. We have missed the students. Here's what you can expect from each phase of the plan.

At all times• Schools are safe places for students, teachers and

staff.• All students engage with a single unit of work.• Keep up-to-date with your school’s communications

to make sure you receive important messages about timetable changes.

• Any identified cases of COVID-19 will continue to be managed in line with health advice, including temporary school closures where necessary.

Students at school at least one day per week• Schools have discretion for establishing which group

attends on which day, please see the plan.• Families who need to send their child to school

every day may continue to do so and no child will be turned away.

• Classes are split across different spaces and break times can be staggered.

• No excursions or inter-school activities.• Continued enhanced cleaning and hygiene supply

arrangements.

You can now• Send your child/children to school one day a week

(four days a week for Year 11 and 12, 2 days a week for Kindergarten).

• You are encouraged to keep your child at home for the rest of the week wherever possible.

• The school canteen will remain closed until the students return full-time.

You must continue to• Follow your school’s advice regarding changes to

drop off and pick up, including staying in your car when dropping off and picking up your child/children if safe to do so.

• Maintain social distancing by avoiding gathering outside of school gates.

• Make sure your child/children have access to lunch and snacks, we also encourage them to bring their own stationery, hand sanitiser, water bottle as sharing is not encouraged.

• Support your child/children to continue learning at home on remote learning days.

• Communicate with your school via email and phone wherever possible

• Follow health advice and keep your child/children at home if they are unwell.

Best Regards,Dave Taylor

Agriculture NewsDid you know mushrooms are the sixth most valuable horticultural crop grown in Australia with 80% of Australian households regularly purchasing fresh mushrooms? In the 1970s, most mushrooms eaten in Australia were sold in cans. Today 95% of the mushrooms we consume are fresh and grown in Australia. This term Year 9 and 10 Agriculture are undertaking a unit on mushrooms. The ‘Lets Mushroom’ unit will provide students with an understanding of the lifecycle of a mushroom as well as the value to our economy that mushrooms provide. Each student has been provided with a mushroom grow bag that they will have to care for. The mushroom growbag will transform from a mixture of sugarcane mulch & grain to a mycelium filled bag that is ready to fruit with White Oyster Mushrooms. Students will then be required to undertake a spore print as well as cook a delicious meal using the oyster mushrooms they have grown. Students were also asked to create a mushroom emoji that had a superpower.Recent changes to on-line learning have meant that teachers have got to be creative when planning our units of work, and hopefully the Ag students are enjoying the process of being mushroom farmers this term.Year 9 student, Beau, has certainly been enjoying growing his mushrooms, as is obvious in the photos he has sent in. Beau has also created an ‘invisibility’ mushroom emoji. Beau could have a future with Google creating emoji's or perhaps he might even consider a career being a full time mushroom grower.

BCS STAFF IN FOCUS

after riding them to school. On my last day at Bowraville Central I went to the bus lines to shake hands and say goodbye to everyone and to my surprise one of the boys (I think his last name was Helliwells) took my hand and said ‘goodbye sweetheart”! I also remember how sad I was to leave my dog behind when we moved but the lovely school cleaner, Dorrie Crowe, took him in. It was exciting to go back recently and have a look around the school and relive my time there even though it looks very different from when I was a student. It was good to see the Indigenous children now at Bowraville Central School as there were no Aboriginal enrolments when I went to school there. I do remember an Aboriginal girl named Eva or Eve Ballangarry from Bowraville who had the most beautiful singing voice and I thought she could’ve become famous with that voice.

Interests: Music, travel and family.Other comments: Bowraville has such a special place in my heart.

BCS ALUMNI - OUR PAST STUDENTS

Name: Pat Simmons (nee Donohue)Years at BCS: Mid 1950’s from Year 2 to Year 6. My father, Frank Donohue, as the (very strict) Principal and the Year 6 teacher. We lived in the school house which is now the school office. I was the youngest of 6 children.Where I went when I left BCS: The family moved to Riverstone in Western Sydney where I completed my education. I worked in a finance firm in Parramatta and with Singer Sewing machines. Then I worked in ‘Alert Radio and Music’ shop. Music was a big part of my life. My mother won medals for music and I was a singer in an all female quartet called ‘Trish and Friends’ who had a regular spot at an Italian restaurant. We also won an Acapella contest on the Gold Coast. I married Milton in 1964 and we had 3 boys. Milton was a school teacher who went on to become a Principal. We moved to Kingscliff in 1986. I now also have 2 beautiful grandchildren.Memories of BCS: I have so many memories. It was such a happy place where everyone knew each other. I remember teachers like Mary Kelsey and Claire Marland. I didn’t wear shoes to school and there was no set uniform. The canteen was across the road from school at Purkiss’ shop (what is now the old butcher shop). My brothers and I used to ride our scooters at full speed and scare our neighbours. I remember the school had a horse paddock (now the community garden) where students could leave their horses for the day

Name: Kahlia Fletcher-Smith.

Went to school at: I went to a few different schools when I was young but once we settled in this area I went to Raleigh and Bellingen schools.

Experience/Background: After completing a degree in Primary Education and Indigenous Education at Southern Cross University in Coffs Harbour, I began my teaching career at Bowraville Central in 2019 on the Year 3/4 class. This year I am teaching Year 4/5/6 while Mr Rushton is on leave.

Interests: I love art and yoga and I sing with a Gumbaynngirr choir in Bellingen. I am mum to two lovely daughters, Indy and Lola.

Other comments: I feel very fortunate to be teaching at Bowraville Central School.
