PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGESchool attendance Students must not attend school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms. Schools will make appropriate arrangements to return students home if they become unwell at school. Students should be at school unless: • they have a medical certificate which states that they

are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition and the expected timeframe

• they are currently unwell. Latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW Check the Latest COVID-19 case locations in NSW and follow the recommended actions if you have been in a location where there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19. We encourage members of the community to monitor this site. Please follow the relevant health advice if you have been at any of the locations at the specified dates and times. The locations along with the times and dates of when the cases were identified can be found on the NSW COVID-19 website. Tightened NSW-Victoria border restrictions The amended Public Health Order changes will have an impact on students and staff traveling across the NSW-Victorian border. From 7 August, the border restrictions will be tightened further with the border zone defined to townships along the Murray River including Mildura, Wodonga and Echuca. Under the updated Public Health Order, any person who already has a valid day school visitor permit will continue to be able to use this permit for 14 days, until midnight on Friday 21 August. This permit will expire after Friday 21 August. From Friday 21 August, for people living outside the border zone in Victoria, permits will only be considered for the following persons: • Students who attend special purpose schools.

Students attending a School for Specific Purposes will be eligible for a special permit through the NSW Government website.

• HSC students and HSC teachers. Further information regarding the exemption process for HSC students and teachers will be provided next week.

Please note that Victorian residents who reside outside of the border zone will not be able to enter NSW to attend school unless they obtain an exemption. Excursions and CampsSchool camps and excursions remain on hold for Term 3 given the recent increase in community transmission of COVID-19 across NSW. Updated advice on when school excursions and camps can recommence will be communicated to all schools following further discussions with NSW Health later in Term 3. In the

Community MeetingWe are going into a new planning cycle and I would really like to consult widely with the community re our Strategic directions. Due to COVID-19 this is difficult but not impossible. An emerging theme we have at school is ‘Together, we grow’. I am really keen to unpack this with the community and discuss how we can work together to improve learning, facilities, school – community relations, and post school options for our children. The new Bowraville Education Campus is going to contribute to this and may be an opportunity for the community to learn side by side with students. The new logo and information package should be ready by the next newsletter. Watch this space and if you haven’t liked the school Facebook page I encourage you to follow it as we will use it to communicate as well. COVID-19 UpdateAll students should be learning on campus unless they are unwell or have a medical certificate to support their absence. All students and staff who reside in or have visited Victoria must have a permit to enter NSW and are required to comply with health restrictions relevant to their permit which may include the need complete the 14 day self-isolation period commencing the last day they were in Victoria. NSW Health has requested anyone, particularly those who have been in Victoria and are unwell or have flu-like symptoms, arrange to be tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the COVID-19 clinics. Schools continue to be safe, and operations are in line with Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and NSW Health advice. Under this advice, schools are not required to conduct widespread temperature screening or mandate the wearing of a mask. All schools will be vigilant when implementing infection control, physical distancing and personal hygiene protocols to protect the health and safety of students and staff. Schools will promote the need to follow good hygiene practices such as: • regularly washing hands • avoiding sharing drinks or food • coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a tissue

which should be discarded immediately • filling water bottles from bubblers rather than using

the bubbler directly. The activities that are permitted at school will be conducted in a way that is safe and appropriate in the current environment. Those that remain on hold will be reviewed during the term and will recommence when appropriate based on health and other relevant advice.

Year 7 Geography

Year 7 are doing field sketches in the sun for Geography. They are developing their skills in observation and drawing and labelling what they can see.

meantime, schools can continue planning for excursions and camps to resume from Term 4. Visitors to the schoolVisitors are still not encouraged and alternative arrangements are preferred such as phone and zoom meetings. Parents are still asked to minimise their contact with the school and not gather in large numbers outside the gate in the mornings and afternoons. Any visitor gaining access to the school will be on my discretion. All external visitors, contractors and volunteers to a school site are required to sign the External Visitors to the School Site form each time they visit the school site. Visitors will abide by their obligations to comply with the health advice of the day, including hygiene and distancing requirements. The visitor must provide personal contact information to the school to be used in an emergency or when performing contact tracing if required. Schools should keep the form securely and confidentially for a period of 4 weeks.

Best Regards,Dave Taylor

SCHOOL NEWS

Lots of Laptops for Lucky Learners

Last term, at the end of May, Bowraville Central School was contacted by Variety the Children’s Charity. Bowraville Central School had been identified as part of a community in particular need and the charity wanted to offer all BCS students from 5 years old to 18 years the opportunity to apply for their own laptop through the Tech 4 Schools grant. Staff and parents got to work compiling and submitting applications by 30th June. It was with great delight during July that emails kept arriving announcing the success of applications. A final tally established that 129 laptops had been granted to students at our school. That fact is worth repeating – 129 students from Kindergarten to Year 12 received their very own laptop through the TECH 4 School grant. The laptops came with 4GB installed capacity, 128GB capacity and other great features. Each laptop also came with a year’s technical support from Harvey Norman. Variety representatives said ‘Variety believes all kids deserve a fair go and right now, we believe we can best achieve that goal for kids by facilitating access to education technology supplies. We see a laptop as being essential to learning’. These laptops will improve student access to learning both in the classroom and at home. However, the generosity of Variety has done more than provide this access, they have hugely lifted the spirits of many who have faced hardships over the past year.

What some of the students said about their new laptops:Ryan: It’s good. I can do my Maths homework on it.Saira: It has been very helpful and to be given one was very generous.Briana: I don’t think we could have afforded to buy one ourselves.Savannah: You don’t randomly get given a laptop. That is so generous.Megan Cochrane

BCS STAFF IN FOCUS

Name: Scott StandleyWent to School at: Ballina High School.Experience/Background: I have filmed videos and written magazine articles about skateboarding, travelling overseas to the USA, Japan and Europe. I’ve been at BCS for a year - I am half way through a teaching degree at Southern Cross University.Position/Role at Bowraville Central School: Part of the amazing SLSO Staff.Hobbies/Pastimes: Fishing, Skateboarding and avoiding Covid-19.Other Comments: The students and staff have been working together to build a skate ramp. I look forward to seeing the final product.

BCS ALUMNI - OUR PAST STUDENTS

helped drive me to pursue a career in the media industry. Interestingly enough, during my university internship at Elastic Studios (an advertising production company) I met the brother of the guy I did work experience for in year 10, a very small world it seems.Interests: Just like when I was back at Bowra, I still enjoy filming and photography. I am also a part of an amazing community of Larpers. Before covid, I would meet up with a group of around 30 people and participate and play LABG (Live Action Battle Game). It is similar to paintball or laser tag but with swords and arrows and more objectives. It is a great activity and a fun way to get exercise and make heaps of incredible friends.Other comments: Try to keep a positive attitude and be kind to people, don’t allow the negativity of other’s affect you too much. You are much stronger than you may realise but it is not weak to seek help if you need it. Small acts of kindness can go a long way, something as simple as a friendly hello to a stranger can really brighten a person’s day.

Name: Rose-Cherie GaleaWhen did you go to Bowraville Central School - what year(s) /what class(es): Kindy to Year 12 from 2001 to 2013Where did you go and what did you do when you left BCS: I got my Certificate IV in Interactive Digital Media from Coffs Harbour TAFE and then moved to Sydney to study at Western Sydney University. I graduated my Bachelor of Communications majoring in Media Arts Production in May 2018, one month after starting my job at Channel 9.What are you doing now: I work full time at Channel 9 Sydney. My role currently is a news exchange operator which means we receive all of the raw news related vision for the Today Show, Today Show Extra, News and A Current Affair and we put it into the system. There is more to it but that’s the basics. I hope to continue to climb the career ladder either at Channel 9 or somewhere in the Broadcast media as it is a pretty stable job, especially during this current pandemic climate we are all in.Memories of Bowraville Central School:One of the many things I will always be grateful for was Mr Briggs helping me organise my work experience in year 10. I was able to do 3 days at ABC Sydney, 2 days at 2 Feet Films, 2 days with a Sydney photographer and 3 days at M&C Saatchi. This was a really valuable experience and really

School UniformHere are 3 reasons why school uniform is extremely important – 1.School uniforms make us a team. I can’t imagine that any student shows up to play weekend sport (when we were allowed to) without the correct team sport uniform. It’s all about team pride.2.It puts all of the children on a level playing field. There is no social exclusion or discrimination when everyone wears school uniform. No one has better clothes than someone else.3.It prepares the students for later on in life. A lot of adults work in an occupation that require them to wear a uniform. The Department of Education has a dress code that all staff (teachers, principals and school administration staff) have to adhere to. Wearing a school uniform is good practice and preparation for adulthood. Please ensure all items are labelled with your child’s name. If your child's name is on the items it makes it very easy to return them to the rightful owner. If you are experiencing financial difficulty please ring the school office as we have a number of options that could support you to ensure that your child or children are in full school uniform.
