PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

What do you get when you put 18 students, a poster on Adjectives and a packet of Tim Tams in a room?Very excited students and teachers! This week we started our Middle School extension literacy group. This group is made up of students from Year 4 to Year 8. We have selected students for this group by looking at all of their literacy result in NAPLAN and school testing that we have done since Year 3 and aiming for students who have done well so far but we believe they could be pushed to excel. We aim to give them extra tips on how to improve their writing in an engaging way and to offer a chance to learn from expert teachers and each other. The students will also plot their achievements on a new Flight Control App which they will keep a digital portfolio of all of the learning tasks they have done, and will show how much they have improved over time.Mr Symonds and Mrs Rushton are delighted to offer this great opportunity as it shows our strength as a Central School. That is the ability for students to work together in groups of all ages.

SCHOOL NEWS

It is Term 3 already, Year 12 students have only a few short weeks to go until they are finished, we are taking enrolments for next years Kindy and commencing a new planning cycle. This will forever be the year with the Asterix (*) making note of data and statistics due to Coronavirus it is however important that we don’t just write off the rest of the year. For our students my message is that it is critical to make the most out of all learning experiences each and every day. School PlanningWe are about to move into a new planning cycle. This cycle is an opportunity for the school to look at our current position (based on data), set goals, focus our priorities and reflect and reset each year culminating in External Validation every four years. Every school in the state has a common Strategic Direction namely Student Growth and Attainment. Within this Strategic Direction schools have targets based on student growth in numeracy, literacy, HSC, and attendance. We have significant challenges and have set targets which will require investment in terms of teacher professional development, resources and targeted interventions to achieve these targets. We will then set two additional Strategic Directions based on the Situational Analysis (school data). These Strategic Directions are not trivial, they will impact on financial and human resource decisions made by the school over the next four years. The process of setting these Strategic Directions involves wide consultation from within the school and the community. With this in mind I look forward to inviting the community into our planning for the new School planning cycle. With COVID-19 restrictions this may need to be via an electronic form however there will be lots of opportunity for the community to engage and suggest priorities. Please watch future newsletters and the school Facebook for announcements. A critical element of my role is leading school improvement. I take this responsibility seriously as there is no question that excellence in leadership remains a crucial factor in determining whether students in our school succeed. It is second only to the in-school effects of excellence in teaching practices (Leithwood et al 2010). The enactment of this strong moral purpose combined with relational trust, a commitment to action, and collective efficacy establishes a mindset that places every child at the centre of decisions leading to improved outcomes for your students.High performing schools lead improvement with a strong focus on leading teaching and learning and the development of teachers. My role is to develop teacher capacity through engaging in evaluation of teaching and its effect on student learning in a highly collaborative, trusting environment.

Bowraville Education Campus (BEC)We have started to release some information about the new initiative planned for 2021 known as Bowraville Education Campus. In some ways this could be seen as a second school within the school. What we are looking to do is offer a point of difference and something that will support our students. We are currently having a number of staff retrained to deliver Certificate 2 and 3 courses in Hospitality, Primary Industries, Sports Coaching, Skills for Work, Business Services and Digital Media. This will mean that all students will have the opportunity to complete Year 12 with at least one nationally accredited certificate. There will also be an opportunity for adults to study on campus, either full time or part time. Watch this space, more information to come.

Best RegardsDave Taylor

Year 8 have been working throughout Term 2 on a unit called ‘Anamorph’. The students created a surrealist creature by combining two animals together. They prepared a drawing, made a 2D tile using sgraffito to engrave the image into the surface of a tile. They then created a 3D sculpture of their little beast. This is Sophia with her Batcat.

Maths problem of the week: are running out of space in the bottle. So they launch a search for new bottles. They look far and wide, and finally, offshore in the Arctic Ocean, they find three new empty bottles. Great sighs of relief come from all the bacteria. This is three times the number of bottles they’ve known. Surely, they think, their space problems are over. Is that so? No.

Since their space resources have quadrupled, how long can their growth continue? The bacteria’s growth can continue at its current rate until 12:02 p.m.

At 11:58, the first bottle is one-quarter full. By 11:59, the bacteria will have doubled to fill the first bottle halfway. By midnight, bottle 1 will be completely full. By 12:01, the bacteria in bottle 1 will have doubled and will fill up bottle 2. By 12:02, the bacteria in bottles 1 and 2 will each have doubled, to fill bottles 3 and 4.

11:54 p.m. Bottle 1 is 1.5% full.11:55 p.m. Bottle 1 is 3% full.11:56 p.m. Bottle 1 is 6.25% full.11:57 p.m. Bottle 1 is 12.5% full.11:58 p.m. Bottle 1 is 25% full.11:59 p.m. Bottle 1 is 50% full.Midnight Bottle 1 is 100% full.12:01 a.m. Bottles 1 and 2 are full.12:02 a.m. Bottles 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all full.

Bacteria BottlesDoubling Time is the time it takes a population to double at a constant rate of growth. Bacteria, for instance, multiply by division. One bacterium becomes two. Then two divide into four; the four divide into eight, and so on. For a certain strain of bacteria, the time for this division process is one minute.

If you put one of these bacterium in a bottle at 11:00 p.m., the entire bottle will be full by midnight.

When would the bottle be half full? How do you know?

Suppose you could be a bacterium in this bottle. At what time would you first realize that you were running out of space? Suppose that at 11:58 some bacteria realize that they are running out of space in the bottle. So they launch a search for new bottles. They look far and wide, and finally, offshore in the Arctic Ocean, they find three new empty bottles. Great sighs of relief come from all the bacteria. Suppose you could be a bacterium in this bottle. At what time would you first realize that you were running out of space? Answers will vary. At 11:55, when the bottle was only 3 percent full and 97 percent empty, would it be easy to see that there was a space problem?

Suppose that at 11:58 some bacteria realize that they

BCS STAFF IN FOCUS

Name: Debbie McFaddenWent to school at: Bletchington Public school and Orange High School, NSW.Experience/Background: Trained as a Primary School teacher and taught in many schools including Dubbo West Public School, Glenroi Heights Public School and Forbes High School. I then trained as a School Counsellor. I have now been a counsellor for many years including positions in the Central West of NSW, the Coffs Harbour area and in the Nambucca Valley for 4 ½ years.Position/role at Bowraville Central School: School CounsellorHobbies/Pastime: Travel, photography, reading and gardening. I love animals especially my dog, Louie and cat, Tigga.

BCS ALUMNI - OUR PAST STUDENTS

Name: Hi, My name is Kris Banks. I attended Bowraville Central between 1984 -1993.I lived with my parents in Conen Street Bowraville until 1994. Growing up there was the founding for my adult life, riding horses, hunting, camping down the by the river (that is something I still love & camp on the same place now) and lots of fishing.Memories of school: Let's be honest school was not high on my priority list at all. I wasn't a star student! I wasn't really a sociable teenager but 'Bowra' School and it's FANTASTIC teachers got me through in the Years 7-10. Some of those teachers were Doug Urquhart, Kerri Argent, Dianne Smith, Michelle Ottaway - just to name a few. Some of my favourite memories of school: Going to the school farm, pony club, cattle shows - meant I didn’t have to go to school! Socials at the Anglican Hall, swimming carnivals and fetes. The one thing I tried hard not to do was learn so I'm pretty sure I was a challenging student!!!My Grandfather lived in the museum unit in the main street and he would cook lunch for me most days which was usually hot chip sandwiches on Bowra Bakery bread. This also broke up my day. What I did after school: After Year 10 I went on to teach line dancing with Barry and Carmen Noble for a couple of years and this is where I met my first wife, Leona from Bellingen, (where I lived for a few

years). Leona and I had 3 children -Kyle (1997), Cody (1998) and Sian (2002). Leona also had a 2 year old Aiden 1993 who I adopted.Moving to Coffs I started my first sales job with Kirby vacuum cleaners, door to door where I discovered "selling" was a good fit for me. I liked travelling, I liked talking and I liked money so on I went from there. Next was selling cars at Geoff King Holden and Mike Blewitt Ford for a total of 10 years. During that time I got divorced and changed my path. I moved on to selling photocopiers where my current role is the Sales Manager of The Fuji Xerox Business Centre from Port Macquarie to Grafton. In the early days of this position I was able to visit Bowra Central as part of my work. During this time, I sold photocopiers to a Real Estate in Coffs where the owner set me up on a blind date with my now wife Nicarla. Together Nicarla and I have travelled around the world from trips I won being one of the top performing Sales Dealerships in Fuji Xerox Australia. We travelled to Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, Rome, New York, Fiji, Dubai and New Zealand. We have also had 2 girls Willow (2016) and Poppy (2018).Interests: For fun I travel all around NSW & QLD competing in Professional Bass & Bream Fishing Tournaments, I love camping and bike riding with the kids.At 43 years old LIFE HAS BEEN GREAT!!! I have 6 beautiful children, a beautiful wife and friends that could not be replaced.Other comments: All of this could have been very different if it wasn't for being pointed in the right direction by very persistent 'Bowra School" teachers.I absolutely loved growing up in Bowra and I WOULD NOT CHANGE A THING.FROM ME TO ALL OF YOU ‘THANK YOU’!!!

CLO CORNER School Merchandise available from the Front Office

At last count 116 students at Bowraville Central School were successful in receiving a laptop through the Variety Australia, the children’s charity. Having access to their own laptop will make a huge difference to the lives of these students and I’m sure all the recipients and their parents are grateful for such generosity from Variety Australia. Over the coming weeks I plan to give some feedback to the charity with some photos and stories of the students with their laptops, but I would encourage recipients to send their personal thanks to Variety Australia. Last year I held a successful ‘Healthy Mamas’ day for our mums/grandmas/aunties focussed on women’s health. I would like to do the same again this year in Women’s Health week (7th to 11th November) but with the COVID restrictions I will be limited to an online event. I haven’t as yet set the date but will advise as soon as I have done so. The event will include a talk by a medical professional and just a general check in/chat to ensure our mums are making time for their own health.
