Dear Church Family, This issue of the Sierra Story is only 16 pages long this month, rather than the normal 20 pages. It is very quiet here in the office this week, and submissions were definitely less than usual. Well, it’s another new year and a time of getting used to writing 2012 instead of 2011—that always takes a while for me to adjust to. This new year is also an opportunity to be the clay and let Him be the potter—and to be the work of His hands, as we live out Isaiah 64:8. Read page 12 for some great growth opportunities. I look forward to 2012 and to the person God brings to Sierra Pres. I very much appreciate all that Gordon Pipkin and the entire PSC have done over the past year. Please continue praying for the process (see page 14) and our new Senior Pastor and his family. Serving Him with Anticipation and Joy, Cecilia Shampay, Communications Director

New Beginnings This week I am on vacation, Jim and I are taking in movies and doing day trips. Last night we saw "War Horse "directed by Steven Spielberg. It begins in the English countryside with a farmer who purchases a horse at an auction. The horse named Joey is trained by his son, then sold to a World War I officer who uses him as his mount in the War. The horse changes hands and changes lives throughout the story. Trapped in no man's land the horse has a new beginning. Each New Year brings a chance for a new beginning for each of us. A chance to start fresh in relationships, in decisions, in our attitude and in our relationship with Jesus. We have new opportunities and faith adven-tures. Time to serve in a new way, time to say Yes to Jesus when he asks us to step up and be His heart, hands, feet and mind.

What New Beginning has God given you this New Year?

Blessings, Pastor Linda

CHANGE FOR LIFE SUNDAY

Coming the second Sunday in January is LivingWell Medical Clinic’s fundraiser ―Change for Life‖ baby bottles. Look for the basket of bottles in the church entry, take a bottle and over the month of January fill it with your pocket change and return it on Change for Life Sunday, the last Sunday in January.

By partnering with LivingWell, we, the Church, can help end the tragedy of abortion – one life at a time. LivingWell also provides STD (sexually transmitted disease) test-ing which gives another opportunity to educate clients about their life choices. We believe an informed choice is the best choice.

Questions?: called Julia deLisser, 432-8998 or Elizabeth White at LivingWell, 272-6800.

Dear Tom and Deni, I just wanted to thank you for the letter and care package you sent us. This is my first deployment, I'll be de-ployed here in Kabul, Afghanistan for the next year. Its been a rough few weeks, missing my family/friends/girlfriend. I landed in country on my 22nd birthday, and I don't leave the country until my 23rd birthday, I guess it'll just make for an awesome 23rd birthday present. This Christmas will also be my first Christmas without my Family, but I at least have the friends I have made while in training. I enjoyed reading your letter, I can honestly say it brightened my day knowing that people care. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas, and a happy new year. Sincerely, SrA Kenneth L. D. III, USAF, Mr. & Mrs. Dax - Thank you for such a kind letter and warm words! With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching it's nice to be thought of while being so far away from everyone. I have been married for 6 years and have one beautiful daughter named Jaylee, I call her my miracle child as she was born on 4 July bringing me back to the USA after being deployed last minute. Not knowing I was pregnant really put a damper on things and was proud to give birth on Independence Day. Thank you again for your kindness and thoughtfulness. Sincerely, Sarah H. Hello, my name is Beth A. I am stationed in Camp Pendleton, CA. I have been in for almost 9 years, I'm 27, and from Blanchard, MI originally. I'm single with no kids, although I want kids bad and a great man in my life

one day LOL. I am motor transport (on convoys constantly) supporting 3/7 out of 29 Palms, the infantry men. We should be back in Cali in April. Sorry this is late. Happy holidays and thank you so much. I am in Sangin, Afghanistan with my platoon of 69 (3 of us are females). Semper Fi, SSgt Beth A.

Sundays

9:00 AM Jim Line continues his insightful study. What do the Old Testament prophets have to say to us in the 21st Century? Come and be amazed at how the ancient speaks to us today.

10:30 AM Carl Ostrom continues the study of the church in the 21st Century by studying the church of the 1st century. As we learned in the class on "The Church in Post Modern Culture", we appear to be entering an age of apostolic ministry similar to the early church. We will review how the Holy Spirit directed the 1st Cen-tury church in worship and ministry in that culture. We can learn what principles of that time can apply to our present and future, and open ourselves to where the Holy Spirit wants to lead us now. The textbook is the New Testament.

Week 1 Jan 8 - Reviewing Jesus Ministry and Departing Instructions to His Disciples - How did Jesus pre-pare his Disciples for creating the early church?

Week 2 Jan 15 - Organization, Structure, Community, and Worship in the Early Church - How did the early church function internally?

Week 3 Jan 22 - Ministry and Evangelism in the Early Church - How did the church interact with the external community?

Week 4 Jan 29 - What Can We Apply to the Current Culture? - Using 2012 as a benchmark to re-evaluate our ministry as we have been called and instructed—not changing to fit the culture— but open to change to reach and touch God's created children living in this culture with the grace and love of their creator.

Other Opportunities

Eskaton Bible Study led by Dave and Linda Anderson twice a month in the lodge at Eskaton. Contact the Andersons for information.

February 26, 2012 seminar led by Tim Grebe on the 21st century church. While the seminar is directed to Elders, Deacons, and other church leaders, anyone interested is welcome to attend. The seminar will follow the annual meeting and begins with lunch. Contact Selma Wright to make lunch reservations or for more information. You will also need to read the book The Emerging Church by Dan Kimball prior to the seminar. Tim has spent years studying and reading about the church in the post-modern era. His seminar will cover some of the history of the church and how we might reach the 21st century soul.

Coming There will be another lunch time book discussion led by Pastor Linda Line during Lent. Watch for book title, date and time.

SMALL GROUP STUDY—NEW ADDITION

A review of Beth Moore’s study on Revelation: Now, either one likes Beth Moore’s style, or really dislikes it. There doesn’t seem to be any in-between. She is very intense and somewhat frenetic, but if that doesn’t bother you, this is a fairly good study. I have broken the 11-disc studies down to about half the time, as each disc is well over an hour long, and probably too much for a single study session for a small group. In the cartridge that holds the discs, I have left a piece of paper that tells you at what point during her study, you can break off and then pick it up the next time. These are 30-40 minute increments. There is a study guide with the series that really makes the study more relevant, so I would suggest that each per-son, or at least each couple, obtain one which can be done by calling 1-888-700-1999 or bethmoore.org. If I remember correctly, they are around $11 each. There is a sample one connected with the DVD set for you to see. I hope you enjoy this new addition to the Small Group Library, which is located in the Fellowship Hall. -Mary Reeve

A NOTE FROM A CARE RECEIVER—OF ONE OF OUR STEPHEN MINISTERS

"I just wanted to say Thank You so much for sending

me, at my most hardest time, a wonderful Stephen

Minister. She truly was an angel to me.

I want to share my feelings about why a Stephen

Minister, especially this one, meant so much and is

so dear to me. She was there for me, listened to me

more than a friend or family member would. Never

judged me, was always caring and concerned.

I will never forget what she has done for me. I feel

like a new, happy, full-of-life woman.

Stephen Ministry was truly a blessing to me, and I

hope it can be for someone else."

We have Stephen Ministers ready to be there for Y0U.

Would you like to have someone you can talk to,

who will just listen and not tell you what to do?

If so, please call Audrey McIntosh at the church office,

265-3291. Stephen Ministry is here for you!

The PSC has unanimously identified the man we believe God has called to become our Senior Pastor. Once the EPC Presbytery of the Pacific Ministerial Committee approves the recommended Candidate, our Session will call for a congregational meeting. On the Sunday of the meeting, the Candidate will preach in our church. Following that worship service, SPC members will be asked to vote to approve the recommendation of the PSC to issue the call to the Candidate. Once approved by SPC, we will WAIT for final approval from the Presbytery of the Pacific. The PSC anticipates having a new Senior Pastor sometime this spring. We appreciate your patience and prayers.

I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several time a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it? What if we gave it to Kids as gifts? What if we used it when we traveled? What if we used it in case of emergency? This is something to make you go ... hmm, where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think 'where are my priorities?’ And no dropped calls!
