Detroit Association of Planners

• In approximately 2012, two WSU Urban Planning graduate students saw a need for a stronger support system for minority planners

• Shari Hampton-Williams and Adrienne Zeigler recruited Pamela Alexander and Charlotte Blackwell, who recruited recent grad Cheryl Williams-Kearney

• The five women became the founders of the Detroit Association of Planners

• On October 24, 2014 DAP held it’s first meet and greet networking event

• On December 12, 2014 Charlotte and Cheryl hosted the very successful DAP Holiday event which was attended by members of city and county governments, academia, the Michigan Association of Planners and various stakeholders dedicated to the revitalization of Detroit

• In 2015, the goal is to receive our 501 (c )3 designation in order to implement more diversity revitalization programs at the neighborhood level

DAP MISSION STATEMENTTo create and enhance a local network for planning professionals

through advocacy, education, and collaboration

PURPOSE: to provide economic opportunities by offering training and workforce development which will facilitate the matching of skill sets with designated project requirements as the result of collaborating with any and all stakeholders.

VISION STATEMENT: “With Dignity, Excellence, Teamwork, Respect, Open Minds, Integrity, and Tenacity (D.E.T.R.O.I.T.) we strive to build professional development opportunities for planning professionals; strengthen opportunities for new planners; build awareness in minorities about the planning professional; and cultivate and enhance the brand of urban planners.”

Collaboration with

community members,

government, developers, businesses,,

youth, educators, etc.

We believe our goals can be accomplished through training and workforce development and the

engagement of the community as a whole

Deliverables:What does DAP bring to the table?

• First and foremost DAP is comprised of native Detroiters who possess a unique perspective of diversity inclusion needs. We are, therefore, best qualified to speak the language of diversity on behalf of the marginalized residents of Detroit.

• We have attained advanced education with specific knowledge of economic and community development requirements within the field of Urban Planning

• We are therefore privy to a unique perspective for the need of inclusionary policy creation and implementation

• We have created training modules for both youth and mature residents for inclusion in urban planning awareness and training & workforce development

• We have established ourselves within the field through networking with stakeholders

Make Detroit this exciting for everyone
