    —Psalm 96:2-3, NIV

Opening Song Set: “Thy Strong Word”

All: Thy strong Word did cleave the darkness; At Thy speaking it was done. For created light we thank Thee, While Thine ordered seasons run. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise to Thee who light dost send! Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia without end!

Men: Lo, on those who dwelt in darkness, Dark as night and deep as death, Broke the light of Thy salvation, Breathed Thine own life-breathing breath.

All: Give us lips to sing Thy glory, Tongues Thy mercy to proclaim, Throats that shout the hope that fills us, Mouths to speak Thy holy name. Alleluia, alleluia! May the light which Thou dost send Fill our songs with alleluias, Alleluias without end!

    Confession of Sins

Leader: God of Salvation, Congregation: In Christ You have done great things—our hearts are filled with joy. By your power You lifted us out of the wasteland of sin and brought us with joy and laughter into your kingdom. Salvation is your gift to us. But we confess that often we try to replace your gift with our own efforts. We try to complete what is already perfect; we try to add to what is already full; we try to earn what we already have. Forgive us for our foolishness. Help us to focus on your grace. Help us to live grateful lives in return. For Jesus’ sake alone. Amen.

    —based on Psalm 126

    Assurance of Forgiveness

Pastor: In Christ we have the forgiveness of sins and the riches of God’s grace. This grace was given to us: to preach to the nations the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. Congregation: Thanks be to God.

Sharing of the Pics (8:15am) Old Testament Isaiah 45:1-7 ESV

8:15am: David Reinke 11:00am: Phyllis Garner

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: 2“I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I name you, though

you do not know me. 5I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, 6that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. 7I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things.

    Holy Gospel Matthew 22:15-22 ESV

15Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. 16And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone's opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me the coin for the tax. ”And they brought him a denarius. 20And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21They said, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

Third Article of the Apostles’ Creed with Explanation

All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

    Leader: What does this mean?

All: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian Church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true.

    Sermon Song: “Knowing You”

All I once held dear, built my life upon All this world reveres and wars to own. All I once thought gain I have counted loss Spent and worthless now compared to this:

Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You, There is no greater thing You’re my all, You’re the best You’re my joy, my righteousness And I love You, Lord

Now my heart’s desire is to know You more To be found in You and known as Yours To possess by faith what I could not earn All surpassing gift of righteousness

Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You, There is no greater thing You’re my all, You’re the best You’re my joy, my righteousness And I love You, Lord

Oh, to know the power of Your risen life And to know You in Your sufferings To become like You in Your death my Lord So with You to live and never die.

Knowing You, Jesus, knowing You, There is no greater thing You’re my all, You’re the best You’re my joy, my righteousness And I love You, Lord. Love You, Lord.

Sermon: “You Don’t Know Me But…” Isaiah 45 The story of Cyrus proves to be a surprising twist in the plan of salvation. God can use anyone—even people who don’t know Him—to accomplish His will of being known as the one true God.

  • 8

Chosen Instrument Cyrus, powerful king of Persia (559-530 BC) “shepherd” (Is 44:28) “anointed” (Is 45:1) The prophet ______________ was a member of his court Ezra 1:1-4 Name Calling “I call you by your name, I name you, though you do not know me.” Did Cyrus become a follower of the God of Israel? That People May Know “I am YHWH and there is no other.” The all-knowing God wants all to know Him. How will God be known? What will God be known for?

    Life Group Questions

Head (what?) What is unique about Cyrus’ anointing? What would Cyrus end up doing for the people of Israel? What comfort is there in knowing God can / will use anyone?

Heart (so what?) How should knowing God can use anyone affect your interactions with others? When have you felt God grasp your hand to lead you through troubling times? What gifts have you seen in others who don’t believe in God?

Hands (now what?) What “open door” is God leading you through to impact the lives of others? How can discipling others help them to see their God-given gifts? How can you apply the story of Cyrus to your life?

Offering You may give your offering by giving online through the church website at www.friendshipcelebration.org, by signing up for automatic withdrawal which links to savings/checking account or debit/credit card (form is also available on church website), or by mailing your check to the church office.

Prayers Pastor: Bless your church throughout the world by your Holy Spirit, draw the scattered flock of Christ into a visible unity, and make your church a sign of hope to our divided world. Grant that we who bear your Son’s name may be instruments of your peace, bringing peace to our homes, our communities, our nation, and our world. Congregation: Amen.

    Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

    forever and ever. Amen.

    Words of Institution

Preparation for The Lord’s Table Holy Communion: We celebrate the Lord’s Supper today by receiving the Body and Blood of Christ which is given in, with and under the bread and wine. In this meal, we receive the forgiveness of sins, the promise of life everlasting and the strength we need to live faithfully. We invite to the Lord’s Table baptized believers who are truly repentant of sin and seek the grace in this meal, forgiving of one another as we have been forgiven, and gladly believe and confess the Real Presence of Christ in this meal. All people are welcome to come forward for a blessing. Participating in the meal is how the church proclaims the Lord’s death, resurrection and imminent return. Red wine is used to best visually convey the blood of Christ. For personal or medical reasons, white grape juice is also available in the center of the trays.

    Distribution Songs: “Remember and Proclaim”

This bread, His flesh, this wine, His blood; Emblems of the love of God. We fear no wrath or piercing sword; We are redeemed, released, restored in Jesus.

Alleluia, we take this bread; Alleluia, we drink this cup; Remembering to proclaim His death Until He comes again.

  • 10

Come ev’ry soul weighted down with care; Anxious thoughts, uneasy prayers. Come and believe and find your rest; Come and receive the righteousness of Jesus.

Alleluia, we take this bread; Alleluia, we drink this cup; Remembering to proclaim His death Until He comes.

O Alleluia, we take this bread; Alleluia, we drink this cup; Remembering to proclaim His death Until He comes again. Until He comes again. Until He comes again.

“My Faith Looks Up to Thee”

My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine! Now hear me while I pray, Take all my guilt away, O let me from this day, be wholly Thine.

May Thy rich grace impart, Strength to my fainting heart, My zeal inspire; As Thou hast died for me, O may my love to Thee Pure, warm, and changeless be, a living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread And griefs around me spread, Be Thou my guide; Bid darkness turn to day, Wipe sorrow’s tears away, Nor let me ever stray, from Thee aside.

When ends life’s passing dream, When death’s cold threatening stream, shall o’er me roll. Blest Savior then, in love, Fear and distrust remove; O bear me safe above, a ransomed soul!
