Assessing and Addressing Community Needs in a Rural Area In Partnership with the New England Public Health Training Center Purpose This work revolved around strengthening community health in Rindge, New Hampshire. Research focused on identifying barriers to healthy behavior and introducing intervention methods to overcome these barriers. Assessment and Observation Observation was key in the determination of ideal ways to positively impact the community. The best way to observe the community was to get involved. Half of the project’s time was spent at the pantry connecting with new people. One goal focused on understand and identifying the difference between the root cause of a problem and a root cause of a symptom. Barriers to Health Transportation tremendously impacts access to food. Exposure to all the people involved with the Rindge pantry highlighted this issue. The pantry’s lack of resources to provide healthy food and extend operation hours. Limitations of the volunteers to access and provide federal food. Incomplete education surrounding proper food handling. Addressing Community Health: Intervention Highlights . - Organized a food drive to connect the Franklin Pierce community with the local community during the holiday season. - Created and put up flyers around campus. - Placed food donation boxes at various locations - Transported, recorded, and shelved donated items. - Assembled an informational guide to cooking and storing holiday turkeys and hams. - Created a fact sheet for the Got Lunch program in a format that is easily understandable. - Created recipes using items typically found at the food pantry. - Created a brochure with frequently asked questions from the USDA targeted to questions pantry users were asking. - Distributed other educational resources such as: -Cold food Storage -How to properly cook meat -What food labeling means -Shelf life of canned foods ` Project Takeaways: There is a stigma associated with food insecurity. Overcoming it will help communities to grow with available resources. Helping a community overcome their barriers requires determining root problems, utilizing available resources, and taking small steps toward developing a plan to address bigger issues. The importance of relationships in pantries helps to alleviate the stigma associated with food insecurity.
