Lathe Operations
Turning: produce straight, conical, curved, or grooved workpieces
Facing: to produce a flat surface at the end of the part or for making face grooves. Boring: to enlarge a hole or cylindrical cavity made by a previous process or to produce circular internal grooves. Drilling: to produce a hole by fixing a drill in the tailstock Threading: to produce external or internal threads Knurling: to produce a regularly shaped roughness on cylindrical surfaces
Lathe is a machine, which removes the metal from a piece of work to the required shape & size.
Lathe is forerunner of all machine tools.
Very versatile machine.
Used for turning, tapering, form turning, screw cutting, facing, drilling, boring, spinning, grinding and polishing operations
Safety Precautions
Be aware of safety requirements in any area of shopAlways attempt to observe safety rulesFailure results in:
• Serious injury• Resultant loss of time and pay• Loss of production to company
Always remove chips with brush• Chips can cause cuts if use hands• Chips become embedded if use cloths
Always remove sharp toolbit from toolholder when polishing, filing, cleaning, or making adjustmentsKeep floor around machine free from grease, oil, metal cuttings, tools and workpiecesNever attempt to stop a lathe chuck or driveplate by handBe sure chuck or faceplate mounted securely before startingDo not operate lathe until understand controlsNever operate machine if safety guards removed
