Born and raised in rural Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, I developed an appreciation for the natural environment that would later grow into a passion for sustainability and environmentally responsible design. As a child, I was either playing in the local stream, or building cities out of legos and toy blocks. Later in life my creative imagination would lead me toward architecture, driven by a desire to create a built landscape that respects nature and empowers humanity.

My circuitous path to architecture began in 1997 when I started class at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. While at Thaddeus Stevens, I gained a wealth of technical knowledge that became a solid base for my career. After Stevens, I went on to study at the Community College of Philadelphia and later at Drexel University. The birth of my son in 2001 would cause me to leave school early, but I continued to further my career in the profession regardless.

During the past 10+ years, I devoted myself to learning all that the profession had to teach me. I have developed a unique set of skills (graphic and web design, marketing, and business development) that compliment my knowledge of professional practice. As a result, I have a much broader understanding of the practice and have the ability to complete project work while writing proposals and pro actively marketing for future work.

Paralleling my growth in the profession has been my interest in sustainable design and community involvement. I am a devout advocate for sustainability and have spent the last ten years volunteering with community groups and with the Green Building Council to provide education and inspire others to design/build healthy, beautiful, and most importantly, sustainable buildings.

It is now 2013. I am back in school at Drexel and as I work toward completing my education and eventual registration, I am as enthusiastic as the year I started about the profession and my contributions to it. As you read through my resume and portfolio, please know that this is only a representation of what I have achieved thus far. I believe that the best has yet to come.

Most sincerely,

I am writing this letter in full support of Neil Young. Over the past ten years, I have interacted with Neil on multiple levels and feel that I have ample knowledge to speak about Neil as a student, person, and architectural intern.

My first interaction with Neil was in a Portfolio Design Studio near the end of his second year at Philadelphia Community College. Neil demonstrated a passion for design and graphics, always asking thoughtful questions and using details from a micro level to appreciate design at the macro level. He was consistently meticulous about his research and methodology, regardless of whether it concerned highly refined construction details or more abstract qualities of how light and shadow affected perceptions of space. In similar fashion, other complex design concepts that usually require significant time and effort to appreciate were quickly understood and embraced by Neil, and subsequently implemented into his work.

My continued interaction with Neil was as a colleague. Neil thrives on hard work, bringing to it a level of enthusiasm and professional demeanor that is both refreshing and contagious. At our every encounter, he always brought an avalanche of work with him, the level of which was consistently high. Selflessly, he continuously encouraged others around him to question and to enjoy the work and opportunities available to them through a career in architecture. Neil embraced the education process with full rapture. He consistently engaged in multiple opportunities and succeeded in getting the most out of his education.

As a practicing architect as well as an adjunct professor, I always hope to work with someone with the abilities and energy that Neil possesses and exudes. He is an excellent example of a young Architect in pursuit of a promising career and I am certain that he will continue growing in the years to come. I am excited to participate in his career and eagerly provide my support towards his current endeavor.

If you have any questions regarding Neil or if I can be of any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me

Thank You,

Jeff Fama, RAAdjunct ProfessorDrexel University

It is not often that I am this enthusiastic about writing a reference letter for a young talented individual. Neil not only performed well as he worked on projects at Sims Architects, he also assisted in developing a second company Schooldesigner, LLC. Neil was instrumental in talking to firms and assisting them in submitting projects for the website www.schooldesigner.com. While working for both companies, Neil was always willing to do what it took to complete the job. He was attentive to detail and was focused on quality design.

Neil’s passion has always been a focus on sustainable design. He was diligent about promoting recycling in the office long before it was the “in green thing” to do. One day I recall that he brought in dishes to the office that he was not using anymore. I am not sure if the motivation was to make good use of the resources he did not need anymore or just to be kind. Either way, that’s the way Neil is – always willing to help others and preserve the environment.

Neil always demonstrated a willingness to take on new tasks and learn what needed to be learned. I strongly believe he will be an asset to your firm. I understand Neil’s desire to be in the Philadelphia area and certainly hope he will continue his education to complete a degree in architecture. Our profession needs more individuals like Neil.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Thank You,

Joel K. Sims, AIAPresidentSims Architects

Having worked very closely with Neil for almost two years, this is a bittersweet letter of reference. On the one hand, I am encouraged to see Neil following his passion for architecture by making a move back into the professional side of the practice. On the other hand, Neil has been an integral member of our staff through his unparalleled work ethic and cheerful willingness to lend a hand where-ever and whenever it may be needed (often without even being asked). As our Communications Manager, a position that Neil took in order to gain more experience with a sustainable design firm, we could not have asked for a more sincere advocate and promoter of our work. It is unthinkable that we will find a replacement who cares as much about the success of Re:Vision as Neil does—and, based on the reference checks I did when hiring Neil, I think that is probably true of every place he has worked. Neil is simply the kind of person who puts his full creative energy into whatever endeavor is at hand.

Since Neil was our firm’s first Communications Manager, he did not have an infrastructure to work within and was instrumental in creating systems for how we track and promote our work. Another success that is completely attributable to Neil is the vast (!!!) improvement in the graphic appeal of our proposals. At our weekly communications meetings, Neil was diligent about reporting on work completed as well as identifying new opportunities for finding work and telling our story.

Being a somewhat subjective field, communications is full of personal opinion and Neil took all of my direction and detailed requests seriously and with absolute grace.

If our firm had an available position for a project architect, I would be very happy to have Neil stay at Re:Vision but, in the absence of that, I can at least support him in finding the best possible fit for his continued growth and contribution to the field of architecture and sustainable design.

If you have any questions, please feel welcome to contact me.

Sincerely,

Jenn Rezeli, LEED APManaging PrincipalRe:Vision Architecture

Description: In March of 2011, Scott Kelly approached me with news of an RFP for a project seeking Living Building Challenge (LBC) certification. Re:Vision was not initially invited to submit a proposal, but after a brief marketing campaign designed to inform the Lancaster County Conservancy (LCC) of Re:Vision’s experience with LBC projects, we were invited to submit our qualifications.

Re:Vision was selected among three firms to present to the LCC Board of Directors. I worked closely with Scott Kelly and other consulting team members to prepare the interview presentation and informational package that was left with LCC members.

Re:Vision was selected out of a group of nationally recognized firms to continue with the project.

In the fall of 2011, Re:Vision began to prepare for the intensive 5-day green design charrette. The charrette was attended by over 70 project stakeholders including the design team, LCC board members, local code officials, neighbors and citizen groups.

During the charrette I assisted the design teams in consolidating design schemes and presenting their designs to community members during the “feedback loops”. The process yielded a design scheme that was vetted by the project team and community members and went on to be used as a guide for the design team in their development of the final building design.

The project is currently in fundraising stage and is expected to continue into design development in 2013.

Lancaster Central Market

Page 19: Neil Ryan Young Resume and Portfolio

Description: As marketing manager, I was responsible for creating the winning proposal for the publicly advertised RFP. With a staff of six, the project represented a significant amount of work for the firm.

After receiving the approval to proceed, my role in the project included surveying and documenting the existing building. This process included researching and locating historic artifacts that were stored in several off-site locations within several municipal agencies.

Once the existing conditions were documented, I assisted with the schematic design and cost estimating for several schemes. The project was being overseen by three organizations; the City of Lancaster, The Central Market Trust and Friends of Central Market. Designs were presented to all three groups for comment and approval.

The final approved design included the addition of an observation mezzanine, excavated basement storage, elevator/stair tower, public rest rooms and renovations to over 66 market stands.

I was heavily involved in the project throughout the design and documentation phase which included an intensive phasing plan to allow for the Market to be open continuously throughout the construction phase. My key responsibilities during the DD phase included code reviews for accessibility and egress, design documents, 3D renderings, elevator/stair design, restroom design and stand alteration guidelines.

During construction, I was tasked with weekly contractor meetings, site walk through and punch list reports.

Pennsylvania Counseling Services

Page 21: Neil Ryan Young Resume and Portfolio

Description: This project represents the first that I was involved in from inception to completion. I completed the initial survey that included selective demolition and investigation of the existing facade hidden behind a 1960’s era metal facade alteration and continued on the project to develop the design and documentation and assist the project manager with construction administration.

The two unique facades were combined at the street level to create unity for the counseling service while the historic facade above (left) was given more attention by the design team.

Interior spaces include a training center that contains several large classrooms with operable partitions, an administrative suite, private counseling offices, lobby, open office space and transitional housing.

Security was a large concern therefore separate access and corridors were provided to allow for counselors to move freely through the building without bumping into patients. A stair/elevator tower was located in a central area to provide accessibility between both buildings at all floors and created a central access point for the updated mechanical systems.

Page 23: Neil Ryan Young Resume and Portfolio

Description: As an intern, this project was the first to test my design abilities. The project was completed pro-bono by Tippetts Weaver Architects, so little resources were dedicated to the project by other staff members.

The client wanted to renovate the facade of an existing concrete warehouse building to provide a new image that would capture the spirit of the design school and be a beacon of the schools technical approach.

My design was meant to emphasize the building structure and provides depth and texture above the existing concrete/EIFS skin. The facade was punctuated with sun screens and an entry canopy to give more dimension and strong shadow lines during the day-time hours. At night, the building is bathed in color via spotlights and LED lighting. The vertical screen was used to create an accent and conceal an existing stair tower clad in bronze coated glass.

For me this design represents my abilities as a designer and has always been a personal benchmark that I hope to achieve in the future.

The project received the Keystone Excellence in Construction Award in 2005

In 2006 I was asked to help develop a new website with Joel Sims. The website, Schooldesigner.com, was envisioned as a tool to advocate for quality school design and promote Joel as a specialist in the k-12 school market.

My role in working with Joel was to not only design the site, but also to create a business strategy that would attract designers and manufacturers to join the site as paying members. Through this process, I found that I had a special interest in business development and client relations. After Schooldesigner.com was up and running, I helped to maintain paying members and went on to help Joel with the marketing of Sims Architects.

Since that initial marketing project in 2006, I have gone on to learn much more about marketing and business development within the architectural profession and have developed a wide variety of skills in this realm. I am well versed in the tasks of putting together successful proposals, preparing informative and inspiring interview presentations, writing articles and press releases, preparing award submissions, designing advertisements and brochures, and searching for new business opportunities (RFQ/RFP’s).

I take a proactive approach to business development and use my knowledge of web design/code to help search for information that the casual observer might miss. Through the use of email marketing and social media sites, I have helped to attract the attention of would be clients. I enjoy searching for new opportunities and advocating for my team.

LITTLE ORPHAN ALLEY

2222222

Average annual rainfall in Philadelphia is 42” per year. Within each rain event, the first inch (1”) of rain generates .62 gallons of water per square foot. On a modest Philadelphia row home with a 500 sf roof surface, this translates to over 300 gallons of water generated in 1” of rain. For this reason, Philadelphia Water Department’s Green City Clean Waters program for reducing combined sewer overflows has the goal of managing the first 1” of stormwater runoff from roughly one-third of the impervious surfaces through green stormwater practices. In support of this program, the Philadelphia Horticultural Society convened a group of 37 interdisciplinary professionals, including designers, engineers, and builders, to develop a range of innovative concepts for managing residential stormwater in ways that are affordable and effective, beautiful and buildable. A representative sample of these strategies are illustrated here.

Throughout my education and professional career I have been fascinated by the power of imagery and have espoused a special interest in understanding the core concepts of graphic design.

I have poured over countless books, magazines and design blogs to gain knowledge of the technical practices and applications used to create visually appealing, user friendly graphics.

A special interest of mine has been the use of grids in graphic design. Learning this systematic approach to creating graphic layouts has opened a new world of possibilities for me and has increased my proficiency when designing everything from design boards, to proposals.

My technical proficiency in graphic design includes the use of a wide variety of software programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and others) and an eye for what does and doesn’t look good.

In addition to my graphic design capabilities, I have developed expertise in web design including direct code entry (HTML, CSS, PHP, Etc.), Dreamweaver and WordPress. My knowledge of how websites function allows me to edit small components without the need of web developers. It also means that I can diagnose and correct problems that web users may experience.

Over the past several years I have used this knowledge to create and manage several add-ons to Re:Vision Architecture’s website including the creation of a Google maps application that contains information on Re:Vision’s projects nationally, a WordPress blog and a variety of social media sites.
