Age 6 yrs — SeaWorld of California Name: Canuck II (male) Species: Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) Source: wild capture, 10-12-1977, Ingolfshofdi coast, Iceland, age: est. 2 yrs Deceased: 6:30 a.m., 08-02-1981, SeaWorld of California, age: est. 6 yrs Reported cause of death (per NMFS MMIR data): Chronic Kidney Disease Necropsy info: Diagnosis- John G. Simpson, DVM (1981): Granulomatous Nephritis Diagnosis- AFIP- Sidney R. Jones, DVM (1981): 1. Candidiasis, systemic, severe, heart, lymph nodes, kidneys, male, killer whale (Orcinus orca), Cetacea, due to Candida sp. 2. Granuloma, parasitic , severe, lymph node, due to a trematode, genus and specie undetermined. 3. Plasma cell aggregates, diffuse, moderate, liver. Diagnosis- Lanny H. Cornell, DVM , Brian J. Golden, DVM (1981): 1. Pyelonephritis 2. Sclerotic nephrodecompensation. Notes: Prior to reforms of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) in 1994, holders of marine mammals for public display were required to submit necropsy reports (animal autopsy reports) for deceased animals, making the documents available to the public and scientific community. Presently, marine mammal parks in the U.S. are only required to provide a “cause of death” to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) which maintains Marine Mammal Inventory Reports (MMIR). Details of marine mammal deaths are now a closely guarded secret at U.S. entertainment facilities. The Orca Project acquired the following documents from the National Marine Fisheries Service (U.S.A) via the Freedom of Information Act for deaths that occurred prior to implementation of the 1994 MMPA changes. Other than congestion, lung t i s s u e appears normal.

Mu l t i - f o ca l areas o f plasma c e l l i n f i l t r a t e s a re seen throughout t h e o therwise normal, bu t congested parenchyma.

I r r e g u l a r sized, mu1 t i p l e granulomata and associated t ubu la r nec ros i s a re seen here throughout t he co r tex and medulla. I n t he center o f some granulomas, sheets o f smal l coccoid bodies a re noted. These may be funlgi and f u r t h e r t e s t s w i l l be done. I f a s p e c i f i c i d e n t i f i c a t i o n can be made, a suppl imentary r e p o r t w i l l be sent t o you.

Although several sec t ions were examined, no evidence o f t he wh i te f o c i noted gross ly , cou ld be seen microscopica l l y . The muscle appeared normal.

Granuloma, p a r a s i t i c , severe, lymph node, due t o a trematode, genus and spec ie undetermined. 3. Plasma c e l l aggregates, d i f f u s e , moderate, l i v e r .

Cqmments: Th i s i s an e x c e l l e n t example o f systemic c a n d i d i a s i s . The ca rd iac l e s i o n s were s i m i l a r t o a p rev ious case i n a k i l l e r whale (AFIP 1695430). There was d i f f u s e involvement bo th r e n a l c o r t e x and medul la . Th i s i s our f i r s t exper ience t o examine n e p h r i t i c l e s i o n s o f c a n d i d i a s i s i n whales. The severe ana systemic l e s i o n s o f c a n d i d i a s i s suggests t h a t t h e animal was

oimmunosuppressed. The granuloma i n t h e lymph node con ta ined fragments o f an a d u l t t rematode and numerous y e l l o w eggs.
