Please be seated for the readings / Ngā Karaipiture / E noho.Reader A reading from the book of Isaiah 49:1-7But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the formertime he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land ofNaphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea,the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people whowalked in darkness have seen a great light;those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. aswith joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For theyoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of theiroppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

I

Reader A reading from the book of 1 Corinthians 1:1-9Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our LordJesus Christ, that all of you should be in agreement and that thereshould be no divisions among you, but that you should be united in thesame mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me byChloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers andsisters. What I mean is that each of you says, ‘I belong to Paul’, or ‘Ibelong to Apollos’, or ‘I belong to Cephas’, or ‘I belong to Christ.’ HasChrist been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptizedin the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you exceptCrispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized inmy name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that,I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not sendme to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom,so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For themessage about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, butto us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All Thanks be to God.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All Thanks be to God.

At 10am we sing this hymn in preparation for the Gospel. Please standand turn to face the Gospel and the Cross / Ka tū te katoa1. Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways!Re-clothe us in our rightful mind,in purer lives thy service find,in deeper reverence praise,in deeper reverence praise.2. In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea,the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word, rise up and follow thee, rise up and follow thee.3. O Sabbath rest by Galilee!O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with theethe silence of eternity, interpreted by love!Interpreted by love!

4. Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease;take from our souls the strain and and let our ordered lives confessthe beauty of thy peace, the beauty of thy peace.5. Breathe through the heats of outhy coolness and thy balm;let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;speak through the earthquake, winO still small voice of calm!O still small voice of calm!

Reader Hear the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according toJohn 1:29-42 All Praise and glory to God.Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew toGalilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, inthe territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken throughthe prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on theroad by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people whosat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the regionand shadow of death light has dawned.’From that time Jesus began toproclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’ As he walkedby the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, andAndrew his brother, casting a net into the lake—for they werefishermen. And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish forpeople.’ Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went fromthere, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brotherJohn, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he calledthem. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followedhim. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues andproclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease andevery sickness among the people.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judgethe living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Sonis worshipped and glorified, and has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
