First Sunday in Lent

Opening Words.

God in Christ has revealed his glory

Come let us worship

From the rising of the sun to its setting

The Lords name is greatly to be praised.

Give him praise, you servants of the Lord

O praise the name of the Lord.

Opening Song: : Blessed Assurance

Blessed assurance Jesus is mine

O what a foretaste of glory divine

Heir of salvation purchase of God

Born of His Spirit washed in His blood

This is my story this is my song

Praising my Savior all the day long

This is my story this is my song

Praising my Savior all the day long

Perfect submission perfect delight

Visions of rapture now burst on my sight

Angels descending bring from above

Echoes of mercy whispers of love

Perfect submission all is at rest

I in my Savior am happy and blest

Watching and waiting looking above

Filled with His goodness lost in His love

We pray

All Faithful God

Whose word is life:

Come with saving power

To free our praise,

Inspire our prayer

And shape our lives

For the kingdom of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The Summary of the Law

The response to the Summary is: Amen. Lord, have mercy.

Prayer after Communion:

[a moment of silence]

All Father of all,

we give you thanks and praise,

that when we were still far off

you met us in your Son and brought us home.

Dying and living, he declared your love,

gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory.

May we who share Christs body live his risen life;

we who drink his cup bring life to others;

we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.

Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us,

so we and all your children shall be free,

and the whole earth live to praise your name;

through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Notices After the notices we stand to sing the final song

Final Song: Holy Is The Lord

We stand and lift up our hands

For the joy of the Lord is our strength

We bow down and worship Him now

How great how awesome is He

And together we sing

Ev'ryone sing

Holy is the Lord God Almighty

The earth is filled with His glory

Holy is the Lord God Almighty

The earth is filled with His glory

The earth is filled with His glory

It is rising up all around

It's the anthem of the Lord's renown

It's rising up all around

It's the anthem of the Lord's renown

The priest pronounces the Final Blessing

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord

All: in the Name of Christ. Amen.

All the saints adore Thee

Casting down their golden crowns

Around the glassy sea

Cherubim and seraphim

Falling down before Thee

Though the eye of sinful man

Thy glory may not see

Only Thou art holy

There is none beside Thee

Perfect in power

In love and purity

4. Holy holy holy

Lord God Almighty

All Thy works shall praise Thy name

In earth and sky and sea

Holy holy holy

Merciful and mighty

God in three persons

Blessed Trinity

The Collect: Almighty God,

whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness,

and was tempted as we are, yet without sin:

give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit;

and, as you know our weakness,

so may we know your power to save;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for everAmen.

Songs

How Great is Our God

The splendor of the King

Clothed in majesty

Let all the earth rejoice

He wraps Himself in light

And darkness tries to hide

And trembles at His voice

And trembles at His voice

great is our God

Sing with me

How great is our God

And all will see how great

How great is our God

And age to age He stands

And time is in His hands

Beginning and the End

Beginning and the End

The Godhead three in one

Father Spirit Son

The Lion and the Lamb

The Lion and the Lamb

Name above all names

Worthy of all praise

My heart will sing

How great is our God

I

Indescribable

From the highest of heights to the depths of the sea

Creation's revealing Your majesty

From the colors of Fall to the fragrance of Spring

Ev'ry creature unique in the song that it sings

All exclaiming

Indescribable uncontainable

You placed the stars in the sky

And You know them by name

You are amazing God

All powerful untamable

Awestruck we fall to our knees

As we humbly proclaim

You are amazing God

Who has told ev'ry lightning bolt where it should go

Or seen heavenly storehouses laden with snow

Who imagined the sun and gives source to its light

Yet conceals it to bring us the coolness of night

None can fathom

You are amazing God

Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 3:1-6

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? 2And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. 4But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

The Gospel:Matthew 4:1-11

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew.

All: Glory to you O Lord.

Jesus has been baptised. Then the following takes place

4Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. 4But he answered, It is written,

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

5Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

He will command his angels concerning you,

and

On their hands they will bear you up,lest you strike your foot against a stone.

7Jesus said to him, Again it is written, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test. 8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me. 10Then Jesus said to him, Be gone, Satan! For it is written,

You shall worship the Lord your Godand him only shall you serve.

11Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord

All: Praise to you, O Christ.

Agnus Dei

AllLamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,

grant us peace.

AllWe do not presume to come to this your table, O merciful Father,

trusting in our own righteousness,

but in your manifold and great mercies.

We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs

under your table.

But you are the same Lord, whose nature is always to have mercy.

Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,

so to eat the flesh your dear Son Jesus Christ,

and to drink his blood,

that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body

and our souls washed through with his precious blood,

and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us.

Amen.

The Communion

Baptized persons who are communicant members of other Churches which subscribe to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity and are in good standing in their own Church are welcome to Communion. Come forward with faith, hope, and charity, discerning the Lords body.

Those who do not wish to receive communion are welcome to come forward for a blessing you may indicate by crossing your arms over your chest at the altar rail.

(we kneel)

All glory be to you, our heavenly Father,

who, in your tender mercy,

gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ

to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption;

who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered

a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction

for the sins of the whole world;

he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue,

a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again.

Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray,

and grant that, by the power of your Holy Spirit,

we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine,

according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christs holy institution,

in remembrance of his death and passion,

may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood;

who, in the same night that he was betrayed,

took bread and gave you thanks;

he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;

do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks;

he gave it to them, saying:

Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,

which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

All Amen.

[a moment of silence]

Let us pray.

All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.

Amen.

The Talk

The Creed

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

- 5 -

The Intercessions (we kneel or sit)

The intercessor prays: Lord, in your mercy

We respond: Hear our prayer

And at the end: Merciful Father

We all say: accept these prayers

for the sake of your Son

our Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Confession and Absolution

PriestThe sacrifice of God is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart God will not despise.

Let us come to the Lord, who is full of compassion, and acknowledge our transgressions in penitence and faith. cf Psalm 51.17

We pray the following after a moment of silence:

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour

in thought and word and deed,

through negligence, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault.

We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us,

forgive us all that is past

and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

to the glory of your name. Amen.

The priest proclaims the Absolution which is the assurance of Gods forgiveness

The Peace (we stand):

Since we are justified by faith,

we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has given us access to his grace. Romans 5.1,2

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

We respond: and also with you.

We offer one another a sign of peace.

Eucharistic Prayer

The Lord be with you.

All And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, it is our duty and our joy,

at all times and in all places to give you thanks and praise,

holy Father, heavenly King, almighty and eternal God,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

And now we give you thanks because you give us the spirit of discipline, that we may triumph over evil and grow in grace, as we prepare the celebrate the paschal mystery with mind and heart renewed..

Therefore with angels and archangels,

and with all the company of heaven,

we proclaim your great and glorious name,

for ever praising you and saying:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
