As the weather warms up in the spring,we all tend to emerge with a big listo outdoor to do items. Maybe its

going on hikes, digging up new beds or agarden, or dusting o your bicycle and takingit or a spin aer a long winter.

O course, aer a burst o activity, ourmuscles and joints let us know when weveoverdone it. It seems like the minute youresaying goodbye to colder weather, youresaying hello to muscle pain and sore, sti

joints. But beore you reach or aspirin oribuproen, you should know about powerul, eective and ast-acting ingredients that dont

harm your stomach lining, heart or liver likepain relievers. Plus, they actually help your

joints heal rom damage whether romyour most recent exercise or over time.

Te rst ingredient is curcumin. Tisamazing compound rom turmeric (Curcumalonga), protects you rom ree radical damage, dramatically reduces inammation and pain, and is a true desert-island ingredient i youhad to narrow it down to just one.

However, it is truly important that you ndthe right curcumin, because standard extractscan be difcult or the body to absorb. Tebest curcumin extract is micronized thatis, reduced to a very small size and blendedwith turmeric oils. Tis improves the absorp-tion and blood-retention time dramatically up to 10 times that o standard extracts.1,2Tis curcumin inhibits COX-2 enzyme activ-ity and stops cellular damage rom ree radi-cals two things that cause muscle pain and

    joint damage rom exercise.

Te next ingredient you need or an activelie is boswellia (Boswellia serrata). Hereagain, its important to get the best extract.Youll want a boswellia that screens out mucho a compound called beta-boswellic acid, because otherwise, the boswellia can actu-ally increase inammation. So what youre

looking or is a boswellia that sharply reducesinammation but retains naturally higherlevels o another compound, acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA), to really boostthe eectiveness o the extract.3-5

Boswellia is a perect partner to curcumin. It blocks inammation along the 5-LOXpathway and also stops damage to your kneesand other joints.

In act, a unique combination o bioavail-able curcumin and boswellia was judged tobe superior to the prescription arthritis drug, celecoxib (the generic o the brand name Cele-brex), in a clinical study o osteoarthritis.5

Te curcumin and boswellia combina-tion was better than celecoxib in relievingpain, walking distance and joint line tender-ness scores. Not surprisingly, efcacy andtolerability o the herbal combination usedin the current study was shown to be supe-rior to those o celecoxib or treating activeosteoarthritis. When it came to relieving

pain, 64 percent o those taking the hingredients versus 29 percent in the group improved to such a high degreethey were able to move rom having moate to severe arthritis to mild to modarthritis.5 Tese ingredients are more powerul pain-relievers they actually

heal the damage done over time to jointeven i you havent been active or some high-absorption curcumin and high-Aboswellia can turn that around.

Do j dc pa , oo!Along with high-absorption curcuminhigh-AKBA boswellia, you need an amacid combination called d,l-phenylalaalso known as DLPA.

Te d orm o phenylalanine inhibitbreakdown o enkephalins related togood endorphins which are assocwith keeping positive mood. It also relmuscle pain in its own right. Qs: I keep hearing good things about thePaleo diet. Is this really a sound nutritional plan?Asr: Teres no doubt that the Paleo diet is gettinga lot o traction in the media these days. Fans o this dietclaim that we should eat more o what our Stone Age hunter-gatherer ancestors ate, and that we should avoid grains, dairy and legumes because we simply havent evolvedto consume them. Tey also argue that the typicalWestern diet is largely responsible or many o the illso today, including obesity, heart disease and diabe-

Tis is certainly hard to dispute!Te Paleo plan is made up o meat, sh, shellsh, eggs, tree nuts, roots, ruits, vegetables and berries.Sounds pretty healthy on the surace, but the restric-tions mentioned earlier seem a bit impractical. Tere isan overwhelming body o research touting the healthulaspects o whole grains, low-at dairy and legumes. ManyPaleo diet ans are quick to point out that its the healthi-est diet out there; however, I would argue that we simplydont know how it stacks up against a traditional Asiandiet, a Mediterranean diet or any o the various vegetarianplans. And lets not orget the act that ollowing a true Paleodiet is almost impossible in our current environment. Wildgame is not widely available and most plant oods are notgrown in the wild either. Even those o us wanting to avoidas many processed oods as possible can nd it to be quitea challenge. In the end, the goal o consuming more o yourood directly rom nature is great, and it certainly beats thetraditional Western diet. However, some o the claims aboutPaleo are a bit ar-etched with little science to back them up,and you may nd it to be needlessly restrictive. Give it a shotthough, and see what you think!

hypothyroidism, or underac-tive thyroid, is a conditionthat aects about ve percent

o people over the age o 12 years, according to Journal o Clinical Endo-crinology Metabolism. Tere are manysymptoms o low thyroid, but the mostcommon are:

    Brittle nails.Cold hands and eet.Cold intolerance.Dry skin.Elevated cholesterol.Fatigue.Hair loss. Inability to concentrate.Puy eyes.Low body temperature.Weight gain.

(Tis list is not an attempt to allow or diag-nosis o hypothyroidism; only your doctorcan diagnose this condition.)

I you are already being treated or lowthyroid, do you recognize any o thesesymptoms? I so, consider the possibilitythat your treatment isnt optimal.

Physicians usually measure SH to deter-mine i your thyroid levels are correct. ounderstand why this might not be the besttool to measure eectiveness o your thyroidtreatment, you need to understand how thethyroid gland works. Your body producesSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), whichraises your thyroid hormone called levothy-roxine, also known as 4. As your 4 levelgoes up, the body senses this and thus lowersthe level o SH. Tis becomes a balancingact where, i SH is high, 4 is low and iSH is low, 4 is high. Your active thyroid

hormone, though, is liothyronine or 3. 4travels to the liver and it is changed to 3.

Since doctors commonly use only SHto measure eectiveness o thyroid treat-ment, they oen miss a common problem. Many people will have adequate 4, butthey dont efciently convert 4 to 3.Since SH only reacts to 4 levels, measur-ing SH alone will miss this condition. Tebest way to measure this is to test moreextensively. Te additional tests recom-mended are a ree 3 and a ree 4.

Tere are many reasons why you may notcovert to the active orm o thyroid. Decien-cies in nutrients like iodine, iron, zinc andselenium are one reason. Another reason isi you are taking certain medications such asbeta blockers, birth control pills, estrogen, lithium and phenytoin. Other conditionsthat can cause poor conversion are aging, alcohol, diabetes, obesity and stress.

I you are a poor converter, there areoptions that can help treat this condi-tion such as getting just levothyroxine

(Synthroid, Unithroid, LevothrLevoxyl). Tese include desiccthyroid, liothyronine and compoucombinations. Desiccated thyroiessentially reeze-dried porcine thygland, so it contains both 4 andSince you are supplementing bothand 3, many times you will eel bon this medication.

For those who dont like the idtaking an animal product, thereother choices. Liothyronine (3available in tablet orm. Te problethat Liothyronine has a very short lie. (Hal-live measures how qua medication enters and is elimin

rom the body.) When you take liothyroit goes into the body and is eliminated

quickly. Tis means that liothyronine be dosed multiple times a day, oen 3times a day.

Alternatively, compounding allowsmaking a timed-release version o liothnine. When compounding it allows a pato take the medication only twice a day.

I you are seeing your doctor about thyroid, review the symptoms o low thyand circle any symptoms you have. Mtimes the doctor will say that the bloodsays your thyroid level is correct. I you a lot o symptoms, the doctor shoulreminded that he is not treating a bloodbut a patient. You may not win any riebut you are the patient.

experiencing a breath session is the only way to truly knowwhat it is. Words cannot genuinely describe this powerul, magical, sacred and healing experience. However, hearing

what transpires during a session oen puts people at ease andencourages their participation.

Te rst ocus during a session is reminding the student totake deeper breaths. Once their deep breathing is more stable, the instructor then brings their attention to the last part o theirbreath, where their upper chest rises. It only takes a ew minutes a day and consciously payingattention to our breathing to make lasting and proound changes.
