E very new experience enhances learning. Advancingthrough a vegan liestyle is no exception. Mistakes weremade and lessons continue to develop. Its called growth growing into a healthier way o lie. In February I

chose to adopt a vegan diet. Here are the lessons Im learning andaddressing on this vegan journey.

    1. Too many starchesI love root vegetables especially white potatoes. Although

they are a low-at, low-calorie ood, they still reside higher on theglycemic index (GI). I was consuming them daily because theywere lling, tasty and easy to mash with vegan butter and rice or

soy milk. Unortunately, how quickly I neglected to rememhow they spike blood sugar levels. A ew hours later, I was huand ready or my next carb-out. But, they are a source o diber, have vitamins and minerals, and help lower my cholestLesson learned: Continue eating potatoes and more comcarbohydrates, substitute with sweet potatoes or variety, andstarches in moderation.

    2. Not enough ironIn April, I condently approached my blood donation r

Te appointment snuck up on my calendar and I was less prepthan usual. My plan was to be diligent with my powdered gr

supplementation or a ull week prior to my donation. I love tbut get a bit relaxed when Im busy and orget to drink them eday. Well, I remembered their importance when my blooddenied because my iron count was two counts too low. BumLooking back, I didnt have much spinach or brussels sproutsweek, either. Lesson learned: Daily nutritional supplementaand eating a variety o plant-based oods aids in a balanced especially when ollowing an elimination diet.

    3. Decreased blood pressureTe benet o regularly donating blood is that Im well a

o my blood pressure. Although I was denied donation dumy iron count, an impressive reduction in my blood presreminded me o the benets o a plant-based diet. My numare normally in the average zone, but I was happy to hear thless than two months, my lower (diastolic) number had dropppoints. Lesson learned: A plant-based diet has health benets

    4. Getting in a rutWith this years cooler springtime, I was not a an o raw o

I crave warm oods and beverages. Steaming and roasting vegbles takes time and eort. Additionally, it takes mental prepara

to go to the o ce with a proper lunch prepared. Well, I got in a rut.I avored canned soups, with an emphasis on beans and/or vege-tables that were quick, easy and tasty. In this case, convenienceand tasty = high sodium. Soup in a can is aster, but not healthier. When I planned ahead to make homemade versions o my avor-ite soups; minestrone, bean, split pea, etc., I reduced my sodiumcontent while enjoying my comorting, warm, healthy oods. Mynext ocus is to reduce my consumption o ller crackers and breadwith my soup. Lesson learned: Preparation is strategic; with both

resh ruits and vegetables to eat on demand, and vegan meals ormealtimes especially at the o ce.

    5. Consume flling oods and beveragesIn cooler weather, I avored healthy coees and teas over water

to warm my body. But water is an easy, natural lling beverage.Homemade vegetable broth was one way I creatively consumedwarm water. Additionally, I drink lemon and hot water in themorning as a quick, warm detoxier. But to ll up I didntocus enough on low-at, ber-rich oods. When time was tight,I made convenience a priority. I over-consumed canned beansand hummus (with pita chips or crackers), and under-consumedresh, low-at oods like apples, brussels sprouts, and broccoli.Frozen ruits and vegetables dropped my body temperature justthinking about the idea. It was another example o getting in arut. My biggest challenge was eating the right amount o caloriesand lling oods at the right time o day. I commonly ound I washungry at 8:30 pm as a result o not eating properly at dinnertime.I started preerring popcorn beore bed, and messing up my diges-tion and sleep practice.

Yes, mistakes happened, but with much happiness. Its a growthopportunity and a healthier liestyle in development. As my energyincreases and my blood pressure decreases, Im happy to makemistakes as each ailure demonstrates accomplishing anotherphase in my vegan journey. Its not about the hiccups; its about

the healthy liestyle. Bring on an abundant summer harvest!

While many individuals have been counting downthe days until 85-degree weather, pets may not havebeen sharing the same enthusiasm. Te hot weathercan bring discomort to our our-legged riends.

Its widely known that keeping a dog chained up outdoors inthe sun and heat is cruel, as is keeping him locked in a car whilerunning errands. However, there are many other actors that comeinto play regarding keeping pets cool and comortable when themercury rises.

Unlike humans, pets cannot simply shed layers o clothes to cooldown. Nor do they have the communication skills to tell people toturn up the air conditioning. Its up to pet parents to be in tune withtheir pets needs and provide what they require. In order to keep petscontent when the weather is warm, consider these suggestions.

OutdoorsCool down. Have a source o water or pets to use to codown. Tis may be a retired baby pool, a misting hose, evdamp towel that can be used to rub over a pets coat. Be suthis water source doesnt pose a drowning threat (i.e., donleave a pool o water around young children or puppies).Offer shade. Te shade can reduce temperatures by sevdegrees. IndoorsKeep it cool. Dont turn o the air conditioning simplybecause you wont be home. I its incredibly hot indoors, petswill become uncomortable. Keep a ventilation source avail-able, such as an open window, turned-on ceiling an or leavethe A/C set to low.Leave water out. An indoor water bowl is a necessity, too.Check beore leaving the house that there is plenty o wateravailable to all pets.

Offer comfort. Summertime oen comes with loud thun-derstorms, motorcycles passing by or reworks. Tese loudnoises can startle pets. Routinely check on animals to be surethey arent rightened or doing damage to the house rombeing scared. I you will be out, have a neighbor check on thepet. A radio le on or a television can help mask the summersounds and soothe a scared pet.Groom the pet. alk with a groomer to decide on a cutthats comortable or the pet. While many people assumeshaving o all ur is the best option, ur actually insulates ananimal. Removing it all can put the pet at risk or sunburn.

Other TipsWalk dogs early in the morning and in early evening so thatthe jaunts take place when the weather is cooler.I youll be taking a dog along on a hike during warm weather,be sure to pack enough water or both o you.Consider the use o dog booties to protect pads rom hotpavement.Dogs may not be allowed on beaches during the summertourist season. ow can we reconcile eng shui with religion? Like anyreligion is intended to do, eng shui, or the awarenesso natural laws, can help a person live lie to theirullest potential. Even though eng shui is considered

an ancient Eastern art that was well practiced in early times, it isseeing a revival today in the West because o its proound, lie-changing results.

I recently gave a talk about eng shui, the art o placement ournishings in our environment, and I was struck by the questionsmany o the participants asked me. Tey either had never heard oeng shui or thought that it was a religion. I saw the hesitation osome o them to even approach me because they seemed unsureo how eng shui would aect them or their religious belies.

First o all, I think its important to understand that eng shuiis not a religion. It is the recognition o the natural laws o earth, and when we become aware o them and apply them to our living

space or work environment, we can benet rom the gisawareness oers. Like gravity and the law o cause and eect, tpatterns o energy exist whether or not we believe in them; by awakening to these patterns the gi that eng shui oewe are able to ully embrace a better lie, exactly what the Creintended or us.

Tis Average Jane column is slightly dierent rom what I havewritten in the past as I wanted to share the point o view o someonewho suers rom lymphedema and chronic pain, two conditionsthat I personally do not have. Tis is the story o a woman whosought treatment rom Jennie Kitelinger, MO, OR, CL, andounder o Quality Terapy, which oers in-home therapy orpeople suering rom chronic pain and other medical issues.

Jennie ounded Quality Terapy because she saw a need orin-home therapy in the area. She says that at her previous job sheoen saw patients who had to use Medivans or wheel chairs due tomobility problems as a result o pain, swelling or obesity.

I hated seeing the looks on their aces because o their embar-rassment about not being as independent as they wanted to be,she says. I wanted to help patients be more comortable and beable to help them in their homes.

Jennie recalls one woman who was struggling with obesity, whowell call Susan. Susan had tried on her own to lose weight and had

been to numerous doctors to get help or her problem. Te doctorscontinued to tell her she was just at and declared her home-bound. Needless to say, Susan was very discouraged. One day, ariend stopped by to visit. Suspecting there was more to the issuethan obesity, she asked to see Susans legs. Susan was very embar-rassed, but aer some convincing revealed her legs.

It seemed Susan suered rom chronic swelling that had turnedinto lymphedema, a condition o localized fuid retention andtissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system.

Te lymph system is connected to the immune system, Jennie

explained. It made sense as to why she was having so mimmune issues as well. We convinced her to see her doctor ocorrect diagnosis, and he conrmed our suspicions.

Shortly thereaer, a treatment plan was devised. Jennie wto Susans home and did a thorough evaluation to determinspecics o her concerns and measure the areas to be treated.to the severity o the situation, Jennie determined Susan netreatment ve days a week or the rst two weeks. reatment tniques included lymphatic massages combined with pneumpump therapy to get the fuid to recirculate back in the sys

Compression wraps or both legs were also applied to help the fuid rom back fowing into the leg.

Amazingly, over the next our weeks, Susan lost 70 pounfuid! She was so relieved to discover that she wasnt just oweight, and that she had a treatable medical issue. Tree molater, Jennie was able to decrease treatments to twice a week. Salso uses her own pump between treatments due to the seity o her condition. She continues to receive manual massand wraps. Now, down a total o 100 pounds, Quality Terahelping Susan learn how to live a more normal lie, as well a

a more nutritious diet. (She was down to one meal abecause so many people had told her that she simplybeen overeating.) Susan can now go to the bathroom aand use a walker.

Susans story has a very happy ending. I you or somyou know suers rom chronic pain, lymphedema, dtive issues, bromyalgia, arthritis, migraines anytthat troubles you that you cannot seem to get relie give Jennie a call at 920.462.4583 or email jkitelingnew.rr.com. Staying energized and keeping t can betough especially i youre not getting thenutrients you need. But while we tend tolook or new miracle herbs or nutrients, itcan be easy to orget about the basics likeingredients ound in liver, or instance.

You may not eat liver because o the taste, concerns about cholesterol or toxins. Tatsunderstandable. Te smell and favor o livercan make it an acquired taste, and peoplemay have ears about toxins in the liverdue to antibiotics or other environmentalactors. But youre missing out on important

    energizing nutrients,including iron and

    vitamin B12.

Get back to the basics get your absorbable iron!

Maybe you dont believe iron is veryimportant anymore. But i youre an activeperson, you burn up your stores o ironquickly. In act, many people suer rom aniron deciency without even knowing it.

Nonetheless, simply running out andpicking up any old iron supplement is not theanswer. Many o them arent well tolerated

heme iron ingested can be absorbed, versusabout 1 percent absorption o iron salts.

Te best liver extracts come rom beecattle raised without any chemical sprays, pesticides or antibiotics on the grassy plainso Argentina. Also, youll want a predi-gested orm o liver extract which is brokendown to be more readily absorbed by thebody. And, unlike eating liver, a concen-

trated extract (one using 20 lbs. o liver tomake 1 lb. o extract) doesnt have any at orcholesterol.

Combine with vitamin B12or even more benefts:

Combine this natural liver extract withmethylcobalamin. Tats the highly absorb-able orm o vitamin B12 that requires nobiological transormation because it ismade ready or absorption.

Symptoms o B12 deciency include:tiredness and eelings o weakness, irritabil-ity, vision diculties, loss o appetite, poormemory, brittle nails and prematurely grayinghair. Vitamin B12 can help i you suer romsleeping diculties, too. It plays a role inmelatonin production (the sleep hormone)

that helps you get the rest you need. While meats, poultry, eggs, sh, brewers

yeast, dairy products and seaood canprovide vitamin B12, you could eat allo these, and still have a deciency o the

vitamin. Tats because your digestivesystem may lack a protein called intrin-sic actor that converts a common orm o

vitamin B12, cyanocobalamin, to the meth-

ylcobalamin orm that the body uses best.

Folic acid a key partnerto vitamin B12

Another key member o the vitaminB amily is olic acid. Symptoms o olatedeciency have a lot in common with B12deciency: atigue and irritability, muscleweakness and headache.

Because many o the processed oodsthat are ortied with olic acid are grains-based, individuals with gluten sensitivi-ties arent likely to get the olate they needthrough diet alone. And although olate isound in dark leay greens, broccoli, cauli-fower, and pinto beans, the absorption oolate rom these sources is only about halo what youd get rom olic acid.

Folic acid works with vitamin B1reduce levels o homocysteine, an aminothat can damage the cardiovascular syand collagen the cushioning mabetween the joints. It is an excellent choadd to your active supplement regimeenergy and healthy exercise recovery.

Tis combination o nutrients can correct any deciencies that may

been slowing you down. Itll provide bnatural energy, reduce atigue and recotime rom exercise, provide a sense o being and a host o other benets. I youthat your workout (or just your busy dageneral) need a boost, it really can pay back to the basics!

Question: It seems that more and more people are taking shoil these days. Is this something you recommend?

Answer: Youre absolutely right sh oil is becoming verypopular, and or good reason. Tere are a number o health bene-ts associated with this supplement and, i experts had to choosebetween sh oil supplementation and a daily multivitamin/mineral, more and more would probably steer you toward sh oil.First o all, the Omega-3 atty acids in sh oil are generally consi-dered anti-infammatory, while Omega-6 atty acids are conside-red pro-infammatory. Unortunately, traditional western dietsare much higher in Omega-6s compared to Omega-3s, so trying

to incorporate mOmega-3s into your diet is just

common sense. In addition, Omega-3s have been shown to lotriglycerides levels, reduce heart attack and stroke risk, slowbuild-up o artery plagues and slightly lower blood pressure. i thats not enough, they have also been studied extensiveltheir neuroprotective eects related to Parkinsons, Alzheimand depression. I you decide to supplement with sh oil, tydosages start at 1,000 mg o EPA and DHA (the two promiatty acids) per day. Its also a good idea to incorporate at leastservings o low-mercury, atty sh per week.

Question: Can you provide a little reresher on workingwhen youre sick?

Answer: Everyone seems to hadierent opinion on this, but heresscoop. You oen hear people say working out is ne i its just a head costuy nose, coughing and other stuyou dont like, but can deal with. Tgenerally true, but i you have a ever, baches or other more serious symptomsshould leave the exercising to the rest oTis philosophy is actually pretty sobut consider these issues as well. Whenworking out, I dont really want peopleare sneezing and coughing around mand I would guess you dont either. Plike to work out with intensity, and Ia premium on the quality o my exerTereore, I would rather rest up or aor two, even i I just have a head cold. Question: I have several riends that ollow some o thepopular workouts that you oen see touted in inomercials and onthe internet. Is there anything special about these workouts? Doyou think its worth the money to invest in one?

Answer: Tats a good question. I have a ew riends that haveollowed P90X and some other popular programs as well. Here

are my thoughts. Many o these programs are just practical adap-tations o some o the latest and greatest tness research, oencoupled with some traditional exercise equipment. Add an expertwith a vibrant personality, and youve got a recipe or a successulprogram. Do these types o programs work? Sure, i you ollowthe program, stay committed and push yoursel (though theexpert is usually pretty good at that, too). Tat said, I wouldntsay theres anything special about them. Many (but not all) aresimply spin-os o Body Pump, with some high-intensity intervaltraining thrown in or good measure. Tis type o training workswell regardless o whether you ollow a structured program or not.Plus, I would argue that a certied personal trainer at your localhealth club could design a better workout or you, simply becauseits personalized. Teyll take into account your personal healthstatistics, tness level, time constraints, and many other variables. And theyll be there with you through it all in person! So, isit worth the money to purchase one o these programs? It mightbe, but your success really depends much more on you, and howdedicated you are to reaching your goals.

responsible or aecting overall circulation and health. With theirextensive and decades-long experience in laser technology, takingcare o large veins with RF waves and specialized lasers is a naturalt or these surgeons.

Large vein issues and treatmentsLarge veins in the legs can be prone to deep vein thrombosis

(DV) when blood clots orm. Patients also develop venous refuxdisease when the valves in the veins stop unctioning or become

damaged. Te saphenous vein, running rom the oot to the groin,is oen aected by these issues. For some patients, the pain they eelis hard to describe. Tey describe heaviness, like they are walkingwith weights on their legs. enderness, itching, burning or throb-bing in the leg may also occur i clots partially or completely blockthe vein. Many patients minimize their symptoms, as they dontremember when their legs elt good.

More than one non-invasive treatment option is available to treatlarge veins. Each patient responds dierently, so it is important tochoose a board-certied plastic surgeon oering more than onesolution, including VNUS closure and advanced laser technology.

With VNUS closure, the board-certied plastic surgeon usesultrasound to scan the leg(s), to see i venous disease is present. Atiny closure catheter is inserted into the diseased vein, deliveringradio-requency (RF) energy light to the vein wall. Te energy heatsthe vein rom the inside out, causing it to close. Once the vein isclosed, blood reroutes to other healthy veins.

Laser treatment o large veins involves an intense localized pulseo light targeting the aected area. Te surgeon may choose acombination o VNUS and laser during the procedure to achievethe best result. Regardless o the options used, patients resumenormal activities within days o the procedure.

Small and thread vein treatmentsBoard-certied plastic surgeons with vein expertise can treat

large and small veins in a ew o ce-based appointments. Teyimplement secondary closure techniques, such as microstab phle-bectomy, to treat smaller veins. Te skin is numbed over bulging

veins and the surgeon removes a small section. Te echosclerother-apy procedure is also popular and eective, with a solution injectedto close the vein under ultrasound guidance.

Te tiniest o veins, thread veins, can also be treated by a board-certied plastic surgeon with vein expertise. Veinwave technologyuses microwave energy to heat the vessels and is eective in delicateareas such as the ankles and the nose.

When considering treatment o big and small veins, it is impor-tant to evaluate a practice based on the experience o the board-certied plastic surgeon and his or her philosophy regarding total

vein care. Te end result o doing your homework and askingspecic questions during a consultation will mean healthy andbeautiul legs or you.
