    Fall has always been my avorite time o year. Tough it doesnt technically start until the 22 nd, the kids beingback in school triggers it or me. Not being a hot weather lover, Irelish in the cooling temperatures and continue to be amazed by the color ul landscape that begins to emerge.

    One amily tradition o ours has always been going apple pickingin September. In act, one o my avorite photos is that o my threechildren walking hand-in-hand between two rows o apple treesa er a success ul picking session ten years ago. Un ortunately, thisyears harvest will not be so plenti ul, as most crops in our areahave taken quite a hit this year due to the unusual spring weatherand the summer drought.     knee o a ootball player. Initially, this is very pain ul and causeslaxity in the sti e joint. Tis instability is the key to diagnosis, asthe torn ligament is NO visible on a radiograph. Palpation o this area can be di cult i the pet is tense or the area is swollen.Tis type o injury is less common in small dogs and cats. Smallercanines are more prone to luxating patellas or wiggly knee caps.Most sti e injuries are considered surgical problems, but withgood nutrition, appropriate weight, e ective joint supplementsand modalities, such as acupuncture or laser, many knees can be

    restored and managed pain- ree or years without surgery.Certain breeds are also predisposed to specifc types o leg mala-

    dies, and certain diseases are commonly concurrent with specifcorms o lameness. For example, many dogs with Cushings disease

    develop torn cruciate ligaments. Large breed lovers know theirdogs are predisposed to hip dysplasia. Tis awareness helps the petguardian to take preventative measures. It is important to preventexcessive weight gain in all pets, but especially those predisposedto musculoskeletal disorders, such as dachshunds, who commonly su er rom intervertebral disc disease. Tis can cause lameness inany leg, hind end weakness or even paralysis. Also use nutritionalsupplements, even in puppies and kittens, to avoid expression orslow the onset o genetic conditions. Standard Process protomor-phogen and whole ood supplements are per ect or this. My avor-ites are Ligaplex II and Gota Kola, which stimulate collagen repair.

    Un ortunately, just as we can develop arthritis, so can our pets.But even the severity o , causes o and treatments or arthritis arewidely varied. Dont miss the possibility that your dogs lame-ness could be due to Lyme disease. It has become quite routineto screen dogs or Lyme disease annually along with their heart-worm test. Remember, this test indicates exposure, not neces-sarily active in ection. It is normal or your dog to test positiveeven i he has ought o the disease by mounting an immuneresponse, which is measured on the blood test. However, i yourpet is concurrently ill or lame, Lyme disease may be the cause.

    Initiation o early antibiotic treatment with doxycycline can be very e ective. It is possible to do ollow-up testing to urtherquanti y the extent o in ection and to monitor treatment prog-ress. Tis test is called a Quant C6.

    Most arthritis in pets is associated with aging. Some can beimmune-mediated, just as in humans. It is very sad to have to euthanizean otherwise happy and healthy pet because his joints are too sti and pain ul to get up to go to the bathroom.

    We continuously stress a species-appropriate, meat-based dietand a decreased vaccination schedule because this type o veteri-nary care program decreases the common stressors that contributeto many disorders, including lameness due to arthritis. Starchesin typical kibble diets are in ammatory and cause weight gain.Excessive vaccinating is unnecessary and can be a burden to theimmune system. itre testing in lieu o vaccination is readily avail-able and very help ul.

    Our utilization o acupuncture and laser treatments has kept us

    busy striving to keep pets com ortable while avoiding the usnon-steroidal anti-in ammatory drugs, which are notorious side e ects, such as liver and kidney damage, dry eye, and stomand intestinal ulceration. It is surprising how much dogs and, ycats enjoy their acupuncture or laser treatments. Tey actuallwant to come to the vet!

    hen we think o being a victim, we naturally associ-ate that with some sort o abuse, be it mental, verbal,sexual or physical. Tese are some o the most common

    orms o abuse that may indeed allow an individual to become a victim or not. More importantly, will they choose to let go o theexperience and/or the past or it to be used or a greater purposein their li e?

    In thinking about the vict prefx, its true meaning is toconquer, yet the victim is the one who is conquered. Usually the

    victim is characterized with a sense o eeling powerless, moretimes than not. Tus, the victim mentality becomes their reality and can prevent them rom having success in many other areaso their lives. Te inability to progress in the direction the victimdesires is due to a constant eeling o de eat, blame and injustice.Giving up becomes a common occurrence in a victims li e.

    Its only in choosing to learn rom a horrifc situation or experi-ence that the higher road can be taken, as remaining a victimwill only result in the same vicious cycle o negative results. Tey say that out o adversity comes opportunity, which I truly believe,as I too have lived through many orms o abuse, but have notchosen to ever be a victim.

    John Maxwell once said, Urgency; dont let it come to yourom the outside. Start rom the inside and have an urgency to live

    your best li e now, and, I add, despite the negative circumstancesyouve encountered numerous times in your li e. Remembering to

    ocus on the positives and smiling daily, even i you have to ake itinitially, is truly going to help you move orward and see the lessonin it all. Most importantly, it will help you to achieve success andhappiness, and to live a healthy li estyle.

    When you look at the importance o choosing to be a victorwith your health and owning your past circumstances, it truly

    will make a di erence in moving towards a healthier li eswhether you want to lose weight, minimize the stress in your or achieve a ftness goal youve always wanted, but never qbelieved you could reach.     omeopathy is a highly systematic branch o medicinebased on the Principle o Similarities: like is cured by like. It power ully stimulates the bodys vital orce (li e

    energy) and is based on a ew simple but pro oundly insight-ul principles o Nature to treat illnesses. It has been known to

    be around since the time o Hippocrates, the Father o WesternMedicine, born 460 B.C. Homeopathy became an organized,established medical treatment through the fndings, teachings and

    writings o Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the 1780s. Dr. Hahnemannbegan a quest or a better way o providing healthcare using theprinciples o Similars. While working on a project, he became

    ascinated with a species o South American tree bark (cinchona)that was being used to treat malaria-induced ever. Hahnemanningested the bark and discovered that it caused symptoms similarto malaria. All o his urther research proved the same results o Similars, that like is cured by like.

    Dr. Hahnemanns rate o success in treatment was so high thatmany other physicians started to study and treat their patients withthis therapy, both physically and emotionally. Te frst homeo-pathic medical school started in the United States in the late 1800s.In the early 1900s, there were 22 homeopathic medical schools, 100homeopathic hospitals and over 1,000 homeopathic pharmaciesin the United States. Very prestigious medical schools like BostonUniversity, Stan ord University and New York Medical Collegewere among educational institutions that taught homeopathy. Inthe early 1920s, many schools closed rom decreased popularity by in uence o the American Medical Association. Tis, too, wasthe time when drug companies were becoming more power ul. Inother parts o the world the popularity o homeopathy grew andcontinues to this day. With people becoming more disgruntled

    about traditional medicine in the United States, the side e ectsdrugs and wanting a more holistic health approach, homeopathas been on the rise or the past 16 years.

    In preparation o homeopathic remedies, the Law o Minimum Dose is precedent. Tis states that the most e ectivdose or a disorder is the minimum amount necessary to produa response. Te process is known as potentisation, and involvessequence o progressive dilution and a rhythmic shaking, term

    succussion. Normally, 1 part o the source substance is added9 parts o water and shaken rhythmically. Tis is known as a (decimal) dilution or 1 part in 10. One part o this is then takand added to another 9 parts o water, and again succussedgive a 2x dilution, or 1 part in 100. Similarly, a 3x dilution part in 1000. Dilutions are also made on a centesimal scale, opart in 100. Classifcation o the dilutions are used: low potenc1x to 30x, or 1c to 15c; medium potencies: 30c to 200c; and hpotencies: above 200c. Te succussions must transmit some o tenergy o the original substance to the neutral matter in whichwas diluted, which then is transmitted to the vital orce (enero the patient like to like, vibrational energy to vibratienergy.     Question: A riend o mine eats fve to six smaller meals eachday and keeps telling me that I should be doing the same. Arethere actually any benefts to doing this, especially i three mealsper day are satis ying?Answer: Experts have been telling us to eat more requently throughout the day or years now. And the prevailing wisdomsays that increasing your meal requency will increase yourmetabolism and help with weight loss. Te theories behind theseperceived benefts are sound, but un ortunately, much o theresearch con icts with these statements. In act, numerous studies

    indicate that increasing the number o meals consumed per day has very little impact on overall ood intake and body composi-tion. Tis makes sense since increased requency doesnt seem tostrongly a ect total daily energy expenditure or resting metabolicrate either. Tere may be some beneft when it comes to appe-tite control and satiety, but the jury is still out on this too. I yourenergy level waxes and wanes throughout the day, then eatingmore requently may be advantageous. But i youre satisfed eatingthree squares a day, then by all means continue to do so.

    Question: I would do almost anything to get a nice six-pack.Can you give me some tips and hints?Answer: Absolutely! Not everyone has this particular goal, butthe ones who do seem to be very passionate about it. Is this really true?Answer: I was wondering when this question would come Tis is actually a very common myth that has been perpetuateby consumers and pro essionals alike or a very long time. be told, there is no strong connection between eating at night aweight gain. Obviously, i your calorie intake exceeds your caexpenditure, then you will certainly gain weight, but this is truematter when those calories are consumed. So could the calortaken in at night contribute to weight gain? Sure. But it still comdown to a calories in vs. calories out issue.     o the actors that can in uence i a person gets cancer is his orher exposure to carcinogens. Tough many people have heard o carcinogens, those same people might be less amiliar with whatcarcinogens actually are, and i theres anything they can do toreduce exposure to and protect themselves rom these potentially deadly substances.

    hat is a carcinogen?Substances and exposures that can lead to cancer are called carcin-ogens. Carcinogens do not always cause cancer, and substancesconsidered carcinogens have varying levels o cancer-causingpotential. Minimal exposure to certain carcinogens may increaseones risk o getting cancer signifcantly, while other carcinogensmay cause cancer only a er prolonged exposure at high levels.

    hat happens when a person has cancer?Cancer is caused by changes in a cells DNA. Tis change can becaused by carcinogens, though some carcinogens have no directimpact on DNA. For example, a carcinogen may cause cells todivide at a aster rate than is normal, and that accelerated divisioncan increase the chances that DNA changes will occur.

    Many initiatives have attempted to improve the quality o

    school lunches provided by school ca eterias. Government regu-lations to reduce the amount o at and sodium in these lunches,and to introduce more whole grains, ruits and vegetables, are onesuch initiative. Parents o students who pre er to bring their ownlunches rom home may be le wondering how they can createhealthy lunches their kids will eat.

    M old can grow in many areas o a home. Tough notalways dangerous, mold can, in certain instances, causeserious illness.Experts estimate that there are tens o thousands o di erent

    types o mold in the world. A type o ungi, molds are single-celledor multicellular organisms without chlorophyll that reproduce by spores and live by absorbing nutrients rom organic matter. Fungican be classifed as molds, mushrooms, rusts, mildews and yeasts.Some o the common types o molds ound indoors include clado-sporium, alternaria, penicillium and aspergillus.

    Te Centers or Disease Control and Prevention states thatmolds can be a health hazard to some people. Some individuals aremore sensitive to molds than others, and may experience anything

    rom a mild allergic reaction to severe symptoms, such as troublebreathing or other complications with their lungs.

    Mold spores travel very easily through the air and can also travel

    on people and pets. Coming in contact with mold in one locationand then traveling to another can cause spores that hitched a rideto dislodge in the new area. People who may have never had moldproblems at home be ore can fnd that mold quickly takes root i mold spores have been accidentally brought into a home.
