Are you settling into 2015?Its hard to believe just one short month ago marked the start o a new year.

Te holidays and their afermath can be a chaotic whirlwind, paired with estiveparties and busy schedules. Its always an anticipated part o the year, but itseasy to get wrapped up in the renzied nature o it all. January is a great time toreflect on all that was, and all there is to come in the new year.

And then theres February: the calm afer the storm. Its an interesting month, and can be hard to characterize especially here in Wisconsin. It doesnt havethe same resh, new quality as January, but we havent quite made it to earlyspring and all that a new season brings. Te bright snow has turned to slush, andrigid temperatures are just beginning to warm up (sometimes!).

Settling into this month can eel comortable in a positive way, but also, unor-tunately, brings a sense o relaxation that has the potential to slow momentumand drive toward recently ormed New Years resolutions and goals.

Te content in the ollowing pages o Natures Pathways is resh and new eachmonth, but like February, holds easy, comorting avorites that you can alwayscount on. Monthly staples like Healthy Kids, Healthy Pets, Herb Blurb andHealthy Eating are among several articles that will provide new motivation andthe tools to continue the momentum that started 2015.

I one o your missions this year is to learn to sel-love and sel-care, payspecial attention to Sel-love and the healthy ripple effect, by Emily Niesen (shealso provides a delicious recipe or Portobello Open-Faced Sandwiches in thisissue!). Are you working on becoming more organized? Te emotional baggageo clutter, by Jeanine Hanson Lewis is the perect read to get you started.

Maybe being conscious o your health is a new goal. Weve got you covered!Did you know snails have over 25,000 teeth? Amy Sergeant, D.D.S., offersun crafs or kids and more cool acts in, Childrens Dental Health Month.

In Heart work, Deb Freeman takes a more spiritual approach to health andocuses on how to stop ear rom defining you.

The purpose o osteopathy is to find health. In the wordso the ounder o osteopathy, A.. Still, o find healthshould be the object o the doctor. Anyone can find

disease. Health is not just the absence o symptoms. From anosteopathic standpoint, health involves the optimization o howthe body unctions and interrelates. It requires action on the parto the patient. Certainly someone who eats a crappy diet with theplurality o calories coming rom high ructose corn syrup andtrans ats and alcohol should not be considered healthy even ithey are young and ree o symptoms. Te same goes or peoplewho are sedentary or who have other liestyle issues.

Tere are people who have sequelae rom injury or who havechronic diseases, or who do not optimize their ability to be healthy.Sometimes this is on the basis o medical noncompliance, inabilityto afford medications or ignorance o how to prepare healthy ood.

Providers o osteopathy seek to find health in the injured, the

chronically ill and in the asymptomatic population. Te principlethrough which they work is that lie is motion. In order to promotehealth there must be balanced appropriate motion available to theorganism, in this case the human being. Motion is not just reer-ring to range o motion. Although balanced motion about a jointis desirable, a gymnast or dancer is not necessarily healthier thansomeone who has not ocused on extreme flexibility, which goesbeyond the normal populations range. People can understand themotion o joints. Tere is a balance in the length o the joint capsule, the bones are centered about the proper axis o motion, the musclesinfluencing the joint are balanced in length, strength and neuro-logical input and sensation. Te blood supply must be normal. Tearteries have to be ree to deliver oxygen and nutrition, the veinshave to be ree to drain away wastes and make room or resh bloodto come in. Te lymphatic system has to drain away and exchangethe extracellular fluid between cell layers and organs.

Most people are not aware o other motions in the body that areessential to health. Organs, the solid structures in your chest andabdomen, and viscera, the hollow tubes o your gut also need tobe ree to move within their appropriate cavities. o do this theyhave to be able to roll off each other during breathing and move-ment. I this doesnt happen, their unction may be impaired.

Even the brain and its parts need to be able to move relative tskull bones and membranes o the skull. I not, individuals experience brain og or headache.

In the days beore successul drugs, traditional osteopathyan entire medical approach unto itsel. In the 1918-1919 influpandemic, the case atality rate, the percentage o inected patdying rom the flu is estimated to have been somewhere betweeto 6 percent. Crude data collected by the American Osteopathic Aciation documented a case atality rate o 0.25 percent. What theyto offer were osteopathic mobilization techniques, which optimthe motions o the ribs, the thoracic spine, pumped lymphatic tand sinuses, and normalized motion o the diaphragm.

Te efforts o the osteopaths theoretically prevented station in the lungs and development o secondary pneumonia. enhanced drainage rom the lungs so that the patients lungsnot fill up with fluid to the point that they could not exch

oxygen and carbon dioxide. Te osteopaths o the day oundestablished increased health within the sick individuals andmade a difference in death rates rom the disease by decreathe death rate rom 25 in 1,000 to 2.5 in 1,000.

Each body part has its own movement patterns and interwith adjacent structures in ways that are optimal or healthefficient utilization o energy. In the case o the stomachexample, it relates to the spleen, pancreas, transverse colonkidney, diaphragm and esophagus. Te back o the skull the thoracic spine influence the autonomic nervous input tostomach. All should be normalized to address symptoms arrom problems such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GEor hiatal hernia.

Jed Downs, M.D., MPH, has been studying osteopathy1995. Formerly, he worked in occupational medicine until ping his passion ull time at Madison Manual Medicine, Chapel Valley Road in Fitchburg. He uses osteopathic technto manage consequences (pain and loss o unction) o tr

Sometimes I wonder, Why do we treat our cars better thanwe treat ourselves? For instance, we change the oil in our

vehicles (or we are supposed to) every 3 months/3,000miles, we get our brakes and shocks done when needed, and weget a tune-up or our vehicles when necessary. All these things we

do or our cars, yet arent our bodies and overall wellness juimportant? Shouldnt we be maintaining ourselves just as mucour vehicles? We all seem to get so wrapped up in this ast pworld that we orget to take care o ourselves better thanmaterial items. We then, in turn, get burnt out, wore down

our health deteriorates. We all know that i we took better caourselves and bodies our health would overall just be better.

Doing things that make us eel happy or relaxed definlowers cortisol levels in the body. Tis will in turn lower stressed you eel. Higher cortisol levels also attribute to unwabelly at (that stuff we all sooo love NO!). So please love ysel and treat yoursel right. Do what you know will makeeel great and healthy. We treat our car to an oil change evemonths as part o its maintenance. Shouldnt that be part oown maintenance as well?

Here are a few ideas about how to relax orto make you feel good:

Read a book.Something that interests you or that can pyou in so you can orget about the stresses rom your day

Take a nice long hot bath or shower.I youre soakinthe tub, its nice to add some sea salt or Epsom salt with nessential oils. Lavender is very relaxing.

Get a massage or facial. Its amazing what 1-hour o pand quiet with someone relaxing your whole body can do

Get your feet rubbed! You and a partner can exchangebut i that is not an option, get a pedicure.

Take a walk with a friend.Tis is a great time to catcheach other up on your lives too.

Do something that expresses your emotionscreatively.Draw, paint, sing in the shower and dance inyour living room. You can then let it all out and in turn let goo any built up emotions that may be blocking your energy.

Take a nap.We let our kids do it, so why cant we! Remem-ber this is great maintenance.

Watch a movie or a show that you like.Something thatwill make you laugh is the best.

Sometime during the preschool years you notice your childhas stopped responding to his/her name and then oralcommunication may cease or slow down. You may notice

less eye contact or social interaction. Ofen you will notice repeti-tive behaviors or nonunctional use o toys. You may notice aninability to stay on task or stay ocused on an activity. Noise orlights could be disturbing to your child. You or others may noticethat your child is clumsy, awkward, seems irritated by the clothesthey wear or are very picky eaters. Tese behaviors and morecould be the result o attention deficit disorder (ADD), attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism.

Te National Institute o Neurological Disorders and Stroke(NINDS) coners that autism is a spectrum disorder that is parto a range o complex neurodevelopment disorders, which can betypified by delays in social interaction, communication and repet-itive patterns o behavior.

ADD/ADHD are also neurodevelopment disorders. Tey arecharacterized by the inability to ocus and listen to directions.Because ADD/ADHD can be part o the autism spectrum, they canbe misdiagnosed. Both disorders have varying degrees o severity.

Many parents and researchers believe that environmentaltoxins, exposure to mercury rom the MMR, metals rom vaccina-tions and other medications affect these disorders. People affectedwith ADHD/ADD and autism may see improvement in somesymptoms when toxins and metals are removed rom the body.

Terapeutic essential oils have the ability to detoxiy and removemetals rom the body, as well as stimulate the limbic region o thebrain connected to the emotional and hormonal centers. Scien-tists also believe that by stimulating the limbic region o the brainpeople with ADD/ADHD and autism may also see improvementin their symptoms.

Those who have loved and lost a special pet know the heart-ache and grie when they pass. Why am I hurting so much?you may ask. Moira Anderson Allen, M.Ed, has written a

pamphlet called en ips on Coping with the Loss o Your Pet. In it,she answers some poignant questions and suggests ways to expresseelings and memories in poems, stories or letters to your pet. Teollowing is an excerpt rom my husbands ribute to our Rudi:

She was born somewhere within Dodge County, orphaned at ayoung age and living on the concrete floor o some basement ina home near Hustisord, WI. Friends o Animals advertised heror sale, and to acquire her we paid $17. She was o no particular

pedigree that we could tell. Te local veterinarian said her parentswere probably Doberman and German Shepherd. She was, to us,simply a mutt. We named her Rudabella or Rudi or short.

Rudi loved sharing the couch with her Momma, ofen turningon her back to better extend her paws to be rubbed. We ofen teasedher that her paws smelled like Fritos. It was a ritual or Rudi to knowwhen her Momma was coming home rom school. I Momma waslate, there would be some whining, but eventual glee with her arrival.Ten the ritual would be to grab her squeaky toys, lie on her back, eetup in the air, squeaking away to celebrate Mommas return.

When yson, our daughters Doberman would visit, Rudi reluc-tantly accepted him. At first, there was some snarling and showingo the teeth. Eventually when ysons presence became permanent, the snarling and all such episodes aded away, and Rudi and ysonbecame best riends. We would ofen visit the area dog park. ysonran laps and went nuts over birds, but Rudi would just meanderwith a distinct smile as to say thanks, this is the day the Lord hasmade. We eel Rudi was a gif rom God and showed us so many oHis qualities. She was aithul, loyal, trustworthy, showing uncondi-tional love as a companion, a solace in difficult times.

restlessness, and all signs indicated she was in increasing pFour days beore Rudi died, she was given a tranquilizer to her sleep at night. Tat almost did her in. A ride home and she could hardly wait to the door o the van open. She was happy to be home!

Breast cancer survivors dont understand the word no.Weve heard it too many times. Te cold gray sky saidto stay inside. A steady mist ell. It definitely was not the

warm, sunny, end o July day everyone expected while at ourretreat. It was, however, our kayaking day on Lake Superior. Teweather would not stop us instead it would make us stronger.Everyone agreed to go. Each o us had aced cancer and screamedNo! at it with all our might. A little rain would not interere withour plans.

Kayaking was a structured activity and part o our learning tobe a part o nature to do something physical, something spir-

itual, to listen to the water and to listen to ourselves. Kayakingencompasses all o these and more.

Lake Superior is a place o story and spirit, along with theislands that make up the Apostle Islands. Our guide took us to abeautiul inlet on Madeline Island that eventually led out to themuch larger lake. Te tranquility was beautiul even on a rainycold day. Te inlet protected us rom strong wind and rockingwaves. Each o us was about to write more o our own personalcancer story upon the Lake Superior water.

A steady stillness surrounds you when youre in your kayak andon the water. Te oar slices through the water silently and yourkayak soundlessly skims across the water. You are submerged butnot submerged - on the surace but not on the surace. A kayak putsyou in the moment more than any other activity I can imagine.

Tere is a peaceul oneness with the water. Te rhythm opaddling along with the inhaling and exhaling o all that resh aircreates a kind o meditative state.

Kayaking changes perspective. You see everything rom themiddle, not rom the shore. You have control over where your kayak

ventures to and at what pace. Tere is empowerment in a kayak.Kayaking heals. Cancer, surgeries, treatments and medications

had taken their toll on our bodies and our spirits. Fear creeps in.

It can settle in and eat away at your hope. Yet, water has its purification and renewal powers. Water replaces ear with and lie. Water trickled down rom the oar and onto your Te mist coming down, sideways, rom every direction cleaspirits. Kayaking connected the healing aspects o phyemotional and spiritual together. Every stroke made me eel mpowerul and arther away rom cancer.

When there is a storm, kayakers are supposed to raf up come together and hold on to the ropes o each others kayaksride out the storm. You dont try to paddle anywhere. You justtogether. Te point is to make yoursel bigger or large boats t

you and to rescue you. However, theres another point, too. Instruggles, dont you want to raf up so you can help one anothrough the storms? You do. Te concrete becomes anothero the metaphor.

Afer about an hour, our group came together to assessprogress and make decisions. One kayak was filling up with wand in constant need o the hand pump. Te mist had chaninto rain. We headed back in silence to reflect on our experie

Kayaking proved to me once again I could conquer my Not just conquer, but actually excel in this new experience. Einch o me was soaked, yet I elt antastic! I was stronger inside and out.

Once out o the water I started to shiver. Yet I knew this wathe toughest part o my retreat. Te toughest part or me was eathat morning as I took an emotional risk when I shared scary po my cancer story with my ellow retreatants, most people o wI had known or a couple days, who are now riends.

I will paddle on in the warmth and sunshine. I may paagain in the cold and rain. I can do anything. I am a survivor

Even i Valentines Day is just a Hallmark holiday or you lacka date on February 14, the month o February is a greattime to reevaluate sel-care and sel-love. No matter what

your status or point o view o the holiday is, we all could use alittle improvement in this area. Lets explore some un and healthyways to do this. I think youll be surprised about what a little sel-love will do to your overall well-being.

Reflect and forecastFor this activity you will need a pen and piece o paper. Makethree columns. In the first column, list all o your accomplish-

ments o 2014 and thus ar in 2015. Write them down, no matterhow small. I you struggle with this, take it one month at a time.Look back at your calendar and emails. Still struggling? ry tolook at it through someone elses eyes. Someone that is not so

judgmental. In the second column, write a to-do list or the resto the year. o help narrow it down, take a moment and think otwo to three people in your lie who depend on you and/or you

consider a close riend. What do you want to do this year makes you a better person or them? For yoursel? urn twants into intentions and write them down on your list. Dmake this more difficult than it is; the first three people thatinto your head are most likely the people to consider or this ecise. Te first items that come to your mind or who you wanbe or what you want to do should go down on paper as intent

Narrow these intentions down to manageable tasks. For exambe a loving wie is a huge, overwhelming task. However, ibreak it down into action items like, make husbands avmeal once a week and schedule an out o town weekend get

in the spring, these items are now goals that can be accompliand with excitement. In the third column, write down everytyoure doing right now or that you have to do this year thatno longer want to do, regardless o whether or not its practiclet go o right now or the ear o letting someone down. Whayou want to stop doing? For each item, write a plan or howwill stop doing it or not do it ever. Be patient, some items migheasy to cross off; others might take some time and thought toyour just say no attack. Give yoursel permission to not nereason. Keep this list somewhere where you can look and eas ofen as needed.

CleanseDiet, detox and deprivation are usually the first words come to mind when one hears the word cleanse. Your sel-approach to cleansing is more enjoyable and rewarding. Whasome oods you love to cook, purchase and eat? Are these healthy? Not sure? Ask yoursel i they have essential vitamand minerals to keep your immune system strong and proenergy or maintaining an active liestyle. Are these whole oI not, are the ingredients on the nutrition label pronounce

Its so easy to get caught up in negative assumptions andconversations. Make an effort not to make assumptions oothers and situations. Escape rom negativity when you can.

Tere are so many positive actions you can take instead. An optimistic attitude works wonders. Happy people have more

energy to do meaningul and helpul things or themselves andothers. Be mindul in everyday activities. Play and laugh. Tankthose that help you and be grateul or the little things.

Healthy, happy people take care o themselves. Tey are smarterabout what they eat, how they exercise and when they need torest. Its OK to slow down once in a while and just observe.

Its important to perhaps make a did list o what was accom-plished rather than always ocusing on what it is we need to do. Prior-itize your needs rom your wants. Simpliy instead o making thingsso complicated when its not necessary. Reserve time or yoursel tobe yoursel and really enjoy lie, people and all the world has to offer.

Lets make a commitment to be good to ourselves by choosingto have a more positive attitude. We will be stronger, live longer

and enjoy our lives and appreciate those around us so much mNegativity takes way too much energy out o us that could be

    in more meaningul ways.

    DUALITY IS AN ILLUSION

Te Celts shun a belie in duality or it introduces judgment, which introduces the concept o more than and less than. A beliethat begins to tamper with the concept and flow o oneness in all.

    TIME IS FLUID AND CIRCULAR

o the ancients, time was marked by the movement o theheavens cyclical and fluid. Even today the Irish are a peopleo a natural flow, seeming to know how to work with time, place

and situation; partnering with these orces, allowing them to be,rather than attempting to use or harness them. It is the magicthat one eels on a trip to Ireland, the luck o the Irish as eventsevolve and all all together at precisely the right time and place.

    CREATIVE HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

A glorious creative center lies within each o us; a belie in theimmense creative power o the human consciousness to go outrom itsel and enter the nature o things.

From this springs the Irish love o riddle, the symbology owords, a nimble shape shifing o the mind. Teirs is a psychicspace set aside or the expansion and fluid boundlessness oconsciousness, that by going deeply into the moment we cantranscend time and space. It is owing to this that to this day theancient Celtic notion o it tis and it tisnt persists and it is saidthat an Irishman is the only person on the ace o the earth whocan eloquently argue both sides o a question at the same time.

Indeed. Te music o what happens. Living what is in themoment sans judgment. So ancient. So enlightened. May youhear the music o what happens and eel the luck o the Irish thisSt. Patricks Day and throughout the year.

Needle-less acupuncture might seem like an oxymoronat first glance. How can you do acupuncture withoutneedles? Easy. Let me explain a bit o background on the

technique called Shonishin without needles, used or kids.Shonishin is a Japanese word sho means little, ni means chil-

dren and shin means needle. It is a highly refined therapy specifi-cally used or inants and children to strengthen their respiratory, digestive and immune systems. Kids have a lot o vital energy, arecontinually growing, learning and developing. Tis means thatthey dont need a lot o stimulation at acupuncture points andchannels in order to receive the benefit.

A typical Shonishin treatment involves gentle stimulationrom rubbing, pressing or tapping o various acupuncture points

with special copper and stainless steel tools. Most children enjoycoming in or treatment, and find the session relaxing and playlike. Parents are ofen able to hold their child during the treatment;however, most children enjoy playing and squirming around.

When it comes to treating kids, it might not look like a lot is happen-ing; however, since their systems change so quickly, less is ofen more.reatments usually take only 5-15 minutes o actual treatment time.

    Common conditions treated byShonishin include:

Coughs Asthma Allergies Eczema Colic Fever Constipation Diarrhea Bedwetting

Sleep disorders Hyperactivity Recurrent inections Symptoms rom vaccinations

Shonishin treatments work best when provided preventator at the first sign o symptoms. Chronic conditions also grbenefit rom Shonishin treatments; however, they might reqmore requent sessions. Shonishin treatments are a sae, etive, noninvasive way to boost your childs immune systemstrengthen his or her overall constitution.

While winters flus and colds are still being passed aroundclassroom and beore springs allergies appear, bring your cin to strengthen his or her bodys own healing mechanisms. your child a step up when it comes to naturally fighting the virgoing around with needleless acupuncture.

You may not have a choice as to when or how you die, butyou can decide daily the way in which you live, a truth thatis never more apparent or ully appreciated than when

death is imminent. But in a sense, isnt death always imminent?Arent we all, in essence, terminally ill inected by biologicalprocesses that will eventually diminish and end our lie throughthe inescapable passage o time? Not to mention the potential orpremature death.

Yet it is because o the variable time that you have the privi-lege, opportunity and power to choose how you will live each dayand hence directly affect the quality o the time you do have! Youcan decide daily what path you will walk into the uture, and ulti-mately the memories you will have to look back on.

Te only final destination in lie is death; it is the quality othe journey there that is lie. When death draws nigh, it is onlythrough the caliber o your memories and the level o content-ment, orgiveness and peace in your heart that you will knowwhether your trip was a success.

Every new day is a reshopportunity to start anew and decide whether you are going totruly live and enjoy your lie, discover all your potential, or simplylose it all to time and inaction!

I you eel resistant to what I put orth here, or i it awakenssomething meaningul deep within you, I would like you to seri-ously consider a ew questions: Wouldnt you honestly preer tolive and die with a ulfilled, happy heart and spirit, rather thanonly being able to look back and wonder what might have beenor why you wasted so much time worrying instead o acting? Inact, how does your true heart really want to be able to look backat your one and only shot at lie?

Doesnt the possibility that you may end up wallowing in

sel-disappointment, desperately longing or one more chto do something differently or take a mulligan on some dsion that lef you empty, bother you? What about all the peyou may have met and enjoyed, all the riends, lovers experiences?

Te question you really need to ask yoursel is whether youtruly comortable with the possibility o wasting such an incible gif that is lie. I you are not, then what are you goindo to prevent that rom happening and when are you goinbegin? oday? Maybe right now? Hey, its your lie and totally call. Live it or lose it! Our unconscious Aquarius, in a misguided attempt to eel thebelonging, may yield too quickly to peer pressure, thus losingindividual will, waiting or others to prompt our decisions andactions. Or in ear o belonging, we may run away rom conron-tations, detach rom emotional situations, aloo and waitingendlessly or more inormation.

What needs healing and growth? Our Aquarius ego can ofen eel like an outsider, estranged by

the rest o humanity, eeling very different, like something iswrong with us, with no place in the world. For comort, we mightpurposeully try to stand apart by being contrary, eccentric orrebellious, thus eeling in control o our aloneness. Yet our innatedrive or connection keeps us trying to belong. Instead o real, intimate riendships, humanitarian causes or technological websmight dominate our social lie.

From this position as outsider, we are orced to look at the worldmore objectively, to discover why we eel alienated, and eventuallysee a much bigger picture o our place in the world. Our intuitioninorms us o how the outer world reflects the complexity o ourinner being and we gradually eel more integrated and connectedto others and to the whole. Eventually, the synergy o human spiriteels like home.

Do you treat others as whole and specialor do you only see them as serving a particular unction? Do youhonor your intuition? Are you open to creating win/win situa-tions? In a world that alls short o your ideals, can you still eelyour loving connection to humanity and know you have a place?

Additional support (current planetary transits)Mercury will be retrograde (backward) in Aquarius rom Jan. 21to Feb. 12. Tis will keep your mind ocused on group endeavorsand innovative changes in your lie. Meanwhile, Venus and Marsadvance into Pisces, bringing soululness to your relationships anddesires. In late February, as Venus and Mars merge on the cusp oPisces/Aries, romantic passion could evolve into mystical bliss.

Te new moon is on Feb. 18. Te moon and sun, joined right onthe cusp o Pisces, and nearby Neptune, will call to your spiritualheart your longing or divine oneness. With Saturn squaring(90 degrees) this in Sagittarius, this longing may seem to conflictwith your duty to reality, but you will know otherwise. Under thisnew moon, set your intention by the next ull moon to experiencethe reality o the oneness o your soul with another. Venus andMars will certainly be doing their part.

Tis is one o a our-part series on natural, nontoxic, eco-riendly wood finishes. Lookor the next installment in next months

    issue, at www.naturespathways.com orhttp://northwoodscasket.com/blog.

In the process o building a sustain-able and eco-riendly casket company, weve had to learn a lot about eco-

riendly wood finishes. Weve learned howto achieve a wide variety o beautiul woodfinishes without using harmul chemicals. Most o our learning has been a mattero rediscovering the historic techniquesmastered by 16th century English crafs-men. In this article well briefly cover thehistory, chemistry and useul techniquesor achieving natural waxed finishes.

Waxes have been used or centuries toseal and protect wood suraces. Waxes areeffective sealers and provide durable andprotective coating. Conventional manu-acturing has shifed to varnishes and poly-urethane finishes that can be applied withspray techniques, whereas wax finishes

require some elbow grease and patienceto get comortable with the technique. Ingeneral, waxes must first be applied in acircular motion with an applicator pad, cloth, brush or sponge. 10 MILLION TREESNorthwoods Casket Company owner Jonas Zahn

    promises sustainability to future generations

    A CARBONNEGATIVE COMMITMENT

    By Rebecca Bentz

THE AVERAGE PERSONtakes more than600 million breaths in his or her lifetime. Those

600 million will soon be a little easier, thanks to

Jonas Zahn, who is pledging his own impres-

    sive number: 10 million trees.

Zahn is founder of Northwoods Casket

    Company, a Beaver Dam-based business

that creates sustainable caskets from locally

    sourced and environmentally friendly materi-

als. For each casket Northwoods crafts, Zahn

has pledged to plant 100 trees. That means

the company will need to craft 100,000

caskets to achieve the 10 million tree mark.

This is no lofty aspiration; for Zahn, it is avery real, personal mission.

Our commitment to plant 10 million trees

is much more than a goal. It is a commit-

ment, a promise. It is a promise I have made

to my children and the state of Wisconsin,

he explains. I have every bit of confidence

    that we will achieve this.

His pledge echoes through his and

his companys actions: Zahn is drafting a

memorandum of understanding in relationto his tree-planting goal that he will share

with the Wisconsin Department of Natural

    Resources and the state legislature.

All 10 million trees will be planted in

    accordance with the Wisconsin Department

of Natural Resources Urban Forestry initia-

tive. (An urban forest is all of the trees and

other vegetation in and around a commu-

nity essentially, the plant life found in the

locations where the majority of Wiscon-

sins population lives, works and makes its

    carbon footprint.) This means Northwoods

isnt seeding row upon row of plantationpines; its working to replenish the specific

native tree species the state DNR has iden-

tified as needed to create a diverse tree

population. Diversified forests mean less of

a chance that large numbers of trees will die

    from unexpected diseases and pests.

These efforts are already being recog-

nized. Last year, Zahn and Northwoods Casket

Company received an Innovations in Urban

    FAST FOREST FACTS

Wisconsin is home to 85 native

    tree species.

The state boasts 184 Tree Cities

    USA; thats the third-highest

    ranking in the nation!

Did you know that the trees fou

in your town or community can

    provide economic benefits? The

    Wisconsin DNR estimates that

    well-managed urban forests

pay back nearly three times the

cost to plant and maintain them

    The benefits include improved

    air quality, increased real estate

    values, water runoff mitigation

    and energy savings.

    Wisconsins urban areas (towns

    cities and other communities)

    contain an estimated 27 million

    trees.

Forestry award from the DNR, which lauded

the creation of Zahns unique tree-planting and

    reforestation project.

THE ROOTSZahn hasnt always been in the casket-crafting

business. He studied civil and environmental

engineering in college and afterward became

what he characterizes as a serial entrepre-

neur. He worked in high-tech startup compa-

nies for the past 20 years, including onerecently acquired by IBM.

Zahn eventually craved a new direction in

his career one outside of high-tech, one

not focused on technology. He chose casket-

making specifically for this reason, as well as

the challenge of breaking into the surprisingly

    monopoly-dominated industry.

While the careful craftsmanship of North-

woods caskets is dear to Zahn, the green

and sustainable messaging [and] building a

    social entrepreneurial-focused company is

something thats a personal passion of mine.

It brings me great joy to write out paychecksto people who really are committed to what

we do and how we do it. We dont have to

build this business on the backs of labor, he

explains. Im doing this to prove that we can

build a sustainable business: one that isnt

focused on profits, but focused on creating

good work for good people here in Wiscon-

sin and doing something right by the envi-

ronment. We can do that and make money.

Zahn explains that as a craft business

    rather than a manufacturer, Northwoods

Casket Company is able to keep sustain-

ability and eco-friendliness at the core of

its business. Rather than mass production,

Northwoods focus is always on quality and

    environmental stewardship.

A BLOSSOMING MISSIONI get teased, mostly by my dad, that were a

tree-planting company and we craft caskets to

fund such operations which is partially true.

Zahn is on a mission to leave the earth

better than when he arrived. For him,

    carbon-neutral isnt good enough: He

aspired to make Northwoods a carbon-

    negative company meaning the business

removes more carbon dioxide from the plan-

    ets atmosphere than it adds.

Zahns already able to cross this goal offhis to-do list.

We are a truly carbon-negative company

probably by a factor of 10x already. And

we are a profitable company, and we are

    growing, he says.

The 100 tree seedlings planted per ca

    offset Northwoods carbon footprint in

one year. And those trees continue to

for many years after that, Zahn explains

Zahn and the other individuals who

    up Northwoods Casket Company are

living and breathing their passion for lo

    grown sustainability and environmenta

your journey in this life can have a definiteimpact on the environment.

The construction of a typical steel casket

    adds approximately 2,000 pounds of

carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Hard-

wood casket construction is a little better,

at 1,600-1,700 pounds. That equates to

approximately six to 10 days of the average

    family households carbon footprint, North-

woods Casket Company owner Jonas Zahn

    explains.

    Zahns company crafts affordable,

    sustainable burial caskets for individuals

who want to make one of their final deci-sions in life an environmentally-conscious

one. Depending on the product, crafting a

Northwoods casket adds 50 to 200 pounds

of carbon dioxide to the air a tenth the

    typical amount.

Very, very important to me and core to

    our business is sustainability, eco-friendli-

ness [and] nontoxic products. So, green

in every way that you can measure: from

local sourcing of woods to air drying our

woods. All of our finishes are 100 percentnontoxic, 100 percent [volatile organic

    compound]-free.

    Northwoods 30 different products are

actively represented in a third of Wiscon-

sins 600 funeral homes; however, indi-

viduals may request a Northwoods casket

through any funeral home in the state and

receive it with same- or next-day shipping.

The company also sells through funeral

homes in some neighboring states and

    through third-party carriers to far-flung

    corners of the country.

The company offers many styles in awide range of prices, with something for

    every family. Northwoods crafted caskets

are suitable for burial or cremation and can

    even be customized.

But perhaps the best part of purchasing a

Northwoods Casket is knowing that youve

    made an environmentally conscious deci-

sion and have left 100 Wisconsin trees as

    part of your legacy.
