NATIONAL PRESIDENT CINDA BROCKMAN, CPPM, CF

This year’s NES was held July 31-August 3, 2017, and was very rewarding to me as my first year as President of NPMA was ending. During those four days, I enjoyed a rich opportunity to share my ideas and experiences with property professionals from all over.

The seminar brought together nearly 600 professionals from three countries to share their experiences, to learn from one another and to engage in conversations about asset/property management. The 2017 NES was structured around 11 track sessions with 106 small, facilitated educational workshops and 18 Mastermind sessions offered by our profession's experts and leaders. I especially enjoyed the workshops given by new members. It is not easy presenting in front of an audience but the topics were of interest and the classes were well attended.

The conference is of key importance for new members and all first-time attendees at NES receive an introduction to a growing network of professionals working in asset/property management. I especially enjoyed the ice breaker that the new attendees could participate in during the new member orientation. It gave me the opportunity to meet the new attendees and for them to meet with Consulting Fellows and other new attendees. The interactive Ice Breaker activity facilitated by Ivonne Bachar, VP of Membership, was fun and helped the new attendees to get to know each other.

This year’s NES speakers for the keynote and general session were outstanding. Our keynote speaker, Scott Greenberg, gave an exceptional motivational presentation. Scott wrapped his program around the needs of our group and NES. His presentation was very entertaining and informational. He energized me and all who attended the opening ceremony. The feedback I heard was that he was phenomenal! The attendees were blown away and gave Mr. Greenberg a standing ovation!

During the general session on Wednesday, our speaker was Patrick Sweeney, whose presentation was on “The Surprising Power of Fear.” He explained to us that the most powerful force in our life, yet the least understood is fear. Again, the members enjoyed Mr. Sweeney’s session and gave him a standing ovation!

In addition to networking and professional development opportunities, Tuesday, August 1, was the Awards Ceremony. These awards highlighted achievement, dedication and commitment to the NPMA and the property profession. Congratulations to all the award recipients! Thank you for your contribution to NPMA and the property profession.

The NPMA Foundation Administrator, Pat Jacklets, and Assistant Foundation Administrator, Cheri Cross, did an outstanding job at NES bringing in over $25,000. The money raised will assist more members with grant funds to attend courses, workshops and seminars at the chapter, regional or national levels of NPMA. Kudos to Pat and Cheri!!!

Feedback from the conference was very positive – participants greatly enjoyed the chance to meet like-minded people from so many chapters, the opportunity to network and to learn from one another, and the chance to explore new ideas. The next NES, to be held August 2018 in Chicago, is now eagerly awaited.

Looking back at NES now, it is impossible to summarize the rich ideas that were shared over the four days. The most important one is the recognition that NES is about people and that we all need to take responsibility to keep in touch and share ideas with colleagues. Additionally, we all need to step up and volunteer our services to NPMA. For without the volunteers, there would not have been a NES!

I would also like to thank everyone who attended for giving so freely of themselves and making this year’s NES a memorable and successful occasion. NES provided the opportunity for everyone to learn, grow and network with fellow professionals.

Participants greatly enjoyed the chance to meet like-minded people from so many chapters, the opportunity to network and to learn from one another, and the chance to explore new ideas."

CHANGES TO CPPA CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

On August 1, 2017, NPMA will begin selling the updated Intermediate Studies Manual (Copyright 2007 – 2015) and issuing the corresponding CPPA Module 3 and Module 4 Exams.

Those who have already begun the CPPA program using the current study material (Copyright 2007) and purchased the exams prior to July 31,2017, but have not yet taken them, will be able to do so until their exam expiration date or until November 1, 2017, whichever comes first.

In the past, NPMA published five different versions of the CPPA Module 4 exam that corresponded with the Supplement Manuals. The new exams will no longer have the various versions and the Supplement Manuals will no longer be a part of the CPPA Certification Program. There will be only one version of the CPPA Module 4 Exam.

For more information, please visit the CPPA page under the Certification tab at www.npma.org.

ACHIEVEMENTAWARD

Jack E. Griffi ths PROPERTY PERSONOF THE YEAR

AL GREEN, CPPM, CF

Over the span of 30 years, Frank Borrelli has worked as an Asset Management professional. He began his career at Gallo Wine and is now the Director of Support Services for California State University, Stanislaus. Frank with the encouragement and help of his mentor Andy Anderson, was able to achieve the goal of accomplishing his CPPS, CPPA and CPPM. He most recently accepted the responsibility of being an instructor for NPMA. Now he proctors exams for people who have the desire to advance themselves to be a property management professional through certifi cation. Frank has volunteered, designed and presented several in-service workshops and presentations for NPMA and CSU Stanislaus. He has held offi ce of Parliamentarian, Sargent of Arms through the Bay Area Chapter of NPMA. He worked as a consultant for UC Merced and E&J Gallo Winery. He helped develop the new California College and University Chapter for NPMA. He has served as a mentor for younger property professionals who will someday move to leadership roles. These accomplishments and leadership qualities that Frank has demonstrated were part of Andy’s vision to develop people he mentored into property management professionals.

When I fi rst met Frank at the 2012 NPMA Fall Education Conference, I heard a lot of talk about Andy Anderson. He spoke of Andy’s professionalism and his commitment to NPMA. Andy told Frank that he was going to share his knowledge so he can be a property management professional. Frank then needed to share his knowledge with others. Frank truly did fulfi ll the request. Now Frank is passing his knowledge received from Andy down to me and many others. I have received my CPPS and will soon take the exam for the CPPA. It is Frank’s continued motivation, encouragement and support that is helping me to become a better property management professional.

Since Frank will be retiring soon, I feel this is the right time for him to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Andy has left a wonderful impression and provided great skill to Frank. Frank Borrelli is the person who had the privilege of learning and living with the knowledge of Andy.

Frank has demonstrated the qualities of Andy’s words. Frank has infl uenced me and others to develop and be the best property management professionals possible. From what I am told, this is Andy’s vision and his vision is bigger than life. Like Andy, Frank is loved by everyone. He is knowledgeable and when he walks into a room everyone either knows him or will know him soon since Frank is eager to meet new people.
