Non-contact Force Microscopy image of a NaCl(001) island taken in UHV. The island consists of about 150 molecules and was produced by “uncontrolled“ manipulation of a NaCl-film on a Cu(111) surface. This island reveals one of the worlds smallest Switzerland.(University of Basel)

TOP NANO 21”Nanostructures for Optical Devices and Elements”

Typical layerthicknesses20-100 nm

Typical linewidths50-150 nm

Optical nanostructures with line widths in the order of or less than 100 nm, and aspect ratios (linewidth / depth) of up to 1:1. Examples of application areas include anti-reflection surfaces, grating polarisersand resonant filters for application at uvand visible wavelengths.

Layer materials, thicknesses and nanostructuring are application specific

A four layer structure repeated two times gives a nice flat-top resonance effect. The grating period is 716 nm.

Subwavelength grating grid polariser fabricated by the slope evaporation of metal onto a replicated grating nano-structure.

Smoke detector unit: Potential application of nano-structured polariser to improve sensitivity of detector.

Anti-reflection surface - applicationof grating nanostructure to reduce the reflectivity of an optical surface.

TOP NANO 21Non-wetting surface coatings for precision optics

The perfluorosilanisation of smooth glass or other mainly SiO2 containing substrate surfaces results in surfaces with lowest wettability by liquids (twice lower than Teflon™) without optical losses.

The main advantage of the coatings is the strongly reduced contamination of precision optics. Cleaning efforts of optical elements is strongly reduced.

High Performance Nanocrystalline Photovoltaics for Indoor Applications

This innovative photovoltaic devicewith enhanced sensitivity at low light levels uses an electroactive dye to absorb light and deliver electricity; the dye is adsorbed on a semiconductor in contact with an electrolyte, in contrast with conventional all-solid-state devices

Electrochemical photovoltaic devices maintain their conversion efficiency under low light conditions indoors where conventional solid state cells perform poorly.

DHM, a new instrument for cell characterisation and imaging at the nanometric scale by digital holographic microscopy

Thickness resolution of approximately 40 nanometers and a transverse resolution of 360 nm have been obtained for living cells in cultures.

DHM offers diverse and important applications in medicine and biology: diagnosis based on the non perturbing observation of living tissues and cells, and functional image of cells in culture for drug screening in pharmaceutical industry.
