Space to VillageA NASA-USAID partnership to improve environmental management and

resilience to climate change by strengthening the capacity of governments and other key stakeholders to integrate earth observation information and

geospatial technologies into development decision-makingUSAID: renewed focus on

integrating science, technology, & innovation into development to solve today’s most pressing development challenges around the globe.

NASA Sub-Goal 3A:Study Earth from space to advance

Frost Monitoring and Early Detection

• In Kenya, as with many other countries in Africa, frost damages are a significant threat, causing millions of dollars in damage to crops including tea and coffee.

• Advanced knowledge of potential frost areas is critical to reduce these damages.

• Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) requested SERVIR’s help with identifying (1) areas of potential frost within Kenyan agricultural regions and (2) areas with crops damaged by frost.

• Using NASA and KMD datasets, SERVIR-Africa has put together a system for early detection and warning of frost and to assess damaged areas.

• The system is currently being tested by the end users in Kenya and there is significant interest in this product for additional countries in Africa.

• In 2009, SERVIR Mesoamerica used MODIS fire hotspots to generate Guatemala Fire Monitoring System.

• Recently, SERVIR HKH developed SMS Forest Fire Detection and Monitoring System in Nepal.

• Over 200 Forest Officers in Nepal are receiving real-time information about current fires in their district.

• In near future, the system will be transferred over to Nepal Ministry of Forest for their continued operational use.
