Rotary Club of Kampala | Club 17287 | Vol 9 Issue 07 | Thursday 15th August 2019
Greetings to everyone!
We are already in the middle of the Membership and Development month, and halfway through the second month of this Rotary year! We all wonder – How time flies! Yes, we look at how many boxes we have ticked off the activity calendar so far.
Do we pat ourselves on the back, or are we pointing fingers? Has our membership to the Club brought any impact to the Club, to the communities around us or even to ourselves? We can even turn this question the other way round - How has the Club impacted you as a member? This is the time we should be taking the membership satisfaction survey, to give feedback to the Club how we are doing, in attracting, engaging and retaining members. The Rotary International website (www.rotary.org ) has resourceful Learning & Reference Centre where we can refresh ourselves on how to make meaning of our membership to the Club and to Rotary, moreover enjoying every moment of it without feeling ‘bogged down’.
Do you pride yourself in being a member of a Club with 20 Past Presidents, and all of them still active members of the Club? The RC Kampala has 20 Past Presidents as part of its current membership of 83 + 1 Corporate Member! How have we leveraged on this rich membership resource of the Club, and what can we learn from them?

President’s Message
Let us live the ‘Object of Rotary’ as the Guiding Principle of our membership to the Club and basis of our relationships with each other.
“To encourage and foster: 1) The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; and 2) The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society.”
Your active membership matters a lot.
I wish a wonderful week of valuable connections.

Is Universal Basic Income Good for Business?
The essence of this policy is that by offering an income to all citizens, this circulates cash in the economy which drives business value, since most citizens will likely spend this money on goods and
services in the economy. There have, however, been strong arguments against offering this form of welfare, as the Poor Laws suggest, since it led
to increased unemployment however this was because of its administration and centralized
control of the program.

Three WomenBy: Lisa Taddeo
For her debut book, Three Women, Lisa Taddeo listened to her subjects’ stories over a period of eight years. She recorded their histories of sex, love, loss, abuse. The book’s brilliance is in making new the very oldest universal experiences: falling in love for the first time, mourning the end of a marriage, how wanting the one you can’t have will almost kill you. Three Women is a reminder, or perhaps a warning: desire is a thing you can question, deny, chase—but rarely catch.

Rotary International
August is Membership & New Club Development Month
Impact starts with our members — people like you who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in
ourselves.
At club meetings in communities across the globe, our people of action come together to strengthen their connections to friends and neighbors and their commitment to improving lives.
Who can join?• We’re looking for people who want to give back to
their communities.• Rotary clubs also welcome Rotaractors, Rotary Peace
Fellows, and other members of the family of Rotary who qualify for membership.
How can I become a member?Clubs accept new members by invitation. To help us find the right club for you, we’ll ask you a few questions about yourself and your interests. Then we’ll share your answers with Rotary leaders in your community who will match you with a club.
What are the benefits?Becoming a Rotary member connects you with a diverse group of professionals who share your drive to give back. Through regular meetings and events, you’ll:
• Discuss your community’s needs and develop creative ways to meet them
• Connect with other leaders who are changing the world
• Expand your leadership and professional skills• Catch up with good friends and meet new ones
Membership Director 2019-2020Jacqueline Ayuya
Other benefits of membership include:
• Rotary Global Rewards, our member benefits program, which offers discounts on products and services. It’s Rotary’s way of helping our members spend less so they can do more.
• The Rotary International Convention is our biggest event of the year. Rotary members from more than 130 countries meet at the convention each year to celebrate our successes and make plans for the future.
• Rotary Fellowships give members the chance to join a group of people who share similar interests, hobbies, or vocations. Some groups use their fellowship to make a positive difference.
• Rotarian Action Groups unite Rotary members, family members, program participants and alumni who share their expertise in particular fields by collaborating with clubs and districts on projects.

Guest Speaker
Editors Note
I have made a personal effort to get to know Rotary a bit more in Uganda. I will be visiting 2-3 other Clubs during the week to see how fellowship is run and to get to know more Rotarians. I encourage you to join me if you like.
Last week I attended the Rotary Club of Namugongo fellowship. The guest speaker is a Polio survivor who has many accomplishments and has overcome countless hurdles to reach his current position as a career diplomat. He also runs an organization called Make 12.4% Work which sponsors internship placements for graduates with disabilities. I was amazed at his story and his efforts to support others like himself.
I also thought their fellowship was made fun by some small efforts instituted by the Club. They have a “Shrine” moment where all members and guests get up and greet each other, find out where they are from and what they are doing – all in about 2-3 minutes. It was a good for the flow of the meeting and gave some energy to the meeting. I liked it.
Separately, I have been having discussions on values and Rotary, and if Rotary actually purports any value system. Although I have not found the answer to this yet, I continue to explore the question. One thing I found was the below excerpt from the Membership page of Rotary International:
What’s expected of me?
As a club member, you will be asked to:
1. Pay club dues, 2. Attend meetings and events, and 3. Use your professional skills and talents to make
a difference.
