Key Concepts of Kinder
Dual Language Instruction
Teachers change by language to provide a language model and association of one person to one language.
Content is taught through the language
Teachers use techniques to help students gain understanding of the topic:● Gestures and facial expressions● Visuals, pictures, objects, book illustrations, etc… ● Cognates- words that sound similar in both languages● Intentional groupings of students so that they can help each other● On-line the teacher may ask a student to restate the response in the partner
language or rephrase the idea in simpler terms● Encouraging students to draw their understanding● Allowing students to answer in their native language - they understood the
instruction!!! ● Teacher will then rephrase the student’s response in the target language● Celebrating advances in comprehension and production● Previewing/reviewing general concepts or ideas taught in the partner language● Intentionally teaching language learning skills - how to be a language detective!

What ARC is Doing to Support Students and Families➔ Morning Preview
◆ The Science teacher/English model will start off the day and give an overview of the big ideas coming up
➔ Afternoon Review◆ The first 15 minutes of Teacher Office Hours are dedicated to the
English dominant students and their parents to share what they gleaned during the day and celebrate understanding, use of language detective skills, comprehension and early production of the new languages
What ARC is Doing to Support Students and Families➔ Weekly Parent Letters
◆ Letters will review the concepts being taught during the week so that parents can review them with their child helping to access background information and help the student follow the class
➔ Providing instructions in both English and Spanish for off-line activities.
➔ Helping to Connect Parent Partners◆ Connect with a family - help them and their child with the
English portion of school and they will support you and your child with the Spanish portion --
It really does take a village!
Developing Near Equal ACADEMIC Abilities in Another Language is a Long-term Commitment
➔ Research shows that developing academic parity in another language takes 4-7 years and both languages continue to develop for a lifetime
➔ Some of the most important skills to be an effective language learner include:◆ Being a language detective and making intelligent guesses using clues, cues, and
background knowledge to determine what is going on;◆ Being a risk taker - it’s okay to try something new, to make a guess, and even to
be wrong;◆ Being persistent and having a positive, can-do attitude about languages;◆ Having a community of support to learn with and learn from who believe that you
will learn the new languages!
Developing Near Equal ACADEMIC Abilities in Another Language is a Long-term Commitment
➔ We can do it together! The first ARC students graduated from high school fully bi-literate in 2005 and more have graduated every year since!◆ Children of ARC graduates are now ARC
students!◆ ARC graduates are successful members of
society serving in every profession imaginable -- some are even teaching for YISD and even ARC!
We are here for you!
