FROM THE PRINCIPAL…………………………………………………….……………Melissa Nelson

Kia ora parents and caregivers I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break with your friends and family. The weather was kind to us and it was a great opportunity to recharge our batteries as we head into the final two weeks of term one. A reminder about our Community Evening, next Wednesday 14th April, in the Mount Maunganui College hall. Please come along to hear from Alistair and myself about our current context and to gain more insight into how you can support your children and young people to be safe online. I look forward to seeing a great turn out from our community on Wednesday. This week, it has been great to see our students keeping busy at break times. There have been ultimate frisbee class competitions, as well as lots of activity on our astro turf, exercise circuit and basketball hoops. The library is always well used at break times and hand ball continues to be the popular choice for many. We encourage the children to keep busy at break times. Being active during the day helps to focus on learning during class time. Congratulations to our Surf Team (pictured right) who won the surf competition last week. Our children really are very lucky with the number of opportunities that come their way. Enjoy your short school week everyone. Ma te wa Whaea Melissa

INTRODUCING OUR COUNSELLOR – BEN BURGGRAAF

Kia ora. My name is Ben Burggraaf and I was born and raised in Mount Maunganui. As a former student, Mount Maunganui Intermediate holds a special place in my heart and it is fantastic to be back here as a counsellor, one day a week. As a counsellor, I believe it is important to provide support and help to any students facing challenges and difficulties in their lives. My hope is to support the well-being and mental health of the youth in our community, because they are our future. Outside of work I love surfing, the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. Ngā mihi, Ben

EPRO8 CHALLENGE SUCCESS Congratulations to the students who competed last night in the first heats of the EPro8 Challenge. All students displayed excellent teamwork and resilience throughout the 3 hour competition. Our Engineering Ocelots finished in first place. Albert’s and AI’s finished third equal and had to have a very intense 3 minute challenge at the end. Engineering Ocelots and AI’s will now go through to the semi finals, in May. We still have 4 teams competing, over two nights next week at Tauranga Intermediate. Check out the movie to see what it is all about. ** Please note these dates are as at 17 February 2021 Donations Scheme – We have again opted into the School Donation Scheme in 2021. This

means that the government will contribute $150 per child to our school operations grant, based upon the 2020 July roll return. We have opted into the government scheme, in good faith, in order to reduce the burden on families. Prior to 2020, we asked families for a school donation, specialist fees and fees for day trips and education outside the classroom (camps). The majority of camps were cancelled in 2020, due to Covid-19. We cannot ask for any fees related to curriculum, with one exception. We can ask families to make a voluntary donation towards the cost of camp. We believe that EOTC/School Camps is a very important part of the curriculum for emerging adolescents. The voluntary camp donation for all students in 2021 is $125.00. All children will attend school camp, regardless of whether camp fee donation is paid or not, however, we are sincerely hoping that as many families will make the voluntary camp donation in 2021. We may not be able to sustain the EOTC/School Camp programme if we do not receive your support, in order to cover costs.

SUPER 11 SURFING - MMI CHAMPIONS

MMI Green - 1st MMI Black - 2nd Whakatane -3rd

Having had this event postponed from the Tsunami warning earlier in the term, it was pleasing to have a fine day for MMI to host 6 other schools, at Tay Street, last Thursday. Both MMI teams got through their heats to the finals and both teams were then against Whakatane teams. It was great to see our surfing talent show their skills in winning 1st and 2nd place with our green team just ahead of our black team, on the final count back. MMI green placed 1st with MMI placing 2nd. Well done! GREEN TEAM BLACK TEAM Kate Mitchell Maddie Tod Remy Sale Lennox Holdaway Finn Crawford Eli Beer Zen Mouldey Vitor Komkemper
