FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Today brings another busy term to an end - one that has seen many successes and much learning. Thank you to the families who came to learning conferences this week. All staff that I have talked with said that they enjoyed the opportunity to talk with families and that there were many positive conversations. With half of the year remaining there is plenty of opportunity for the students to work towards achieving their learning goals. I would like to congratulate everyone on another positive term, behaviour wise. Our Coastal Values of Learner, Pride and Respect are consistently demonstrated by over 95% of our students. Thank you to everyone who has supported the school, in any way, this term. We cannot provide many of the “extras” without this community support. Please know that your help is appreciated. We welcome Ms Morresey back for the beginning of next term, following her well-deserved sabbatical. I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday. Beryl Harvey Acting Principal

Indian Dance Advisor Wanted

Some basic Indian dance knowledge would be helpful. We are creating an aerobic routine based around the movie 'Slum Dog Millionaire' and would appreciate advice on culturally appropriate movement. Advice would only be needed on occasion. Please email [email protected].

SUSTAINABLE ART CHALLENGE 2017

The Sustainable Art Challenge promotes awareness of environmental issues through art. This event was held on Sunday 2 July at Baycourt. Entries were judged on a combination of Sustainability, Innovation, Creativity, Wearability, Stage Impact, and Functionality. We had 15 entries in the Trash to Fash section and 3 entries in the upcycled junk section. This was a fantastic event and the creativity from all our students was amazing. We are proud to announce the prizes that were presented to our students. Also, read the full sunlive article here: http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/157595-all-that-glitters-istrash.html

ELITE ROCK CLIMBING On Friday 23rd June, 9 MMI students travelled down to Taupo to compete in the BOP/Poverty Bay Intermediate Rock Climbing competition. The students started off with 4 walls, 2 for girls, and 2 for boys. There were certain colours that they had to follow up the wall and they were numbered from bottom to top. 2 of our students, Olivia Way (year 7 girl), and Reed Tong (year 7 boy), made it to the finals. Both did well on very difficult climbs, to just miss out on the top 3. Thank you to Carla Blockley, from Rocktopia, who allowed us to use their climbing wall before the competition. Well done to the following students who represented our school so well. Mia Thompson, Mia Fletcher, Kalea Earles, Max Way, Cole Blockley, Reed Tong, Cam Ford, Arlo Cullwick and Olivia Way.

WORLD CUP BASKETBALL The MMI AIMS Games, Boys Basketball team finished 3rd out of 16 teams. Thanks goes to Leanne Hall for her excellent coaching skills. Congratulations to 2 of the MMI team members who were named in the Tournament Team – Oliver Taylor and Seth Whinney. It was a fun day with great bonding, as the team prepares for the challenge of the AIMS Games, next term.

SPORTS CAMP 2017 Congratulations to our Sports Camp team who came 3rd at last week’s Totara Springs Sports Camp. This year we went to a far more competitive camp, with much larger schools attending. We competed against teams from Papamoa College, Peachgrove Intermediate, Berkley Intermediate (both Waikato), Northcross Intermediate, Buckland’s Beach Intermediate, and Glen Eden Intermediate (all Auckland). We started the week well, with Gus Shivnan and Lucy Bartlett, 1st boy and girl home in the cross country and our team dominating this event. Our 6 swimmers did a great job, to also take out the swimming on day 1. Our teams competed well throughout a very tiring week. We made numerous semi-finals and finals and won trophies in Swimming, Cross Country, Darts, Frisbee Golf, Boys Indoor Soccer, Quality Living and Scramball. A huge thank you to Colm Kenny and Ana Sheerin, who helped the team throughout the week. Thank you, also, to all those who travelled over the Kamais, to support us throughout the week. Thank you to all those who provided transportation to and from Totara Springs. Well done to the following athletes who represented our school so well throughout the week; Jai Knight, Ezekiel Stuart, Gus Shivnan, Jed Davis, Xavier Morrison, Reed Tong, Tay Ririnui, Kameo Wagner, Gene Baggott, Matt Anderson, Connor MacDonald, Fergus Roberts, Alex Padfield, Nathan Rostron, Michael Kennedy, Ethan Millington, Jacob Hall, Josh Robb, Maya Carr-Manoit, Maiya Holliday, Mya Bennett, Devon Smith, Lucy Bartlett, Poppy Wilson, Anna Brock, Keilani Tipora-Horne, Lahkaia Reriti, Lily Rall, Stella Herrick and Olivia Hala (pictured below).
