BADMINTON The MMI Badminton team may have been short on medals but certainly not short on pride and respect! Everyone developed so much over the course of their AIMS competition with many excellent moments of play. Our MMI team showed a great team spirit being supportive of each other on and off the court. New friends were made and hopefully, for the majority of our students who were brand new to badminton this year, they have found a new sport they will be able to carry on in the years to come. David was our AIMS player of the tournament due to his relentless positivity and unwavering support of his teammates. Some of the highlights for our team were Emily and Luca making it to the semis for their division (both placed 3rd equal) and Isaac qualifying in the 2nd division. A beautiful moment also came in Isaac’s division 2 game, where he was presented with a Taonga from his opponent from the Cook Islands”, Stephano Vakatini. To quote Isaac’s mum:

Isaac was delighted to receive this taonga from his opponent as a token of respect and kindness. I really believe this epitomises the spirit of the AIMS games and felt that this moment could be shared and celebrated as such.

What a special moment it was to witness. I think I even shed a tear.”

Alison Goldie A big thank you to the parents that came to support our students and those that were able to help with last-minute transport. I also have to give a special mention to Tarryn Espitalier, our coach from BOP badminton, for giving us so much of her time, on and off the court and to Delwyn Cooper who ran such an excellent competition and who does such an excellent, positive, job in supporting the development of badminton across the Bay and NZ.

CROSS COUNTRY We had a hugely successful campaign at the Aims Games Cross Country this year. We had 3 out of four teams medal in the 3 person Team Race. Our Year 7 girls top 3 Mackenzie Bryant, Asha James and Hannah Parkinson placed 1st. The Year 8 boys Sean Collins, Adisen Mahy and Macka Wagstaff placed 1st. Our Year 7 boys Harry Anderson, Samuel Coley and Joshua Innes placed 2nd. We also had a team of 8 entered into the Championship relay 12 km race. Each runner ran either 1 or 2 laps of 1km each, totalling 12 km. These runners were so supportive and encouraging of each other. They competed hard and finished with a 3rd place medal. Well done to Mackenzie Bryant, Asha James, Alana Eru, Sean Collins, Adisen Mahy, Harry Anderson, Joshua Innes and Macka Wagstaff. We also awarded a fairplay medal to Macka Wagstaff for his support and encouragement of all members of the team and for his kind words of support which was shared with me by another member of his team. Well done Macka!

TABLE TENNIS

All team members represented the school well, as well as improving their skills as more games were played. Results from team events: Boys team 1 - (Jack Danby, Max Wilson and Juwon Yoo) winners of the plate Boys team 2 - (Michael Kawana, Francis Burgess and Kayde Stackhouse) winners of the consolation round Boys team 3 - (Trent Brickley, Jaxson Carruthers and Ryan Te Wheoro) winners of the bowl Jack Danby also won the plate round in the boys’ singles. Girls doubles - Caitlin Harrison and Nikita Leslie made the semi-finals in the plate. Caitlin also made the final of the Plate round. Although no medals were won, all the team members played exceptionally well.

GIRLS FOOTBALL - GOLD MEDALISTS Over the course of the week we played 10 games, winning 9 and drawing 1. We scored an impressive 46 goals and conceded just 4. Our performances were consistently of a high standard and featured a combination of individual skill, coordinated team play and hard work to produce results. Since the beginning of the tournament I was getting positive comments about the girls. These came from opposition coaches and parents, match officials, WaiBOP observers, the NZF Fit4Football guys and others I didn’t even know. The praise was for the way the girls played and behaved, on and off the pitch. The latter is really pleasing. To win AIMS Games Gold in any sport is an achievement and the girls should be extremely proud of taking out a tournament featuring many strong teams from bigger and better-resourced schools. It really is an achievement to celebrate.

BOYS FOOTBALL

Last week I had the pleasure of managing a team of 14 awesome boys for Aims Football, what an amazing experience for everyone involved! The boys were hard-working, focused and well-mannered throughout the entire week. They were humble when they won and gracious when they lost. I even had referees commenting on what a lovely and respectful team of boys they were to ref, which at such a big tournament and with so many games over the course of the week, is a real testament to them and their coaches. Over the week the team played 11 games, they won 8 and lost 3. On two out of the five days we had 3 games (40 minutes per game)! In total the boys scored 39 goals between them and only conceded 13. We finished up an impressive 10th out of 56 teams coming second in the plate final, with the overall winner of the tournament Northcross, taking us out in a very well fought and close game in the round of 16.

I would like to make special thanks to our awesome coaches Ella Golding and Todd; you guys were so committed to the team, both prior to the tournament and then for the week of Aims – I know you were very proud of how the boys finished up. You made my job super easy with your awesome communication and organisation. We all loved watching you coach and getting to know you both and I hope you’ll both come back and coach next year!!

Thanks also to our fantastic parent, grandparent, sibling, teacher and friend supporters. You guys were awesome and I know it meant a lot to the team having your there. Lastly, thanks so much to the boys. Over the course of the week (we were out at Gordon Spratt ALL day, for 5 days, often in the wind and rain) there was not one issue with behaviour. It was a truly awesome week, both on and off the pitch, for all involved. Nat Fleming Manager

GYMNASTICS This year, 17 girls competed at AIMS Games in a range of gymnastic divisions that spread across 4 days. Due to a rapidly growing baby bump, Mrs Mel Morgan was not able to accompany the girls to AIMS, but the girls still performed well and demonstrated, not only their ability to deliver without their coach, but exceed our school coastal values of respect and pride. In Artistic Gymnastics, Reece Cobb competed as an Open Senior in artistic gymnastics, and came away with 1st place in floor, bar and beam and 3rd place in vault. Overall, she took out the AIMS games gold medal for her division. 8 gymnasts competed as twisters in artisitic gymnastics, and although no medals were secured, Neeve Lourie and Trinity Hyatt placed in the top 30 of 115 gymnasts. Keely Schoonderwoerd placed 5th in the Womens Open Novice Tumbling and Kyra O’Dwyer placed 4th in Rhythmic Gymnastics Open Junior Advanced. Overall, the girls showed resilience, they supported each other and were able to participate and enjoy the spirit of AIMS games!

CANOE SPORT Ariana Walker, who was our only competitor in this competition, headed up the Kaimais to McLaren’s Fall Park which her father, Mike Walker, who competed for NZ, as a kayaker. Ariana had a great day winning 3 bronze medals in the sprint canoe sport sprint events, 100m, 200, 500m races. Well done, you are a superstar.

MULTI SPORT It was a great day at McLarens Falls, the weather was perfect. The kids were awesome, they represented the school very well and supported each other. It was great to see the boys hockey team adding to the sea of green supporters for the first part of the day too. Standout individual performance has to go to Taine Roy who came in 6th, his MTB time was the fastest from the whole team. Next place was Isaac Crockford in 21st, Mackenzie Ewing 53rd, Jackson Tweedie 56th and Max Kelly 58th. Overall year 7 boys got 5th place with the combined scores of the top 2 placing. Rosa Kelly, our only girl, came 35th with a big smile on her face throughout. Year 8 boys did well, Macka Wagstaff had a blistering run time and was 4th out of the transition but a tough bike and kayak leg saw him finish 33rd but he had the fastest run time of our whole team and was

close to the fastest run time on the course. Zac Cairns came 41st. Marlowe Orr came 43rd after a big crash on the bike that we were all relieved that he jumped up from and managed to finish. The relay team of Macka, Isaac and Rosa did a great job and finished 15th.

TENNIS The week started with some bad weather and wet courts, but by Wednesday the sun was out and play was well underway! Nikau Going and Sam Coley both played boys singles, and Lucy Goodwin played in the girls singles. All players did very well in a very competitive draw. Lucy beating several players above her ranking and placing 31st overall. Nikau and Sam played in the boys doubles and gave it their best, but were unfortunately knocked out by a local team. Luke Blow was also in the team and provided support and encouragement throughout the week. Overall, great participation and excellent sportsmanship from all players - well done team!

ROCK CLIMBING

Fantastic, challenging and BIG week for our MMI rock climbers! They all pushed themselves outside their comfort zones in an intense environment. While tackling tricky top rope climbs, insane boulder blocks, and pushing speed limits they remained positive and put in 100% effort. They constantly supported and encouraged each other. A great team!

INDOOR BOWLS What an amazing week for the Indoor Bowlers. The 22 students, who were part of the team, did us proud in the way they behaved, the way they supported each other and their demonstration of sportsmanship. In the singles tournament we had 8 players go through to the qualifying round, with Finn Simpson going through to the top 16 and Hunter Reid going on to be in the top 8 of the 274 individuals who were competing. We had 5 pairs who qualified, for day two of the pairs, which meant going into the knockout rounds. Most teams were involved in some nail-biting tie breakers but congratulations to Finn Simpson and Joshua Davies, who managed to make it to the top 16, an outstanding effort. Congratulations to Bianca Cross and Lawrence James who both received a well-deserved sportsmanship medal. A huge thanks to all of the supporters who came during the week. We had awesome whanau support which really gave the students a big boost. A special thanks to Alison Cowan who has coached our team this year and who was an integral part of the organisation on the day. Her and her team of umpires and markers ensured the tournament ran smoothly for the entire week. Well done team, bring on next year!

GOLF

The boys had an amazing final round at Mt Maunganui Golf club. They picked up the Silver Medal for the teams event and Gus had an absolute blinder of a round and moved 8 spots up the table to claim Silver in the Boys 18 hole, Stableford Comp!! Very proud of them both, displaying outstanding sportsmanship over the 4 days.

SQUASH Option 1 - The MMI squash quartet, Lockie Willams, Finnley Oliver, Josh Grey and George Gillingham. Coach, Gez Oliver did an outstanding job with the team. Each individual player improved their skills over the week, learnt about tournament tactics and supported each other. For a team of 4 they were up there with the loudest cheering squad of all schools during AIMS week. Option 2 - Lockie, Josh George and Finnley did an amazing job representing the school in the AIMS squash tournament. Overall they played exceptionally well as individuals but what was outstanding was the team spirit of helping and encouraging each other to play well and to their maximum capability. What will be remembered also is Lockie is the positive person always with a smile, Josh was the supportive person always there for all games, George was the man with absolute passion for the sport and lastly Finnley was the person with compassion always coaching and encouraging his fellow team members.

Our best place boy was Finnley Oliver finishing 5th overall. Excellent work coach and boys!

AIMS BOYS BASKETBALL

A huge thank you to Vaughn Wilson (Willow/Coach), Phil Hardie (Assistant Coach), Anoshka Nelson (Manager), Shane Southby (Score Bench) and many other parents, for the amazing job they did this year training, managing and supporting courtside, to the level where we have achieved one of our best results - 6th out of around 100 teams. The boys all played magnificently and, once we got out of pool play, we had some really tough opponents and REALLY close results…..nail biting but exciting viewing. In the time I’ve been the teacher privileged enough to accompany the basketball teams to AIMS, this has been one of the most polished performances our boys have given – great moves, great passing and total team commitment. We, of course had a couple of “stars”, as individual players that were outstanding with Kahn Southby and Jeremy Frew sharing the team medal - but this TEAM were great, the way they worked together, and followed Willow’s coaching as he paced the sideline….what a positive man – always finding just the right encouraging thing to say to each boy as he came off. Outstanding effort boys! Outstanding effort coach!

HIP HOP What a day we had out at Classic Flyers for the Anchor AIMS Games Hip Hop Competition. During the day we spent our time with stage & technical rehearsals, making sure we were all set up and ready to go. Then came hours of getting hair and makeup done so all 12 of our dancers were looking swish! Prelims started at 2.30pm the first part of the event and MMI team ‘Intensity’ performed first and did absolutely amazingly! After this we received our judge’s feedback and worked on this until finals started at 7pm. Intensity was performing 23rd out of 29 schools from all over New Zealand. The show was 2 and a half hours long and there was some really tough competition! After training 5 hours a week, since term 1, and winning project competition in term 2, I am so proud to say that our MMI Hip Hop team ‘Intensity’ came away with the bronze medal! 3rd place! All the endless hours of practice and hard work were worth it. The team were 0.41 points off placing 2nd and 0.50 points off placing 1st! Like I said, it was a tough competition, but the team shone like stars out on that stage and made us all so proud. A massive thank you to Jhorjah McEwen, for her brilliant choreography, Sarah Clark, for the management of the team, and to all of our parents who got our kids to the practices and kept them healthy and happy. HOCKEY 6 A SIDE Our hockey teams had a hard start to the tournament with a tough time table of either very early or very late games, including both boys and girls teams playing out at Bethlehem College in the rain until late Monday night. The teams had a chance to test out their hard work and training, with a lot of our players being Year 7s who were able to establish confidence in their game and get some valuable experience during the AIMs tournament. Girls Team- Were a strong group of supportive girls, who showed up and gave it their best every game. They spent their days supporting MMI, while they waited for their either very late or very early games. We watched these girls develop confidence and grow as a team over the week, they ended up 9th with 2 pool losses and then 4 wins. Huge thanks to their coach Jody Sinkinon and Sam Watherson and parents who provided Transport throughout the week. NETBALL

Our netball team had a great start to the tournament with three wins. The team had a chance to test out some different combinations and establish some confidence to continue with the tournament. The wet and windy conditions during the first couple of days made it difficult to keep possession. We came out third in our first pool round which put us into B Grade. By being in the B Grade, we had some solid competition for the rest of the tournament. It was great to play teams from all over the country, we played teams as far down as Wellington to Ahipara which is a small town far North by 90 Mile Beach. The MMI team put together some great phases of play during the tournament even though the score did not always reflect this. We finished 63 out of 126 teams. A huge thank you to Hana Miller for coaching and Charlene Kitching for managing the team throughout the Netball season. Well done to our AIMS Netball Team 2019: Annik Weir, Parisha Naidu, Emilia Davis, Maya Hambling, Gabrielle Annear, Morgan Kitching, Molly Miller, Millie Rogers, Zahne Martelli-Ririnui, Maia Ormsby, Isabella Giurizatto Scott, Keana Reid-Bennett.

WATER POLO - GIRLS

An assorted bunch of year 7 and 8 girls emerged from ASB arena on Sunday. A green mass of energy and excitement, and for half of them the wonder of what they would be in for over the next 5 days. They followed the opening ceremony with a few hours of team bonding over pizza, games, laughs and fun. The girls always knew it was going to be tough, as they were up against some tough competition from those Auckland girls schools, but battle they did with their hearts and soul and when they weren’t playing they were travelling between Windermere and Bayfair with their green pom poms, face paint and loud cheer to support the boys’ water polo team, as they battled it out in the open division. Playing against the team who won the division, Antayla, our talented goalie, was awarded a sportsman medal for her amazing goal saving. The Mount girls were also in agreement that this was totally deserved so she was also awarded the team medal from her own team! Finishing up with a final win on their last day the girls placed 5th. These girls played fair, worked hard, showed awesome spirit, team unity and great support for other teams and should be proud of such a great week!

WATER POLO - OPEN What an awesome week at AIMS games - with loads of fun had by everyone in the MMI water polo open team! We had a tough start to the tournament coming up against Pasadena, the team that won silver, in our first pool round, but had some great games through the week, with 4 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses over the duration of AIMS. It was awesome to see some really great skill development within the team over the week and every single game was fun whether a win, draw or loss! Our coaches George Mano and Billy Bury gave out three awards for the AIMS games tournament: • Best defensive player of the tournament - Liam Preston • Best offensive or attacking player - Cody Henry • Star of the tournament - Baxter Moyle

GREEN TEAM The Green Team played an integral role in increasing recycling rates at the AIMS Games, with a goal of diverting 60% of the waste materials produced at the event from ending up in a landfill. The Green Team were there to educate the public about what is recyclable and what is not. Their job was to ensure that waste, recycling and organics were separated correctly. The Green Team worked incredibly hard through challenging weather to keep the surrounding areas clean by picking up endless litter. They were stationed at the netball courts, so enjoyed supporting our MMI netball team throughout the week. Well done to our MMI Green Team for your huge effort, maturity and responsibility in keeping our local environment clean and green!

RUGBY RUNNERS TEAM "The Super Eight Rugby Runners" did an outstanding job, throughout the five days, which involved running from one end of Blake Park to the other, collecting score cards and returning these to the control centre after making sure the match ball was placed ready for the next game. This was done for over 650 games, the boys worked as an excellent team and I judged them the best ever from the 9 years we have run Rugby 7s at the AIMS games. Sprags Senior (Tournament Director) Runners: Coooper Everett, George Coooney, Zac Heke, Marlowe Orr, Troy McMillan, Riley Neilson, Theo Aitken and Awatea Tamaki
