Sunday’s Collection was $9,277.00 for Aug 27th

Dear Parishioners:

So, we have a new bishop! The fifth bishop of Allen-town, His Excellency Alfred Schlert. So what is a bishop and why do we need one? Our catechism teaches us: “Christ is himself the source of ministry in the Church. He instituted the Church. He gave her authority and mission, orientation and goal: In order to shepherd the People of God and to increase its numbers without cease, Christ the Lord set up in his Church a variety of offices which aim at the good of the whole body. the holders of office, who are invested with a sacred power, are, in fact, dedicated to promoting the interests of their brethren, so that all who belong to the People of God . . . may attain to salvation. (CCC 874)” OK, now that one paragraph says a whole lot, basically it means that in instituting or founding the Church, Our Lord gives her a mission and His authority to carry out the mission. He also gives the Church a hierarchy to unite and govern all the various ministries of the Church. This keeps the Church in good order, which is needed if the mission, which is eternal salvation, is to be carried on. But more than simply keeping the Church in good order, the hierarchical nature of the Church is also how the authority of Christ is bestowed on the Church. Now, this authority, which is Christ’s own, is invested in the apostles united together with St. Peter as their head. It is this authority that gives validity to all the works and ministries within the one Church of Christ. Without this authority, the sacraments would be devoid of their sacred power, preaching and teaching would not have the authenticity of the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, and works of charity would not have the grace of union with the sacrifice of Christ. This authority no one can claim for himself nor does it arise by the consent of the community. This kind of authority can only be given by Christ and He gave it to the apostles and they in turn to their successors, the bishops, and it continues to be handed on through the sacrament of Holy Orders. So, it is necessary for the work of the apostles to continue in the Church so that the mission Christ gave the Church can be fulfilled. Being in union with our successor to the apostles means we, and all our good works, are in union with the whole Church and ultimately with Christ Himself. So, we thank the Lord for providing us a new bishop, to lead us and unite us, priests, deacons and laity, in all we do to carry on the mission of Christ in the Church of Allentown. PEACE! Fr. Adam

YOUTH HUMOR FOR THIS WEEK

A father was at the beach with his children when their four year old son ran up to him, grabbed his hand and led him to the shore where a seagull lay dead in the

sand.

“Daddy, what happened to him?” the son asked. “He died and went to heaven”, the father replied.

The little boy thought for a moment and then asked his dad,

“Did God throw him back?” And Dad was indeed smiling!
