“Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?” He answered, “The one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” (Lk 10:36-37)

COMMENTARY

The parable of the Good Samaritan places before us a classic example of what Jesus considers a good model of behavior. In addition, this parable has a second lesson since the protagonist was a “Samaritan;” a man belonging to a race despised by those who considered themselves the “Chosen People.” The lesson is simple: you are the “Chosen People” only if you love. Love cannot be replaced even by prayer and the sacraments when what God is asking you, at any given moment, is to help your neighbor. Praying, receiving communion, and going to confession are manifestations of that love, but they cannot be considered the only expressions of love, especially not at the expense of forgetting about the needs of others.

But there is one more lesson in this parable, and it is addressed to those who analyze their conscience from the perspective of not committing sin, of not doing evil. They tend to forget that there is a very subtle but very frequent sin: that of omission. Neither the priest nor the Pharisee had done anything wrong to that beaten man. However, the Lord did not set them up as a model of behavior for his disciples. He who can do good and does not do so commits a sin, an even greater sin, because of the greater need of his neighbor. Christ does not ask us to solve the world’s problems, but He does ask us to contribute our little bit, no matter the effort, so that those problems are solved. We must not forget that love is a command, the duty of the Christian.

When you notice that someone needs help, come to his aid with all your strength, without getting overwhelmed, but being aware that Christ is present in your neighbor in need and the He awaits you there.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Holy Name Society thanks our parishioners who have contributed their time, buying/preparing meals and who have financially assisted us with our mission of

“Feeding the Hungry” at Coatesville shelters this past year. The next Outreach will be this Wednesday, July 20th. If any parishioner is interested in cooking, serving or donating towards the meal, please call Peter DiMaio (610-384-4943) or Anthony Fiorenza (610-486-6899). The Holy Name Society will also be collecting NEW toiletries (such as shampoo, soap, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc.) for the shelters who they serve. These products can be smaller sizes, obtained from a store or a hotel stay. You can place your donations in the boxes labeled “Toiletries for Outreach” which can be found at the entrance tables near the Romano Center. St. Ann’s Helping Hands will be serving delicious meals (right to your home) to those parishioners who are down on their luck or too sick to cook. BUS TRIP

A bus trip to the Sight and Sound Theatre featuring “DAVID” will be held on Wednesday, August 17th. We will leave from the church parking lot at 11:15 a.m. and return about 6:30 p.m. The cost of the ticket is $125 and will include transportation, the production David and lunch at Shady Maple Smorgasbord. You’ll experience great stories of the Bible through spectacular shows filled with dozens of actors, elaborate sets, hundreds of costumes and incredible special effects.
