Page 2: Monthly Weather Review Western Australia June 2013

The Monthly Weather Review - Western Australia is produced twelve times each year by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology'sWestern Australia Climate Services Centre.

It is intended to provide a concise but informative overview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in WesternAustralia for the month.

To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Although everyeffort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until complete quality controlprocedures have been carried out. Major discrepancies will be noted in later issues.

We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to the needs of its readers. If you have any comments orsuggestions, please do not hesitate to contact us:

Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometres per hour(km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Western Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over thepast 24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:

Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of that day.

Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of that day.

Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.

Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may have occurred onthe previous calendar day.

Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.

Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from all availableyears of record, which vary widely from site to site. They are not shown for sites with less than 30 years of record, as they cannotthen be calculated reliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from available observations from all available years of record. The number of years can vary substantially from site to site.

The ACORN-SAT dataset is being used for temperature area averages from December 2012 onwards. The major change from earlierdatasets is that the ACORN-SAT dataset commences in 1910, rather than 1950, and hence rankings are calculated using a larger set ofyears.

RainfallJune 2013 in WA can be summarised as beingunseasonally wet in the north, largely due to heavyrainfall events from a series of cloudbands, andextraordinarily dry in the south, particularly in theSouthwest Land Division (SWLD), due to a lack ofstrong cold frontal activity.

Rainfall was above to very much above average overmuch of the Kimberley, Pilbara, Northern Interior, central and northeast Gascoyne, northern parts ofthe Southern Interior, and the far northernGoldfields. Parts of the central and east Pilbara andwest Kimberley recorded their wettest June onrecord, with monthly totals over 200 mm reported. In contrast, below to very much below averagerainfall was evident in most of the SWLD, southernGascoyne, Goldfields, and Eucla. A significantnumber of sites in the SWLD, particularly in centraland northern parts saw their lowest June rainfall onrecord, with many recording less than 10 mm for themonth.

Averaged across the state as a whole, rainfall duringJune 2013 was above average as a result of thewidespread high rainfall totals in the north. For theSWLD, June 2013 was the driest June sincecomparable records commenced in 1900, while forthe Lower Southwest (southwest of a line fromJurien Bay to Bremer Bay), it was the second driestJune on record, and trailed June 2006, the driestJune on record, by only a very small margin. TheLower Southwest has now recorded its four lowestJune rainfall totals since 1900 in the past 13 years(2006, 2013, 2001, 2010), whilst the SWLD hasrecorded four of its five lowest June totals in the past13 years (2013, 2006, 2001, 1976, 2010).

At the start of June 2013, a Northwest Cloudbandover northern and central WA produced widespreadrain with moderate to heavy falls in the Pilbara, eastGascoyne, northern Goldfields, and west Kimberley.A weak tropical low drifting close to the westKimberley coast on the 5th and 6th broughtthunderstorms and a re-intensification of thecloudband over northern WA with extremely heavyfalls reported in the west Kimberley. West Roebuck, near Broome, recorded 202.0 mm in the 24 hours to9 am on the 6th, which was the highest daily totalrecorded during the event and WA's seventh wettestJune day on record. A few other sites in the regionregistered their highest daily rainfall in June onrecord on the 6th or 7th, with 146.4 mm at BroomeAirport on the 6th exceeding the previous June dailyrecord at the airport of 127.0 mm on 24 June 1968,and also exceeding the highest June daily rainfall atthe Broome Post Office of 143.0 mm on 15 June1901, thus being the wettest June day in the townsince recording began in 1889.

A weak cold front moved through the SWLD on the8th and a low that developed in the wake of the

front and moved along the WA south coast on the9th brought the first widespread rainfall to the SWLDfor the month, with moderate falls in southern partsand generally light falls inland. Cold fronts alsobrought rainfall to the SWLD on the 16th and 17th,and from the 22nd to 25th, but falls were generallymodest.

Cloudbands moved through western and central WAfrom the 11th to 15th and produced moderate toheavy falls mainly in the Gascoyne, whilst anothercloudband moved through the northern half of WAfrom the 17th to 19th bringing moderate rainfall tothe Pilbara and Northern Interior. Anothercloudband, associated with a tropical low northwestof WA, developed over the northwest on the 23rdand slowly moved eastward dissipating on the 29thover the Kimberley. Widespread rainfall wasreported across northern WA as the cloudbandmoved through, and the Pilbara saw exceptionallyheavy rainfall from late on the 23rd to the morningof the 25th. A number of sites in the Pilbara recordedJune daily rainfall records in the 24 hours to 9 am onthe 25th including Roebourne, which recorded 223.6mm, the highest daily fall in the State in June 2013,the highest June daily fall at the site since recordscommenced in 1887, and the second highest dailyfall at the site for any month, only behind 233.7 mmon 7 March 1945. It was also the third wettest Juneday on record in WA behind 304.6 mm on 4 June2002 at Exmouth and 272.2 mm on 11 June 1992 atUrala (Pilbara) .Karratha also recorded its secondwettest day on record with 209.4 mm on the 25th,only behind 212.4 mm on 10 January 2006 as tropicalcyclone Clare moved past the town.

The wettest overall was Roebourne with 275.8 mm,followed by Karratha Aero with 271.6 mm.

The wettest single day was at Roebourne with223.6 mm on the 25th, followed by Karratha Aerowith 209.4 mm on the 25th, followed by WestRoebuck with 202.0 mm on the 6th.
