The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced by the Bureau of Meteorology to provide a concise but informativeoverview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Australia for the month. To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Althoughevery effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until completequality control procedures have been carried out. Any major discrepancies will be noted in later issues. We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to its readers' needs. Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometresper hour (km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of thatday.Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of thatday.Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may haveoccurred on the previous calendar day.Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years1961–1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculatedreliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedlyfrom site to site.

RecordsThe tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locationswhere a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.

MapsThe temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between thevalues shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range ofmaps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found atwww.bom.gov.au/climate/maps.

Accessing dataTables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many moresites and for other times are available from www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

Overview

• above average maxima and minima nationally, although cooler for the southeast

• a particularly cool August for Tasmania (equal-thirdcoolest August mean temperature)

• some record-high daily temperatures in the north• mixed rainfall, but below average nationally

Nationally, maxima were well above average forAustralia as a whole with an anomaly of +0.68 °C,with minima not far behind at +0.54 °C. A number ofsites set new records for high daily or monthly meantemperatures (see page 13).

August was a warm month for Western Australia, with anomalies for each of maximum, minimum andmean temperatures in excess of +1 °C. Daytimetemperatures were also above average for the northof the Northern Territory, much of Queensland, andthe northern half of coastal New South Wales. Dayswere cooler than average for Tasmania, most ofVictoria, parts of southern South Australia, and centralsouthern New South Wales. Nights were in thewarmest 10% of historical observations for August formost of the southern half of Western Australia andadjacent western South Australia, warmer than

average for scattered areas of the eastern mainland, and in the coolest 10% of historical observations forTasmania. For Tasmania as a whole August maximawere the equal-eighth coolest on record and minimathe fourth coolest on record.

Rainfall was slightly below average for Australia as awhole (6% below the long-term average), withsignificant regional differences. August rainfall wasbelow average for most of Victoria except Gippsland, southeast South Australia, northern Tasmania, alongthe west coast of Western Australia and between thePilbara and adjacent inland regions, as well as forpockets of Queensland. Rainfall was higher thanaverage for much of southern Western Australia awayfrom the west coast, the central Northern Territory, southeastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria, and an area stretching from western New SouthWales across northern agricultural districts of SouthAustralia. Some daily rainfall records (see page 16) forAugust were set at the start of the month in WesternAustralia, and late in the month in New South Waleswhen an East Coast Low brought heavy falls.

Significant weather

Strong winds

• Strong winds were reported in Tasmania on the1st and 2nd, with gusts to 100 km/h in parts of thenorth and a gust of 119 km/h at Cape Grim.

• A strong cold front crossing southwest WesternAustralia on the 8th produced gusts up to100 km/h in coastal locations, with small hail in thesouthwest and a light dusting of snow on BluffKnoll in the Stirling Ranges early on the 9th.

• On the evening of the 10th gusts associated with alocalised severe thunderstorm caused damage inTasmania at Ulverstone. The roof of the Lions clubwas lifted and landed 500 m away, the local soccerclub and parts of a shopping complex weredamaged, and a large tree fell onto the railway line.A 105 km/h gust was recorded at private weatherstation.

• In South Australia locally gale force northwestwinds occurred around the middle of the day onthe 11th ahead of a strong cold front. Gusts of90 to 100 km/h were reported over the MountLofty Ranges and eastern slopes, causingscattered tree damage.

Squally west to southwesterly winds occurred inwestern and northern districts as the front passed, including gusts of 95 km/h at Port Lincoln Airport,93 km/h at Marree and 87 km/h at Port Augusta.Power lines were brought down and a child carecentre damaged at Port Augusta.

Severe thunderstorms

Thunderstorm activity was widespread in northernand eastern New South Wales during the 23rd and24th, and parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Beltin Queensland on the afternoon of the 24th. Atornado caused moderate to extensive damage to atleast 12 properties in Dubbo on the afternoon of the24th. 2 to 3 cm hail was reported in many locations, including Sydney, the Blue Mountains, the HunterValley, and Boggabilla near Goondiwindi. Flashflooding occurred in the Sydney CBD, with 22.2 mmof rain in 11 minutes at Observatory Hill on theevening of the 24th.

East Coast Low

An East Coast Low brought heavy rain to the Illawarraand South Coast in New South Wales during the 24thand 25th, with 48-hour totals to 9 am on the 26th ashigh as 439 mm at Beaumont. Substantial floodingoccurred in the Illawarra and South Coast areas,

moderate flooding in the Shoalhaven River, and majorflooding in St Georges Basin. The heavy rain saw theWarragamba dam spill, causing minor flooding in theHawkesbury–Nepean River. Particularly high damlevels at Jerrara Dam resulted in evacuation ordersdue to possible dam failure, although this did noteventuate, with evacuations also ordered in parts ofSussex Inlet and St Georges Basin. Winds gusts ashigh as 104 km/h at Jervis Bay were reported on the25th. In total, there were more than 1800 calls forassistance to the State Emergency Service during theevent and preceding thunderstorms, with 95 floodrescues.

Tornado in Western Australia

A suspected tornado caused minor damage inBunbury in southwest Western Australia on the 29th.

Snow

Snow fell caused some road closures in western andcentral areas of Tasmania on the 1st and 2nd. On the3rd falls were more widespread, with snow to sealevel in the south and west, including Hobart, Burnie,Devonport, Deloraine and Scottsdale, and snowflurries in Launceston. It was the most significantsnow event in Hobart since 24 and 25 July 1986. Fallsof 30 cm were reported at Lake St Clair and CradleMountain with 40 cm at Dove Lake. Mole Creekcaves were closed for first time.

Road and school closures were extensive on the 3rd,affecting northern, central and southern Tasmania. 28crashes were reported across Tasmania, mostly in thenorth, with 23 of those occurring before midday inwet, snowy, icy conditions. One man was killed andanother injured near Bridgewater while two peoplewere trapped for 24 hours when their car was buriedin snow at Mount Field National Park.

Power was cut to numerous properties due to windand snow-laden branches falling onto power lines.

Snow again fell down to 100 m in south and west onthe 5th, with light falls to sea level and 14 roadsclosed that evening. About ten people were rescuedfrom Mount Field National Park during the week, inaddition to the two earlier mentioned, and anotherperson from the Overland Track on 5th.

A light dusting of snow was reported in the mainlandon the 12th, affecting parts of Canberra, Orange, andthe central tablelands of New South Wales.

Synoptic summary

August 2015 was dominated by the passage of highpressure systems, with positive mean sea levelpressure anomalies across the country and particularlylarge anomalies to the south of the mainland.

The month started with a cold front passing over thesoutheast of the country, with an associated surfacetrough extending into central and Western Australia. As this system moved eastward, a high pressuresystem became established over the southwesternquadrant of Australia, directing cool southerly windsinto eastern and northern Australia for several days. The high pressure system tracked eastward acrossthe mainland from the 6th, and was followed by aseries of cold fronts.

A second high pressure system established over theAustralian mainland from the 13th and lingered forseveral days, directing very warm northerly air intosouthwest Western Australia while cold fronts

continued to cross Tasmania. A cut off low and anassociated cold front then crossed southwestWestern Australia between the 17th and 19th beforeintensifying in the Great Australian Bight, directingwarm northerly winds into much of eastern Australia.

On the 21st, a low pressure system crossedsouthwest Western Australia, developing into acomplex low pressure system over central Australiaby the 23rd. The system produced widespreadthunderstorm activity as it crossed New South Wales, before intensifying into an East Coast Low as ittracked off the New South Wales coast on the 25th.The low weakened as it tracked southward beforereintensifying near Tasmania on the 29th. The monthended with a broad surface trough extending throughWestern Australia while a ridge of high pressure oversoutheastern Australia maintained humid easterlyflow across the tropical north.

Temperatures

It was a warm August for much of Western Australia, parts of northern Australia, and the eastern seaboard.Mean temperatures were in the highest 10% ofhistorical observations across much of the Pilbara, western Kimberley and interior district of WesternAustralia, and in parts of coastal southeasternQueensland. Conversely, parts the southeastmainland and all of Tasmania experienced cooler thanaverage temperatures. In Tasmania maxima andminima were in the lowest 10% of historicalobservations over much of the State. The meantemperature for Tasmania was equal-third lowest onrecord, and the coldest since 1951. For Australia as awhole, mean temperatures were 0.61 °C warmerthan the long-term mean, with maximumtemperatures 0.68 °C warmer than average andminimum temperatures 0.54 °C above the long-termaverage.

Maximum temperatures

Maximum temperatures were warmer than averageacross most of Western Australia, excluding parts ofthe southern interior and southeast coast, acrossmuch of the Top End of the Northern Territory, through much of Queensland, northern Pastoraldistricts of South Australia, and along the northeastcoast of New South Wales. Maxima were in thehighest 10% of records for areas of the westernKimberly, extending into northern parts of the Interiordistrict of Western Australia, areas of theRoper–McArthur district of the Northern Territory, parts of the Gulf Country, western Cape York andsoutheast districts of Queensland, and pockets of theMid-North Coast of New South Wales.

Anomalies of mean daily maximumtemperature in August 2015

Decile rank of mean daily maximumtemperature in August 2015

Maxima were cooler than average across parts ofsoutheast Australia, including the Eyre Peninsula andfar southeast in South Australia, the southern half ofVictoria extending into south-central New SouthWales, and across all of Tasmania. In terms ofstatewide averages, August days were the coldestsince 1978 for Tasmania, ranking as equal-eighthlowest out of 106 years of historical observations.

Tasmania experienced a cold start to August as a highpressure system located to the southwest of theGreat Australian Bight directed a vigorous coldsouthwesterly airstream across the State. While coolanomalies persisted for the first few days of themonth, 3 August was the coolest, with the statewidedaily mean maximum temperature just 4.8 °C,resulting in the coldest day for Tasmania as a wholesince 9 July 1997 (4.3 °C).

Days became warmer than average over WesternAustralia by the middle of the month as a broad ridgeof high pressure became established across thesouthern half of the continent. Large parts of theWestern Australia saw their warmest day of themonth on either the 15th or 16th, particularly overwestern, central, and southern districts where anumber of sites in the southwest observed recordhigh daily August temperatures (see page 13).Warmth began to build across the eastern states fromthe 20th as a complex low pressure system centredover the Bight tracked eastwards, directing anorthwesterly airstream into South Australia,Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria andTasmania. Above-average temperatures contractedinto the north during subsequent days, while the lastweek of the month again saw warmer-than-averagedays for Western Australia.

Minimum temperatures

Minimum temperatures were warmer than averagefor most of Western Australia, western SouthAustralia, parts of Queensland in the Gulf Country, southwest and southeast of the State, and parts ofsouthern New South Wales. For Western Australia, minima were in the highest 10% of Augustobservations for most of the southern half of theState. While scattered parts of the mainland sawbelow-average minimum temperatures, all ofTasmania was cooler than average, with minima inthe lowest 10% of historical observations for Augustacross nearly the entire State.

Anomalies of mean daily minimumtemperature in August 2015

Decile rank of mean daily minimumtemperature in August 2015

Overnight temperatures were cooler than average atthe start of the month for much of Australia, particularly so for Victoria and Tasmania. ForTasmania, a very cool start of the month contributedto a statewide August mean minimum temperaturewhich was the fourth coolest on record and thelowest since 1944. Following persistent south tosouthwesterly flow during the first week of themonth, Tasmania observed a State record lowestAugust temperature on record, when the minimumtemperature dropped to −11.1 °C on the 8th atLiawenee. August nights at Hobart (Ellerslie Road)were also the coolest since 1952 with an average of3.7 °C.

In contrast to the cool nights across Tasmania,Western Australia experienced warm nights with themean minimum temperature very much aboveaverage across large areas; the statewide averagecame in equal-ninth warmest on record. Nights in thewest were particularly warm between the 17th and20th owing to a high pressure ridge positioned overthe south of Australia that directed a northerlyairstream into southern parts of Western Australia asa low pressure system and associated cold frontapproached from the west.

Nights became warmer than average across theeastern States from around the 23rd. With middle andupper level cloud developing through the continentalinterior, warm anomalies began to spread intoQueensland, New South Wales and Victoria throughto the 26th. Areas of Queensland and New SouthWales experienced multiple nights with minimumtemperatures in the 99th percentile (near record), withseveral sites in southeast Queensland observing arecord warm August minima on the night of the 24th.

Rainfall

August rainfall was above average in a large area ofsouthern Western Australia, the central NorthernTerritory and neighbouring parts of Western Australia, western Queensland, and parts of the Gulf Country, central, and southeastern Queensland. Above-averagefalls were also observed in southeastern New SouthWales and eastern Victoria, and areas spanningwestern New South Wales, the northern agriculturaldistricts of South Australia and areas between theEyre Peninsula and the southwest of South Australia.

Total rainfall in August 2015

Decile rank of total rainfall in August 2015

Below-average falls were observed across central andwestern Victoria, southeastern South Australia, partsof northern Tasmania, parts of southern and northernQueensland, the South West district of WesternAustralia and in a large area extending from thePilbara into adjacent inland regions. Nationally, rainfallwas 6% below average.

At the start of the month, widespread rainfall wasrecorded across southern and southwest WesternAustralia associated with a trough system extendingfrom a cold front tracked across southeasternAustralia. Several locations in southwest WesternAustralia and the Southeast Coast district had theirhighest August daily rainfall (see page 16) on record inthe 24 hours to 9 am on the 1st. The system alsogenerated moderate falls in coastal South Australia, western Tasmania and southeastern New South

Wales, and light rain over much of Victoria, southernNew South Wales and the remainder of Tasmania.Several more cold fronts crossed the southeast duringthe days to the 5th, producing continued light tomoderate falls in Tasmania, parts of southern andsoutheastern South Australia, southern, central andnortheastern Victoria, and southeastern New SouthWales.

On the 6th an upper-level disturbance and a broadarea of low pressure near the west coast of WesternAustralia generated a cloudband, with widespreadlight to moderate rainfall recorded along the westcoast between the 7th and 9th, when the passage ofa cold front spread falls over much of thesouthwestern quadrant of Western Australia.

A complex series of cold fronts and surface troughstracked across the southeast from the 10th to 12th,generating moderate rainfall totals in northernTasmania, southern South Australia, and a pocket ofsoutheastern New South Wales, while much ofVictoria received widespread, light rainfall over severaldays.

A low and associated cold front crossed southwestWestern Australia on the 17th, bringing widespreadlight rainfall in southern Western Australia.Meanwhile, cold fronts in the Southern Oceanbrought rainfall to Tasmania and southern Victoriabetween the 16th and 18th. Another cold frontapproaching southwest Western Australia on the 19thbrought moderate rainfall totals to the southwest andsouth coastal parts of Western Australia beforetracking into South Australia where moderate rainfallwas produced along the central south coast of SouthAustralia in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 21st.

Another cold front crossed the southwest on the21st, contributing to the development of a complexarea of low pressure and associated surface troughsover southwest Western Australia from the 22nd. Thesystem tracked eastwards, reaching New SouthWales by the 24th and producing widespreadthunderstorm activity before reaching the east coastwhere it developed into an East Coast Low off theNew South Wales coast on the 25th. During itspassage from Western Australia to the east, thecloudband associated with the system broughtmoderate falls to southern Western Australia, southern and central South Australia, most of NewSouth Wales, and eastern Victoria. Falls wereparticularly heavy around the South Australia–NewSouth Wales border and in eastern New South Wales. The system produced totals of more than 300 mm inthe 48 hours to 9 am on the 26th in parts of the

Illawarra and South Coast districts of New SouthWales. Some locations had their wettest August dayon record (see page 16). During this period Tasmaniaalso received falls associated with the passage of acold front.

Moderate falls continued over parts of the southeastwhile the system slipped southwards past Victoria, with some daily rainfall records set in West Gippslandfor the 24 hours to 9 am on the 28th, and heavy fallsin parts of southern Tasmania on the following daybefore the low reintensified near Tasmania on the29th.

Between the 25th and 29th unseasonable heavy fallswere received over central parts of the NorthernTerritory. Initially an upper level trough and jet streamgenerated a middle-level cloudband and thunderstormactivity over the Alice Springs district and westernQueensland, with a middle level disturbancedeveloping over northern Western Australia late in theweek. A surface trough over Queensland alsoproduced low cloud, with moderate falls received incentral and southeastern Queensland during the lastweek of the month.
