ASSP's continuous efforts to bring learning opportunities and latest developments in the field of HSE, ASSP Kuwait Chapter conducted the 7th webinar on “Confined Space Entry Application" for the term 2020-2021 was organized on 20th December 2020 on the ZOOM platform. Where Mr. Radha Krishnan and Mr. Adil Afzal were shared their presentation. More than 135 participants attended and benefitted the session.

American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) - Kuwait Chapter's Process Safety Management (PSM) Forum's 6th webinar was organized on 16th December 2020 on the ZOOM platform where Mr. Ramachandra Murthy Jakkula.presented his case study on “Explosion & Fire at Tesoro's Anacortes Refinery Naptha Hydrotreater Unit-Heat Exchanger” and Mr. Mohammad Moonis experience sharing on " Fatal incident in project area". Around 85 participants attended the session.

MEMBERS HONOURS

ASSP Kuwait Chapter's past & present Executive Committee members along with chairman Mr. Eng. Fadhel Al Ali, met the founding President Mr. Ujwal Ritwik to honor his longstanding support towards the chapter. During his association with ASSP, Mr. Ritwik held various key leadership roles. He was instrumental in initiating the chapter since the inception in the year 2000 . He introduced several iconic programs such as Professional Development Conference, GCC HSE Excellence Award, which have benefited the chapter members and organizations enhancing the chapter's image locally, regionally, and globally. These programs paved the way in getting the present status of the Platinum chapter and were continuously honored as the best & largest chapter outside the USA. He has been an example of a true visionary leader who mentored many HSE professionals in the state of Kuwait. Mr. Ritwik has announced his retirement from KNPC and leaving Kuwait shortly. ASSP Kuwait Chapter Executive Committee 2020-2021 wishes him all the very best in his future endeavors.

MAN-MACHINE VICINITY HAZARD

What is Man Machine Vicinity Hazard?

When a person comes in close working radius of a machine or machine

comes close to a person.

Who is at Risk?

People (include workers, management staff & visitors) who work with, or in close vicinity of heavy vehicles & mobile equipment such as trucks, buses, trailers, crane, loaders, forklifts, etc., are most at risk.

Where are the Hazards?

Workplace hazards involving vehicles may occur during:

•Loading or unloading.

•Securing of loads.

•Attaching Truck Head or Detaching trailer bed.

•Movement of materials and maintenance work.

•Entry and Exit.

•Vehicles reversing and maneuvering.

•Pedestrian movement.

Accident Causes:

•Unauthorized operation of machines, Incompetent Operator.

•Poor Visibility, Unsafe practices, Work Stress, Poor safety cultu

•Poor work practices and bypass of safety procedures.

•Machine breakdown, Unfit machine.

•Vehicle Skid, Toppling of Vehicle, Overloading of Vehicle.

•Operating in bad Weather Condition.

•Human Error, Accidental hit.

•No designated walk way for employees.

Controlling Risks:

1.Routes / paths are to be free from damage surfaces, immediately cleaned from grease or slippery

substances, cleared from obstructions.

2.Workplace routes / paths design to be safer for both vehicles & pedestrians.

3.Clear Road markings, signage showing alert for vehicle operators to speed limits, sharp bends,

junctions, pedestrian crossings, vehicle crossings, blind corners.

4.The safest way to protect pedestrians is to provide:

✓ Pedestrian hard barriers at entry and exits to prevent pedestrians walking in front of vehicles.

✓ Separate, clearly marked footpaths or walkways.

✓ Wider Traffic routes, where separation is not feasible need to be route marked such as line painted onfloor or ground and use of Road Reflectors on Road.
