From the Desk of Father Jon On the love of God

Happy New Year! This year I want you to climb Mt. Mitchell! Oh, and by the way, I want you to start at

Carolina Beach! Yep, that is correct, 386 miles and ascending 6684 vertical feet to the top! Now, that does

sound like a tall order, but in truth, taken in small sections, it is completely doable. The same could be said

about our service to God! For the love of God, I believe most of us would do more than we thought possible.

I can give you some examples of this. If I tell you to read a 1400 page book, you might say, “No way.” But

if I tell you the book is the Word of God, the Bible, and through reading it you may gain insight that could

lead to your salvation, you might say, “Tell me more.” Then if I told you, I will give you a way to read it in

small sections that only take 25 minutes a day, you might say, “I can do that for the love of God!”

Another example might be like the following: A friend asks you to do two things each day for the year 2016.

You might say, “What things do you have in mind?” Then your friend might say, “I want you to pray for

someone you are at odds with, and put 50 cents into a coin collection every day for a charity.” You might

want to resist this course of action, but let’s say your friend makes a great argument for doing it and you agree

to do it and meet at the end of 2016. Time goes by and in December you meet again. What do you think you

will have learned if you follow through? What will be the last instruction your friend gives you?

There are literally as many ways to apply the gospel of Jesus Christ as there are days in our lives! What if

every one of us in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church made a real effort to follow one command of Jesus

Christ our Lord each day we woke up? I believe this will change our parish in ways beyond our imaginations!

I encourage you to make your own list based on Scripture and teachings of the Fathers, but listed below is one

possibility to keep on your end table, on your refrigerator or with your icons.

Monday – Do unto others as I would have them do unto me!! This applies to all phone calls this

day!

Tuesday – Gossip free day. Need I say more! Only allow yourself to talk about your faith, events or

ideas!

Wednesday – Pray for those who anger you. The Jesus Prayer works miracles here. Simply say,

“Lord, Jesus Christ, have mercy on __________________,” until your anger disappears. This works

really well on the roads around Wilmington!

Thursday – Share your Faith in Christ. Find some small way to convey your love for Jesus Christ

with those around you. (Say a short quiet prayer before a meal.)

Friday – Give to those in need. On the day that Christ gave His life for the salvation of the world,

find time to listen to, help physically or otherwise someone you meet.

Saturday – Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Think back on the week. Did you offend anyone?

Ask forgiveness. Did anyone offend me? Forgive them as Jesus did.

Sunday – Love one another as I have loved you. Share your love for Christ with your church family

by worshipping the one, true and living God! 3 hugs minimum!

The list could be very different than this. This is just one idea among thousands. But what ever your list is;

keep it focused on Christ in 2016, keep it real and make it doable for the love of God! Fr. Jon

From the Parish Council President

Barbara Reynolds

HAPPY NEW YEAR & XRONIA POLLA!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with their families and with their extended St. Nicholas family. We

had many beautiful church services during the Nativity season celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

In addition there were many parties for those of all ages as well as opportunities for us to share the joy of the

season with others in our community and others that we will never meet (through our 5th Stop Hunger Now

Event).

As we start 2016, on behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to thank John Burgee for his two years of faithful

service on the Parish Council. Secondly I would like to welcome Jack Poulos who will be beginning his service

as a new parish council member. God grant him strength as he serves the church.

I know we are all excited about starting a new year with new opportunities for our personal growth and for the

growth of our church. If you would like to participate in a ministry of the church please contact any of the min-

istry leaders or the parish council.

We will be kicking off the New Year with many activities

Jan 10 – Vasilopita Sunday: Each year our Philoptochos Ladies Society hosts a Vasilopita auction in our

Hellenic Center after church services. The funds raised go to support St. Basil’s Academy in NY and other

worthwhile charities.

Jan 15 – 17 – HDF: Our dance teams and many from our community will be traveling to Orlando, Florida

to compete in the Metropolis’s Hellenic Dance Festival. It will be a fun weekend and an opportunity for our

youth to interact with the youth from other communities.

Jan 30 – UNCW Intercultural Festival. St. Nicholas will have a booth displaying various Greek cultural

items. The Romiosini and Zoyra dancers will perform at this event.

Jan 31 - Three Hierarchs Day program in the Hellenic Center after Divine Liturgy.

Philoptochos Enosis Chapter #5027

Tia Saffo

Philoptochos is one woman asking another woman to care.

Fifty one women were in attendance for this year’s

Christmas Social. If you were not able to attend, we

missed you! And we all care about you. This year we

supported Diaper Bank of North Carolina, and over 1000

diapers were collected for this local charity.

We honored Fr. Jon with a

Christmas gift to a charity

of his choice. At his re-

quest we made a donation in his honor to IOCC- Greece and a donation to his

Kiva Account. I hope you all enjoyed the festivities as much as I did.

This Christmas, Philoptochos ladies “adopted” five NHHS students and their

siblings as part of our Christmas project. We also had one special family that

we provided clothing and food for this Christmas season, and we were told that

the mother wept when she received our help. If you are interested in continuing

to help families like this please join our efforts.

We are now accepting memberships for 2016. New and renewing members will each receive a Christmas tree

ornament as a token of appreciation. These ornaments will be available in the Hellenic Center immediately

following liturgy each Sunday thru May. We are happy to announce that we now accept credit cards for all

transactions including membership.

January 10, 2016 is Vasilopita Sunday. All women are invited to participate by baking a Vasilopita bread or

cake for this event. Please bring your Vasilopita wrapped or decorated for our live auction. This event tradi-

tionally raises over $2000 for St. Basils Academy and for our local Benevolent Fund.

We will not have a general meeting in January. Our next general meeting will be Sunday, February 7, 2016

immediately following the Divine Liturgy. If you are curious to see what our group is all about, please come

and visit with us!

We wish you a Happy, Healthy New Year.

Stewardship Debra Rallis

Thank you to our fellow parishioners, Doug Brown,

Jack Poulos and Dr. Emmanuel Koklanaris who

shared their personal testimony on the spiritual re-

wards of church involvement. We were all touched

by your heartfelt remarks!

Thank you to Chris Tsingelis and his family for pre-

paring our lunch for St. Nicholas Day. We are grate-

ful to you for your years of service to St. Nicholas.

Theme for 2016

Those that seek the LORD shall never be in want of

any GOOD THING!

BRING THEM TO ME

Jesus Is concerned about the 5,000 men plus women

and children that are with him in the wilderness. His

disciples tell him that all they have are five loaves

and two small fish that a boy has offered. Jesus’ re-

sponse is the phrase, “Bring them to me” Jesus then

takes the loaves, blesses and breaks them, and feeds

5,000 men plus women and children.

We also bring what we have to Jesus. We offer bread

and wine. He returns it to us and His body and blood

in Holy Communion. We offer ourselves and we be-

come the Church, His body on earth. No matter how

much we give, He cannot be outdone. Just like the

boy who offered the loaves and the fish, if we offer

what we have – however great or small our gift –

with prayer and humility, God will receive our gifts

and multiply them to feed His people.

Community Service Christina Mount

The Community Service Ministry is growing and has

a number of active and passionate members. We

have been busy both in the St. Nicholas Community

and the Wilmington Community. Before Thanksgiv-

ing we were able to prepare a number of Thanksgiv-

ing meals for the members of our St. Nicholas Com-

munity who are less able to cook their own turkey

and have difficulties getting out into the community.

This was done in coordination with Parish Care. The

Coupon Ministry provided the turkey and other meal

items needed to prepare these meals. Hopefully by

the time you read this we have also been able to coor-

dinate with Parish Care again to provide meals for

Christmas.

Last year the Community Service Ministry provided

Christmas gifts for two women at First Fruit Minis-

tries, which is a program that helps homeless women

and families get back on their feet, become em-

ployed, and eventually move into homes again. This

year we are providing Christmas gifts to four women.

One thing many of us do not think about is cars and

auto maintenance. We have a plan to provide First

Fruit Ministries with at least six oil changes for the

few women who have cars. Being able to get around

our community is important for the transition from

homeless to housed. First Fruit Ministries does so

many other things for the community of Wilmington;

I hope we can assist them to a greater degree this

year.

Romiosini and Zoyra

Our Zoyra and Romiosini dancers would like to wish

everyone a Happy New Year and thank everyone

who participated in their Christmas Caroling fund-

raiser.

We are all excited and send our prayers for good luck

and good health to our dancers and their families who

will be traveling to Orlando on January 15-18 for the

Hellenic Dance Festival.

We again can't express enough of our gratitude to

Zaharoula Katsikis, Lucas Bostic and Katerina Kati-

skis for directing and teaching the dances; Nota Du-

kas for costumes; and Alexandros for music consulta-

tion.

Please mark your calendars for Jan 30th to see our

dancers perform at UNCW Intercultural Festival

again. Look for updates in the bulletin for perfor-

mance times.

Hellenic Culture Kitsa Wiersteiner

Please join us after Divine Liturgy for the Three Hier-

archs Day program in the Hellenic Center on Sunday,

January 31st. Our speaker, Dr. Ron Demas who will

present a talk on the Three Hierarchs. Coffee hour

Activities Committee. Please don’t miss this im-

portant program!

Greek School Anestis Logothetis

The Greek School children and parents sang Greek

and American Carols (Kalanda) to the residents of the

AHEPA House during their Christmas dinner offered

by the local AHEPA chapter. This event, which was

held on Monday, December 21, was very well re-

ceived, as it was received in past years. The children

also helped in serving the dinner which was provided

by Chris's restaurant. It was a very rewarding experi-

ence for everyone involved.

The last day of Greek School will be Friday, Dec. 18

and it will restart on Friday, January 8.

We would like to inform you the annual Hellenic

School-AHEPA Valentine dance is planned for Satur-

day, February 13, 2016. As in the past, there will be

an abundance of tasty food, good music and lots of

fun. The funds will support the Greek School and

AHEPA activities. The whole community is invited

and we hope to see you all at the dance.

We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New

Year.

Forever Young Stella Vallianos

The Forever Young club had a wonderful get together

for our December meeting. Kay Skandalakis, together

with Sue Lawler, prepared the most wonderful lunch-

eon for us-hors d’oeuvres, lunch, and dessert. Every-

thing was delicious and we all wish to thank her for

her thoughtfulness and generosity. I know that her

mother, Angeline, was there singing along with us the

old Greek songs that she enjoyed so much. We must

not forget to thank Alexandros Theodoropoulos who

has been coming every December to play his guitar

and lead us in singing the old Greek favorites.

We will not meet in January. Our next meeting will

take place on February 2nd. Happy New Year every-

one!

Hellenic Culture - Special Activities Kitsa Wiersteiner

UNCW’s annual Intercultural Festival will take place

in the Burney Center of UNCW on Saturday, January

30. St. Nicholas will have a booth displaying various

Greek cultural items, which will proudly represent our

Hellenic and Orthodox heritage. Many nationalities

participate in the Intercultural Festival with various

interesting and beautiful performances. Come and

show your support for our parishioners and youth.

Don’t miss the performance of Romiosini and Zoyra

dancers!

Community News

AHEPA

Several AHEPA Brothers participated in the parish’s

5th Annual STOP HUNGER NOW meal-packaging

event in our Hellenic Center on Saturday, December

5th. In addition, AHEPA 408 Philanthropies, Inc.

made a $500.00 contribution the Parish’s SHN fund-

raising campaign. This was the Chapters fifth annual

contribution made in support of our parish’s public

service project.

The Brothers of Cape Fear Chapter No. 408 and their

spouses enjoyed their Chapter’s annual Christmas din-

ner at Giorgio’s Italian Restaurant on Sunday, Decem-

ber 13th. Twenty-one people attended the dinner, en-

joyed good food and fellowship during the Christmas

holidays.

On Monday, December 21st, the Brothers served a

traditional Christmas Dinner to the residents and staff

at AHEPA 408 Apartments on North Kerr Avenue.

The delicious Christmas dinner was donated, prepared

and delivered to the AHEPA apartment complex by

Christos and Angela Tsingelis of Chris’s Restaurant.

Youth from our Parish’s Hellenic School entertained

the guests and sang Greek & English Christmas car-

ols. The Brothers worked the serving line and the chil-

dren helped serve the dinners to our residents.

Our AHEPA Brothers wish all parishioners and their

families a happy and healthy new year. Xronia Polla

(“many years”)!

STOP HUNGER NOW

“Thank you” to all parishioner and parish organiza-

tions that made financial contributions towards our 5th

Annual STOP HUNGER NOW (SHN) meal-

packaging campaign. These parish organizations in-

cluded: Ladies Philoptochos Society, Hellenic School,

Pan-Icarian Brotherhood and AHEPA 408 Philanthro-

pies, Inc. We also thank the KT Community Founda-

tion (DaVita HealthCare) for their $3,000 grant award,

again, this year. In total, we raised in excess of

$10,700 during our 2015 SHN fundraising campaign.

In addition to our St. Nicholas Parishioners, we also

thank the parishioners from St. Basil the Great Ortho-

dox Church and our many friends, who came and

helped us package meals during our December 5th

event. We packaged a total of 36,072 meals in about

3 hours on that Saturday. What a great job!

The STOP HUNGER NOW organization and its

partners will distribute these meals via schools and

orphanages to people in developing countries, who are

starving and/or malnourished. On their behalf we say:

“Thank you very much!”

Prayers before Making The Prosphoron

+ In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy

Spirit. Amen.

+ Father, bless!

Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of truth, who is eve-

rywhere present and filling all things, treasury of every

good, and giver of life, come and abide in us and cleanse us

from every stain and save our souls. O Good One.

Amen. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mer-

cy on us. (3 times)

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now

and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, forgive our sins.

Master, pardon our transgressions. Holy One, visit and heal

our infirmities for your name’s sake.

Lord, have mercy. (3 times)

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now

and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by Thy name. Thy

Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heav-

en. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our tres-

passes as we forgive those who trespass against us. And

lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of

the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forev-

er and to the ages of ages. Amen.

The Reading is from the Gospel according to St. John.

Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You.

Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the

flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no

life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood

has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For

My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed. He

who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I

in him. As the Father sent Me, and I live because of the

Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.

This is the bread which came down from heaven – not as

your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this

bread will live forever.” John 6:53-58

Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You.

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ

our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.

Prayers while Making The Prosphoron

Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sin-

ner.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

O God our God, the Creator of all things visible and invisi-

ble, I thank You this day for Your only-begotten Son that

came into the world to save our souls. I thank You for the

Mystical Supper which our Lord Jesus Christ celebrated

with His apostles. I thank You for the Divine Liturgy,

through which we can commune with Him by “eating His

flesh and drinking His blood,” and thus become partakers

of eternal life. Lord, I know that without you, I can do

nothing. I thank you for the strength to complete this gift

to Your glory. Amen.

HOME BLESSINGS

Fr. Jon requests that all people desiring a Home Blessing

after Theophany to please call the office and schedule one

as soon as possible. Father will be calling and visiting

many people in January and February as part of Pastoral

Outreach.

Congratulations

For all the people celebrating their birthday, anniversary,

and name day in the month of January, may you have many

happy years! Many Happy Years!

Congratulations to Michael and Kippy Batuyios on the

birth of their baby girl, Charlotte Eloise. She was born on

We express our deepest sympathy to Thalia Kefalas and

family on the passing of her sister Efthemia, in Australia on

November 27th. May her memory be eternal!

On December 6 we held a 3-year memorial for Eleni

Vogiatzis, wife to Anastasios, and mother of Bill and John

Vogiatzis. May her memory be eternal!

On December 13 a 15-year Trisagion was chanted for the

memory of Panagiota Mavroidis, mother of Tina Bostic.

May her memory be eternal.
