HOMECOMING ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Moanalua High School Student Association would like to extend its appreciation to all the faculty/staff, students and alumni who assisted with and participated in the 41st Annual Homecoming Festivities in September. Special thanks go out to Principal Robin Martin and all of the administrators, chaperones, committee advisors and chairpersons, as well as Ms. Laurie Hayashida and the cafeteria staff, the custodial staff, and the security staff for going above and beyond their regular duties to make all of the activities a success.

We would also like to recognize Senator Glenn Wakai, Representatives Linda Ichiyama and Aaron Johanson, Councilmember Joey Manahan, Moanalua Alumna Jamie Hamamoto, as well as Mr. Bryan Sakai from First Hawaiian Bank who served as judges for the cheer, banner, and floorshow competitions. Having community support is always much appreciated! We hope to see more of you in future activities this year!

CANNED FOOD DRIVE The Moanalua High School Student Association is sponsoring its annual Fall canned food drive beginning NOW and running until Thursday, November 17, 2016. A contest will be run through homeroom classes with the homeroom bringing in the highest average number of cans per student wins a prize. Of course, winning prizes is merely an incentive. The real value of this drive is to help those who are less fortunate than we. All donated food will go to the Hawaii Food Bank and other institutions that help to provide for the less fortunate for distribution. Please help! SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE From now until the end of July, the Student Government officers are holding a school supply drive. Initially, whatever is collected will be donated to our complex schools: Moanalua, Red Hill, Salt Lake, and Shafter Elementary Schools as well as Moanalua Middle and High School, but if we have a large surplus, we will donate to the rest of the State’s public schools. Although we will accept ANY supply donations, the following specific supplies are most needed:

Back-packs Paper Towel Rolls Colored Markers Pens (black, blue, red ballpoint) Colored Pencils Pens (Sharpie) Composition Books (non-spiral) Portfolio (with pockets) Crayons (16, 24 or 48) Protractor Filler Paper (college or wide ruled) Rulers (12” with standard and metric) Glue/Glue Sticks School Supply Box Hand Soap Scissors (blunt or sharp) Highlighters (broad tip) Three-Ring Binders (1” – 1 ½”) Index Cards (3 x 5) Tissue (a.k.a. “Kleenex,” 200+ count) Liquid Paper/Correction Tape Wood #2 Pencils Please note that this is not a class competition or a contest to see who can bring the most. We just want to do something for our fellow younger students in our community who, because of the present economy, are in need so they can start off the school year right. You may bring donations to the S.A. Room, T4, or drop them off in the school office. Thank you in advance for your generosity! CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION DAY The annual Moanalua High School Student Association Campus Beautification Day will be held this year on Friday, November 11, from 8:00 until 10:00 a.m. We would like to ask for donations of a few things that will make this day possible: paint rollers (any size), old t-shirts or towels for rags, buckets, and refreshments such as chips, cookies and/or pastries. We are providing drinks and some cookies. If you can donate anything listed, please bring donations to the Student Activities Room, T4, or drop them off in the main office and label items “For Campus Beautification Day.”

SERVICE HOURS: REQUIRED OR NOT?

The quick and easy answer to this question is, NO! Service hours are NOT required in order for a student to graduate. A student can go through all four years of high school and not do a single minute of community or school service, but as long as all credit requirements are met, the student graduates. So, why do any service?

Well, first and foremost, if your child is planning to attend college or attempt to obtain any other post- secondary education, or even if s/he is planning to enter the work force right after graduation, having service hours listed on a personal data sheet (PDS) or resume is always a good way to differentiate yourself from others attempting to enroll or trying for a position. It is safe to say that the more service hours you have, the better your PDS or resume will look. If you think about the dozens or maybe even hundreds of others applying for a college or job, the selection person or persons/committee will need a way to try to narrow the list of candidates, and one way to do that is to look at what the applicant has done in the way of service.

At the school level, some advisors also require service hours. Class advisors may require service hours in order to earn a service cord at graduation or maybe to run for prom court. Club advisors may require service hours in order to remain a member of the club or to run for office. Athletic coaches might even require service hours from athletes. Your child should check with his/her advisor or coach to see if that is the case as different advisors and coaches have differing requirements.

Finally, volunteering for community or school service projects is a mutual benefit to both the student and the organization for whom the service is being done. Whether it is picking up litter in a park, helping the homeless at a shelter, cleaning the school grounds, or passing out water at a charity walk, the organization being served obviously benefits from the help, but so does the student in the way of feeling good about oneself knowing that s/he helped someone. A quote from the Mental Health Foundation states:

1. It reduces stress. Positive emotions reduce stress, boost our immune system, and in turn can protect us against disease.

2. It helps get rid of negative feelings. Negative emotions such as anger, aggression or hostility have a negative impact on our mind and body. Engaging in random acts of kindness can help decrease these feelings and stabilize our overall health.

3. It can help us live longer. Giving and helping others may increase how long we live.

Students should keep track of such hours on their own and not leave it up to someone else. If the service is being done for an organization OUTSIDE of the school such as a hospital, environmental group, or community group, there will always be an adult in charge of the project, and s/he should be able to provide a student with some sort of document or at least contact information in order to verify participation. If the service is being done for the school, then the advisor or staff member in charge should also be able to provide some evidence that the student participated.

So once again, in order to graduate, service hours are NOT required, but participating in or

volunteering for service projects certainly benefits society and the individual!

FAQs on MOHS Project Grad

1. What is Project Graduation? Project Graduation is for classmates to get together one last time before heading off to future endeavors. The Fun-Filled overnight event is Alcohol & Drug-Free and fully chaperoned to keep our students safe.

2. Why do we have Project Graduation? The night of graduation is the riskiest time for teenagers to be on the road nationwide. By keeping graduates in a safe and fun environment, Project Graduation has reduced the number of fatalities occurring on graduation night.

3. Does Project Graduation receive school subsidies? No! We do not receive any funding from the school. We need to raise funds, starting from the Freshmen year to Senior year and pool our fundraising so each graduating class can hold a Project Graduation Event every year.

4. What’s the difference between MOHS Project Graduation United and the Project Graduation Committee for the Graduating Class? We all make up MOHS Project Graduation !! Project Gradutaion United steers the fundraising efforts needed to fund the event(besides registration fees, other funds are needed). The Project Graduation Event Committee plans and implements the annual event for the graduating class. Volunteers help in one or both
