Fr. Rogelio, the Ministry of

Consolation, & Staff extend our condolences to the families of:

Samuel Garcia (brother to Manuel Garcia)

Angelina C. Tejeda (mother to Ruben Tejeda)

May their soul and the souls of all the departed, rest in peace.

Good Liturgy begins at home A few years ago, Fr. Rogelio reminded us that preparing for the Eucharist begins at home in our decision to attend mass. How do we prepare our-selves going before God receiving His Word and receiving His Body and Blood? We may want to prepare by: ♦ Read and pray over the readings that will be proclaimed during mass. Do this as a family

by going to usccb.org and select the readings of the day. ♦ Consider going to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, considered as one of the sacraments

of healing. ♦ Pick out our Sunday best attire to go into God’s house and as we go before him in the

Sacrament of the Eucharist. Take off those noisy keys you won’t need them in church, re-move hats and sunglasses, and remember to discard the gum. Help your children pick out their clothes for mass.

♦ Pay close attention to the Eucharistic prayer where the celebrant offers a prayer to God, the Father, by Christ in union with us.

♦ Be reverent in the communion line, we are about to become the living tabernacle receiv-ing Christ in us. Our response AMEN means we are saying yes this is the body and blood of Christ. We believe.

♦ Stay to receive the final blessing from the celebrant, which is the conclusion of the mass with the Deacon sending us out to take God’s word to the outside world.

ATTENTION ALTAR SOCIETY:

Our New Year’s meeting/ luncheon with be held on Jan. 18, 2019 at 12pm-3pm in the Mission Branch Library.

See you there

13 The Baptism of the Lord Feast The Baptism of the Lord is another epiphany, a manifestation of Jesus’ identity to the public. Last week, Gentile magi recognized him. Today, God proclaims him the beloved Son before the witnesses to the baptism. This feast concludes the Christmas season. Patristic com-mentators indicate something of the baptism of the Lord: “If you rejoiced to see Jesus in the lap of his mother Mary, rejoice today to see Jesus embraced by his Father.”

The Altar Servers

would like to extend their gratitude to the parishioners who contributed to their Christmas project.

Over 100 pajamas and many coloring books/crayons were collected for the children at St. Peter/St Joseph's Home

Thank you, Gracias, Merci, Grazie!! We cannot thank you enough.

We ask our patron saint San Joselito to pray for you.

END OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Dur-ing this season, we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with him…including the fact that he was born to die for us. This weekend we end the Christmas season. Happy Ordinary Time!

Mission San Jose will host an

Annulment Workshop on

Monday, January 14 at 6:30pm in the Parish Center.

Why does the Church require a divorced Catholic to obtain an annulment before marrying in the Church?

In fidelity to Jesus' teaching, the Church be-lieves that marriage is a lifelong bond (see Matt 19:1-10); therefore, unless one's spouse has died, the Church requires the divorced Catholic to obtain a declaration of nullity be-fore marrying someone else. The tribunal pro-cess seeks to determine if something essential was missing at the moment of consent, that is, the time of the wedding. If so, the Church can declare that a valid marriage was never actual-ly brought about on the wedding day.

La Historia de Mission San Jose

Iglesia de Terrado

The 1st stone church at Mission San Jose was a church with a flat, earthen roof located on the site of the present church. Examination of the present church structure revels a portion of the 1st church still survives, having been incorporated into the west wall at the NW corner of the convent. The church was 1st mentioned in 1744 by s Fr. Espinoza and then by Fr. Mariano de Los Dolores y Viana, Fr. President of the Queretaran Missions, in 1755. The church was about 97 feet long, 19 feet wide, and an interior height of 19 feet. There were 4 altars and a bell tower with 4 bells, a large and a small. The church was joined to the convent, the custom at the time. In the sacristy was a cabinet with 4 drawers which held vestments, 2 small chests, 1 large chest with a key that held more vestments, and a gilded niche on 1 wall.

SELF-DISCIPLINE

The greatest of all warriors in the siege of Troy had not the preeminence because nature had given him strength and he carried the largest bow, but because self-discipline had taught him how to bend it.

—Daniel Webster

AUTODISCIPLINA

El más grande de todos los guerreros en el asedio a Troya no tenia la preeminencia porque la naturaleza le había dado fuerza y llevaba el arco más grande, sino que debido a la autodisciplina el sabía cómo doblar el arco. —Daniel Webster

Government Shutdown

We all are aware that the government shutdown has caused some ramifications here at Mission San Jose and all the Missions. The only Park Service Employees available are the Park Police. Given all this the parish has been trying to step up and do what we can to help. If this shutdown continues we will be seeking volunteers to help keep our Mission clean. Thank you in advance for your support and let us all pray that some kind of settlement is reached soon.

Church Closure

During the government shutdown we had to periodically lock the Church during the day. We regret having to do this but given the circumstances of not having park service em-ployees on site we had no alternative. The City of San Antonio is reaching out to see what they can do to provide more security for the Missions.
