In the weeks leading up to Christmas, it seems everywhere we turn, we are pushed to spend more, do more, entertain more, and generally rush around at a frantic pace — all to create a “perfect” Christmas day. (Catholic Stewardship Consultants) But as Paul says in his letter to the Romans, “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 1:7

We must remember that this is the time of Peace and Joy. Spend time with Jesus this Christmas and prayerfully consider making a pledge to the On the Way - ¡Ándale! Cam-paign – it will give you peace and joy.

Gaudete Sunday

The rose candle is lit on the third Sun-day, Gaudete Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sun-day is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas. The Advent sea-son is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas.

Las Posadas at Mission San Jose A wonderful Mexican Christmas tradition, Las Posadas, literally translates in English as “the inns”or “the lodgings” and symbolizes the Biblical journey of Mary and Joseph as they searched for shelter in Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus. Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration that lasts from December 16 to Christmas Eve and includes a candle-lit procession of children, parents and families reenacting Mary and Joseph’s journey through Bethlehem. This holiday ritual includes a lively and colorful pageant of children (the pilgrims or “peregrinos”) –costumed as Jo-seph, Mary, angels, shepherds and the Three Wise Men, who travel from house to house until they reach a designat-ed home where Las Posadas will be celebrated. Upon arri-val, the hosts or “innkeepers” meet the procession at the door to begin the exchange of lyrics from the traditional “pidiendo Posada”. The reenactors go to three homes until they find lodging at the third home where they pray, sing Christmas carols and end the night with a festive celebra-tion.

This year our one-day Posada will be on Thursday, December 19th, to begin at 7:00 p.m. on the grounds of Mission San Jose Church. Please join us to make this celebration of Las Posadas a wonderful learning experience for our children as we come together in the spirit of Christmas to accompany Joseph and Mary on their journey. La Posada Piñata

La Posada ends with the traditional pińata which has 7 points. Those 7 points represent the Seven Deadly Sins. The beating of the pińata symbolizes the mortification that Christians exercise in overcoming personal sin. The blindfold represents our blind faith. The candy within each pińata characterizes the sweetness of God's grace made available to us through the birth of Jesus.

Chapel Pews

As you all are aware the remodeling of the parish chapel will begin very soon. The re-model also includes new seating. The cur-rent pews we have are for sale for $200.00 each or best offer. All money raised will be used for the new chap-el. The pews won't last so if you are interest-ed please contact the office.

REASON TO REJOICE

Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isai-ah exuberantly describes the idyllic transfor-mation of all creation as a result of God’s pres-ence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5).
