ROY HOWELL TAKES OVER AS MANAGER: The Seattle Mariners announced that hitting coach Roy Howell would assume managerial duties for the Jackson Generals for the remainder of the 2015 season beginning June 30. Jim Horner, who had managed Seattles Double-A affiliate since the beginning of last year, recently accepted an assistant coaching position at Washington State University. It marks the second-consecutive season that Howell has taken over as manager for a Seattle affiliate. Last March, he replaced Rich Donnelly as the manager at Triple-A Tacoma after Donnelly was named the Mariners third-base coach in Spring Training. He led the Rainiers to a 74-70 mark, and his 74 victories were tied for the 9th-most by a manager in his first full season. Howell, in his 4th season with the Mariners organization, spent 2012 and 2013 with the High Desert Mavericks in the California League. His managerial resume includes three seasons at short-season Eugene (2003-05), three seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02).

    Seattle Mariners minor league SS Ketel Marte and RHP Edwin Diaz represented the World team in the 17th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, as part of All-Star weekend. Marte, 21, went 2-for-2 with 1 RBI playing second and batting leadoff for the World Team. The Mariners have had 35 selections (including Marte and Diaz) to the Futures Game since its first began in 1999.     Seattle Mariners minor league INF/OF Patrick Kivlehan (AAA Tacoma Rainiers) was named to the 2015 U.S. Pan American Mens Baseball Team roster, INF/OF Jordy Lara (AA Jackson Generals) was named to the 2015 Dominican Republic Pan Am roster and OF Tyler ONeill (A Bakersfield Blaze) was named to the 2015 Canada Pan AM Team roster. Canada won the gold medal in the Pan Am Games final on July 19 in Toronto, 7-6 in 10 innings over Team USA. Kivlehan hit .342 during the 11-game tour with Team USA, including a squad-best three home runs. ONeill hit 3 home runs and Lara hit 1 HR in the tournament.
