~ A-ga-ming Golf Resort • Kewadin, MI ~

A-Ga-Ming means many things. To the NativeAmericans, it is a word meaning "on the shore." Forgolfers from across the Midwest and the nation, itmeans a wonderful resort vacation, complete withlodging, dining and world-class relaxation. For theNorthern Michigan golf community, it means a 54-hole golf resort nestled on the shores of Torch Lake, just a few miles from Lake Michigan.

Welcome to the A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort, whereyou'll find valued stay and play packages withunlimited golf, memberships, a fairy tale weddingvenue, and so much more. The course has drawnpraise from distinguished golf critics. Golf Digestmagazine gave the Antrim Dells and Torch coursesfour stars. The magazine also named Sundance thethird best new golf course in the country for 2006and gave it 4 1/2 stars in 2009. Golfing in Michiganmagazine also said A-Ga-Ming has "the most spec-tacular views in the state."

The Torch CourseThe original 18 holes at A-Ga-Ming, renamed in

2005 for the famous lake that the course overlooks, have been re-routed to make for a more enjoyableround. The Torch is situated majestically on theridges offering spectacular views of Torch Lake andthe surrounding countryside. Playing nearly 6,700yards from the tips, the Torch is a challenging shot-makers course that favors accuracy over length.Water comes into play on 11 of the holes, as domature stands of woods throughout the golf course. The Torch is known as one of the most scenic golfcourses in all of northern Michigan.

The Sundance CourseSundance opened to rave reviews in June 2005.

Nestled on glacier-carved bluffs between Torch

Lake and Grand Traverse Bay, Sundance exempli-fies the extraordinary natural beauty of northwestMichigan with views of both Torch Lake to the eastand Lake Michigan to the west. With wide, playable fairways, superbly sculpted greens, vastwindswept bunkers, heather-clad mounding andspectacular vistas, Sundance will delight thescratch golfer or a newly fledged beginner.Sundance has quickly become one of the premiergolf courses in northern Michigan.

The Dell's CourseFor more than 30 years, The Dells has been one

of Northern Michigan's favorite courses to play. This classic Jerry Matthew's design surrounds thegolfer with natural beauty and spectacular views. The front nine features a beautiful parkland settingwith acres of mowed grass, which allows a smoothtransition into the woods and creeks of the backnine. Host of Michigan's amateur championship forseveral years, The Dells is truly a fair and fun testof golf.

This annual event at Bedford Valley justcontinues to be one of the favorite SeniorTournaments in Michigan. Over one hun-dred top pros and amateurs are in the fieldthis year looking to capture the title.

In the first round, three familiar names –Randy Erskine, Bob Ackerman and LeeHoutteman – shot rounds of 70, 2 under parand found themselves tied for the lead afterthe first day of competition.

Barry Redmond leads another group ofplayers, David Nolan, Tim Metko andEdward Vomastek, who shot 71. Defendingchampion Chuck Pohl found himself in a

group of seven players who shot 72, settingup a great shootout for the final 18 holes.

Second and final round action was muchlike the first day with warm but nice play-ing conditions and low scores. Nine playerswould better par and Ron Beurmann wouldlead the pack with a six under round of 66followed by Charles Bowles with fiveunder 67.

Ron started the final round two shotsbehind the leaders and finished the tourna-ment at six under and a total score of 138.

In the final group, Erskine andHoutteman got off to rough start and would

fall back to the pack but Ackerman stayedsteady but failed to capture enough birdiesto catch Beurmann.

Ron is the director of golf at the CountryClub of Jackson and his fabulous round of66 would be good enough to capture hisfirst Club Car Senior Open Title. BobAckerman would finish in second place, three shots behind Ron.

The low amateur this year was EdVomastek from Traverse City, Mich. Edshot 143 for the tournament.

In the Super Senior Division, Pete Doerr,an amateur from Coldwater, Mich., cap-tured a shot victory with a score of 150.

Teaching philosophy focuses onpositive communication and use

of drills to create an excitinglearning opportunity

So many times when speaking tomy clients or discussing the golfswing in a leisurely conversation do Ihear talk about swing positions at thehalfway back position or at the top ofthe back swing, but rarely do I hearpeople focusing on impact position. Imust say that as an industry as awhole we as teachers do not portraythe position of impact with enoughimportance. If we start this seasonout with a renewed focus on improv-ing our impact position, we all willbecome better golfers! Here is a pic-ture of Tiger Woods at impact. Let’stry and copy this position throughworking on a drill.

Try this drill:

IMPACT LOADER:

Get set up in your normal set upposition but lift the club face up andplace it in front of the ball on the tar-get side. Lean the shaft of the clubslightly forward while moving amajority of your weight on your leadfoot and towards your heel of thatfoot. Swing back and attempt toreturn to that position with an exag-gerated shorter than normal followthrough! It should feel like a simulat-ed punch shot that you are trying tohit lower. Hit ten of these in a rowand then take three normal swings.Repeat this practice simulation for 45minutes twice per week and you willstart to hear and feel better impact.

Good Luck!!

Many Birdies!!

Indian River Golf Club To Host GAMWoman’s Sr. State Championship

An Up North Must Play For over 30 years, several of us southern players have enjoyed this

great Northern golf course just south of the Mackinac bridge. In the small town of Indian River, only 30 minutes away from

Gaylord, Petoskey, and Harbor Springs and only 15 miles south ofthe bridge, is this fantastic golf course known as the Friendliest Clubin the North.

For many of us, and I can speak first hand, we have had the pleas-ure to visit this beautiful course on an annual basis and watch thetransformation into a true championship caliber golf course.

For several years it was just a nice small town northern golf coursecarved out of the woods above the Indian River with very challeng-ing greens. It was just a great place to relax, play some golf and enjoythe river, lakes and nature.

Like many golf courses with a desire to improve, many holes start-ed to be redesigned. Holes were lengthened, dog legged and sometrue risk/reward shot opportunities were strategically designed.

During all these transformations, the green complexes just keptgetting better and in some ways are the real teeth of this golf course. The Indian River plays a big part in scoring on these greens andknowing where the river is at all times will be a big part of your suc-cess.

In addition to the course changes, several years ago a beautifulclubhouse was designed and constructed just above the ninth green. As the course developed so did the adjacent real estate propertieswhere beautiful homes were placed along “some” of the fairwaysoffering a real calm, surreal, peaceful setting.

The club has recently opened two newly remodeled holes (#4 and#17) and in August of this year Indian River Golf Club will gainsome new exposure hosting the 16th GAM Women’s Senior StateChampionship. The exposure will undoubtedly create future opportu-nities for this club with more championships or qualifiers and publicattraction.

This hidden gem is no longer a secret and it’s a must play for thoseof you that love to play these northern golf courses.

New places, faces, friends and champi-ons were all part of the 2012 MichiganPublinx State Match play Championship!

For the first time ever the Publinx SMPChampionship was contested in the MotorCity, home of the Michigan Publinx GolfAssociation. The history of this champi-onship is long and deep with a rich traditionof players and great tournament locations.

This year a new chapter will be added tothe history of the tournament. With the tour-nament held in the Rochester/Auburn Hillsarea (Twin Lakes Golf & Swim Club andBlack Heath Golf Club) the field saw a num-ber of new first time players, a bigger fieldand some new exceptional talent.

Traditionally this tournament draws someof the top talent in the state and this year wasno exception with Greg Davies, Bill Zylstra,Jason May, Kevin Klemet, Eric Spencer andmany others in the field.

The first two days of the 36-hole qualify-ing found players shooting some excellentscores. Jason May turned in two fabulousrounds of 65 and 70 to claim “MedalistHonors” with a total score of 135 in theOpen Division.

In the Senior Division Dale Robb wouldtake the honors, shooting 71 & 74 for a totalscore of 145. Cliff Davis would capture theSuper Senior Division with a score of 146.

The qualifying scores determined the seat-ing for the balance of the tournament, whichis match play action and where the excite-ment really begins and the eventual champi-on is crowned.

The top seeds always have a target onthere back as the players to beat and it’s verydifficult for the top seed to be the eventualchampion and this year was no exception.

The first and second round found many ofthe top seeds losing in their perspective divi-sion, Jason May (Championship), Dale

Robb (Senior Championship) and SteveSmith (Senior First Flight) only Cliff Davis(Super Seniors) and Vasko Stefanoski (OpenFirst Flight) would go deep into their divi-sions and play in the finals.

Each year there are some new players whodecide it’s time to test their game and occa-sionally there are some young talents whostart to build a name. This year Austin Hill,Deuce Sherman and Alex Zeoli each playedsome tremendous golf and will be heardfrom in the future.

As the match play action unfolded it wasAlex Zeoli who decided the time was now tobe heard from and marched his way throughthe Championship Division capturing a 6 &5 win in his first match, 4 & 3 in the second, one up in the third and fourth, 6 & 5 in thesemi final to earn the opportunity to faceEric Spencer in the final match.

Eric Spencer is a very good player whoalso won some great matches beating thelikes of Sorentino and Dagenias in his trip tothe finals.

The final match was exceptional, exciting, very close and very well played by both Alexand Eric with Alex Zeoli coming out on topwith a 2 up victory.

In the Senior Championship Division,Jeff Barnes (Columbiaville) and TomMoores (Holly) worked their way throughthe bracket of matches to face each other inthe final. Barnes beat the top seed Dale Robband then faced tough matches withMcAnulty and Ellis to face Moores who beattop competition in Martin and Sweeney. Thefinal match was a dogfight with Mooresholding the lead through much of the matchbefore Barnes mounted a charge and eventu-ally beat Moores in 20 holes.

In the Super Senior Division, Cliff Daviswas steady as a rock making his way fromthe number one seed to the finals where hefaced Dick Blank who was the second seed.Blank defeated Deshaine, Toupin and Bondbefore he faced Cliff Davis. Davis woulddefeat Blank in the final to capture the SuperSenior Title.

The Open First Flight was another greatflight with Vasko Stefanoski (ShelbyTownship) claiming the number one seed

and marching his way through the bracketinto the finals. His opponent NickVanderginst (Chesterfield) was the sixthseed. Nick and Vasko battled each other for19 holes before Nick Nick captured the tro-phy on the 20th hole.

Senior Division First Flight found PatBurns (Allen Park) stepping through thedivision defeating Mulhern, Houck andFuller to face Albert Woods (Auburn Hills)who defeated Taylor, Pratt and King. Burnswould defeat Woods 7 & 6 in the final matchto claim his trophy.

The Michigan Publinx Golf Associationteamed up with a couple of great venues(Twin Lakes Golf & Swim Club & BlackHeath Golf Club) for another great tourna-ment. Based on the participation andresponse it’s safe to say the Motor City willbe host to more State Match PlayTournaments in the future.

Congratulations toAlex Zeoli, Jef fBarnes, Cliff Davis,

Michigan had four players competing,Chad Johnson (Plymouth), Sam Stark(Hartland), Dean Reid (Webberville) andPhilip Gieseker from Ann Arbor.

All four players got off to a relative goodstart but faded a bit, except Chad Johnson.Chad was able to settle things down and turn

in a score of even par while Dean and Philipslipped to plus three and Sam to plus five.

Seventeen players broke par on theSoldier Hollow course in the first round, giving the Michigan players a chance tomake the field of 64, with good scores in thesecond round.

After the second round was completed, twenty players shot sub par rounds withJames Erkenbeck (San Diego, CA) takingthe “Medalist” honors with a score of 135,followed by T. J. Vogel (Miami, FL), TaylorGooch (Midwest City, OK) with scores of136 and Jace Long (Dixon, MO) with 137.

Chad Johnson from Plymouth qualifiedfor match play and tied for 33rd but the restof the Michigan connection Sam, Dean andPhilip failed to qualify for match play com-petition.

ChadJohnson also had his tournament come tothe end losing his first match to KyleBeversdorf, (Plymouth, MN).

Vogel would continue winning and moveinto the quarter-finals but Long would loseto Beversdorf who has a great run going inmatch play competition.

Vogel and Beversdorf would both wintheir quarter-final match and joining them inthe semi-finals was Kevin Aylwin from NewSmyrna Beach, FL. and Derek Ernst fromClovis, CA.

Ernst just annihilated his opponents throughthe first four matches winning 6 & 5, 5 & 4, 5& 4 and 4 & 3. Derek faced Vogel in the semiwhile Beversdorf squared off against Aylwin.

In the semi-final Vogel turned the table onErnst by claiming a 4 & 3 victory to faceAylwin in the final match who beat Beversdorf2 & 1.

The final match was decisive, short andpretty much over after the first 18 holes. Thefinal match is 36 holes to determine the win-ner but Vogel finished the first 18 holes 10 upand then closed the door shortly after the sec-ond 18 holes began. The annual Frank Syron MemorialTournament is at Pontiac Country Clubevery Forth of July weekend. 144 of thefinest Amateur golfers in the state competein the three-day, 54-hole event.

It is a tribute to Frank Syron, who passedaway in 1969 at the age of 69. He was a tire-less promoter of the game, back in the dayswhen golf wasn’t as popular as it is now. Hewould put on free exhibitions with the topplayers of the day such as Byron Nelson,Jimmy Demaret, Ed Furgol and WalterBurkeno to encourage people to experiencethe game.

Frank Syron came to Michigan in 1918and accepted a job as a caddie master atBloomfield Hills Country Club. He movedto Orchard Lake Country Club as head Pro

in 1926. While there, among the people hetaught was the former Olympic standout andfuture three-time U.S. Women’s OpenChampion, Babe Didrikson Zaharias.

He made a big career move in 1941 whenhe and his wife purchased a run down littlecourse called Pontiac Country Club. Sixdecades later the Syron Family hosts thistournament not as a revenue booster, butrather as a testimonial to the man that start-ed it all with the love of the game of golf.

This year was much like every year withall the top players in the field, warm weath-er conditions and a very competitive finish!

At the end of the first 18 holes it lookedlike it was going to be a three man race withJason May taking the lead with a great roundof 65, followed by Bauer with 66 and

Sorentino with 69. Four other players wouldshoot rounds of 70.

When the second finished, Sorentino hada slim two shot lead over May, Bauer andJaschuk.

With nine holes left in this 54-hole tourna-ment, there was eight players close to thelead and fighting for the trophy, AnthonySorentino, Jason May, Josh Bauer, ScottJaschuk, Ian Harris, Greg Davies, JonathanPauli and Nick Robeson

Sorentino ended up taking control of thetournament by pulling away from the field, building what turned out to be a six shot leadto capture the tournament. May, Jaschuk andHarris would tie for second place.

Congratulations Anthony!
