SLATTERY TIES ITCornell managed to jump out to an early lead, scoring just three minutes into the contest. The lead lasted much of the opening period but sophomore forward Mitchel Slattery (Lino Lakes, Minnesota) tied it with less than two minutes remaining in the period.

SECOND PERIODPenalties plagued the Wildcats in the second peri-od with three calls coming against the Wildcats. The score remained tied for much of the period before the Big Red took scored with an advantage 13 minutes in. The goal gave the Big Red a 2-1 lead with less than seven minutes before the second intermission.

Just over a minute later, Cornell made it a two-goal lead when they netted their third goal of the contest.

The 3-1 score lasted the rest of the period with the Big Red taking their lead into the final period.

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Men’s Ice Hockey (3-7-0, 2-2-0-0 WCHA) dropped their second game of the series, 3-2, Saturday evening to No. 17 Cornell University (4-2-0, 2-0-0-0 ECAC) in the Berry Events Center.

FIRST PERIODThe Wildcats attempted their most shots in a period for the series during the opening 20-minutes on Sat-urday. NMU took nine shots at the net lead by three from sophomore defenseman Philip Beaulieu (Du-luth, Minnesota) and a pair from freshman forward Garrett Klee (Hibbing, Minnesota).

Cornell netted a pair of power play goals in the open-ing period. For the second-consecutive night, the Big Red scored in the opening minutes to take a 1-0 lead. They netted their second power play goal of the eve-ning near the 16-minute mark to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

LOGGINS CUTS THE DEFICITThe score remained the same for much of the second period with the Wildcats killing a pair of power play chances for the Big Red. NMU had an on-ice advan-tage of their own late in the period after a penalty was called on Cornell. Senior forward Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, California) did not let it go to waste, cutting the deficit to one goal.

Loggins netted his second goal of the season with just two minutes to play in the period. Assists on the score went to Beaulieu and sophomore forward Caleb Schroer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin). For Beau-lieu, it was his team leading fifth assist of the season while Schroer picked up his second of the year.

HE DOES IT AGAINMidway through the third period, Cornell added their third power play goal of the game to push their lead back to a pair. Just over a minute later, Loggins sent one into the back of the net for his second goal of the game. His third of the season came at 12:56 while the Wildcats had an on-ice advantage and made it a 3-2 score with seven minutes to play.

Beaulieu picked up his second assist of the contest and pushed his season total to six. Senior forward Adam Rockwood (Coquitlam, British Columbia) also added an assist on the goal, his fifth of the season. The goal for Loggins marked his 15th multipoint game of his career and Beaulieu has recorded multiple points 18 times in his career.

FINALDespite trimming the lead back down to a single goal, the Wildcats were unable to tie the contest over the final seven minutes of play. Cornell grabbed a 3-2 victory in game two with each of the fie combined goals coming in the power play. The Wildcats did manage to outshoot the Big Red, 26-21, on Saturday and held Cornell to just four shots in the third period.

ATTE IN GOALSenior goaltender Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) currently sits at fourth in the NCAA with 258 saves this season after add-ing 18 on Saturday. For his career, Tolvanen has 2,790 saves and needs eight more to pass Volunteer Assistant Coach Dieter Kochan for fifth in NMU history. His save percentage in 2018-19 sits at .908, while his goals against average is 2.62.

NEXT UP The Wildcats will finish up a four-game homestand next weekend when they return to Western Collegiate Hockey Association action. NMU will host a pair of contests with the University of Alaska-Anchorage in the Berry Events Center on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. both nights.

GRANT POTULNY | NMU WILDCATS HEAD COACHGrant Potulny was announced as the third head coach in Northern Michigan University hockey history on April 18, 2017.

In his first season at the helm of the Wildcats, Potulny orchestrated one of the best single-season turnarounds in the country with NMU recording a 25-15-3 record. Despite being picked to finish seventh in the preseason WCHA polls, the Wildcats finished second in the conference standings and advanced to the WCHA Championship Game which they hosted in the Berry Event Center. Potulny’s efforts earned him WCHA Coach of the Year honors.

Potulny spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota, where he helped the Golden Gophers capture six regular-season conference titles and qualify for five NCAA tournaments.

A two-time NCAA and WCHA tournament champion during his playing career at Minnesota, Potulny has also experienced success on the international stage. In 2013 and 2017, he helped the United States win the IIHF World Junior Champion-ships as an assistant coach.

At Minnesota, Potulny worked primarily with the forwards and power-play units and was heavily involved in recruiting. Under his guidance, the Gophers were one of the nation’s top offensive teams.

In 2012-13, Minnesota led the Division I ranks with an average of 3.48 goals per game. Each of the past five seasons, the Gophers av-eraged more than three goals per game and never finished lower than 11th in the nation in this statistical category. They also excelled on the man advantage during that stretch, finishing first in the NCAA in power-play percentage in both 2012-13 (.246) and 2014-15 (.280).

Minnesota reached the NCAA Frozen Four in 2012 and 2014. The Gophers ultimately fell in the 2012 semifinals to eventual champion Boston College and in the 2014 finals to Union College.

Potulny recruited and coached 11 skaters who went on to play in the National Hockey League: Mark Alt, Nick Bjugstad, Hudson Fasching, Erik Haula, Seth Helgeson, Nick Leddy, Kyle Rau, Mike Reilly, Nate Schmidt, Jordan Schroeder and Brady Skjei. Under his watch, seven players also garnered All-American accolades.

From 2000 to 2004, Potulny played at Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management and was the team’s only three-year captain since 1947. As an assistant captain in 2002, he netted the game-winning goal in Minnesota’s 4-3 overtime victory over Maine in the national championship game. He then captained the Gophers to a second national title the following campaign.

Potulny, who finished his collegiate career with 116 points (68g-48a) in 146 career games, went on to play five seasons at the pro-fessional level. From 2004 to 2007, he skated for the Ottawa Senator’s American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton, New York. He also spent time with the AHL’s Hershey Bears (2007-08), Springfield Falcons (2007-08), San Antonio Rampage (2008-09) and Norfolk Admirals (2008-09).

A native of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Potulny was selected by the Ottawa Senators 157th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. During his time at Red River High School, he was a three-time North Dakota state champion. He spent two seasons with the United States Hockey League’s Lincoln Stars and was named the 1999-00 Anderson Cup champion team’s most valuable player.

Potulny and his wife, Melissa, have three children: Jack, Owen and Charlotte.
