Introduction to the Metasys Checkout Tool 2-2

Key Concepts M-Tool

M-Tool is a suite of tools that provides an intuitive and efficient work environment. M-Tool is divided into two major groups of tools:

• Configuration Tools - contains software tools, such as HVAC PRO software, used to support N2 based field controllers

• System Tools - contains Project Builder, Comm Pro, M-Pro, Site Book, Site Manager, N30 Upgrade, and Loader

In addition, there are tools, such as the Metasys Checkout Tool, which run on a Palm compatible handheld device to verify the wiring of controllers on the N2 network or Zone Bus.

For more information on M-Tool, refer to the M-Tool Overview and Installation Technical Bulletin (LIT-693100).

Metasys Checkout Tool The Metasys Checkout Tool provides a semi-automated method to check the wiring of controllers on the N2 or Zone Bus. Once power is supplied to the N2 or Zone Bus controllers, the Metasys Checkout Tool allows you to validate the input/output wiring, communication wiring, and sensor/actuator setup. The tool does not allow the downloading of controllers. The tool is used after installation to verify:

• wiring of N2 or Zone Bus controllers

• addresses of all the controllers

• input wiring by reading the inputs of the controllers

• output wiring by setting the outputs of the controllers

The checkout is typically done before the mechanical system is operational. The data collected by the Palm compatible handheld device is stored in a database and given to the Johnson Controls service technician. The service technician then uses the data to look for commissioning problems.

Key Concepts Poll Types

The Metasys Checkout Tool performs three types of polling:

• N2 Bus - scans the N2 Bus for devices

• Zone Bus - scans the Zone Bus for a single device

• Inputs/Outputs (I/O) - scans the N2 Bus for inputs and outputs of devices

Before the checkout process, use the Metasys Checkout Tool to poll the bus for devices. The Checkout Tool creates a list of the devices found. Then you can select individual devices for the checkout process. For information on the checkout process, refer to the Checking Out Devices (LIT-1201105) chapter.

Figure 3-1 and Table 3-1 further describe these polling options.

Figure 3-1: Poll Type Screen

Table 3-1: Poll Type Options Option Description Device Poll Discovers devices. I/O Poll Discovers inputs and outputs of devices that are online on the N2 Bus. You cannot use

this polling method to discover devices. Use this polling method to poll many sensor types or override many I/Os at one time. See the I/O Poll Options in this table.

N2 Only Discovers devices on N2 networks that do not contain System 91 devices. Use this method for faster polling.

N2/Sys91 Discovers devices on N2 networks that contain System 91 devices such as DX9100s. Zone Only Discovers a single device on the Zone Bus. The Metasys Checkout Tool scans the Zone

Bus for a single device and, if found, adds the device to the Poll Table with a Z in the Bus column. You can poll the Zone Bus for Variable Air Volume (VAV), VAV Modular Assembly (VMA), Unitary (UNT), and Air Handling Unit (AHU) devices only. This option allows you to check out a single device on the Zone Bus.

Address Discovers devices within this user-defined address range. Discovers the following when you select I/O Poll. See I/O Poll in this table. Point Determines which AI, BI, AO, BO, or Actuator point to poll. AI, BI, AO, BO, Act Determines the type of point being polled.

I/O Poll Options

All, Even, Odd Determines the addresses being polled.

Metasys Checkout Tool User’s Guide 3-3

Polling (Discovery) Process Once the polling process begins, the Metasys Checkout Tool adds devices to the Poll Table as they are discovered. An audible beep sounds upon the discovery of each device. At the start of the discovery process, the bus status of all controllers changes to Offline, indicated by an O in the Bus column of the Poll Table. When each controller is discovered, the bus status changes to the type of bus in which the controller resides. For example, an N appears in the Bus column for a controller discovered on the N2 Bus. Table 3-2 identifies which letter in the Bus column corresponds with the different bus types.

Table 3-2: Bus Status Bus Column Letter Bus Type

N N2 Bus X XT Bus Z Zone Bus O Device is offline.

Note: The Metasys Checkout Tool application uses the Palm™ Operating System (OS) System Sound setting. Turning off the System Sound in the Palm OS Preferences turns off the sound in the Metasys Checkout Tool application.

One of the alerts described in Table 3-3 may appear during the polling process.

Table 3-3: Possible Alerts Alert Action The current database contains a different device at address XXX. Check that the correct project is open. Would you like to add the device to the database?

Press Add Device to add the device to the database and continue polling. Press Don’t Add to skip the device and continue polling.

There appears to be another N2 Master on the trunk. Disable all N2 masters before continuing!!!

Press OK, disable all N2 masters (for example, Network Control Modules [NCMs]), and restart the polling process. This error message may appear when attempting to discover devices on the N2 Bus while connected to the Zone Bus.

Warning!!! Possible duplicate N2 addresses at address 1 or address 2.

Note the possible address duplication, press OK, and check the addresses once the polling completes. This error message may appear when attempting to discover devices on the N2 Bus while connected to the Zone Bus.

Note Feature The Note feature lets you enter a text message for a specific device. For example, if a controller has a problem that you cannot fix immediately, you can enter a note as a reminder to fix it at a later time. Refer to the Entering a Note About a Specific Device and Viewing a Note About a Specific Device procedures in this document for information on adding and viewing notes.

Page 39: Metasys Checkout Tool User's Guide

Checking Out Devices 4-4

Override Password Security The Metasys® Checkout Tool offers password security when overriding the outputs of the devices on your system. The default password is 2468. To implement this security feature, change the override password according to the Changing the Override Password procedure in the Introduction to the Metasys Checkout Tool (LIT-1201103) chapter. After changing the password, you are required to enter that password when attempting to override the outputs of a device.

Release Overrides The Release Overrides dialog box (Figure 4-2) appears upon exiting a device checkout form after performing overrides. This feature offers the option to release the overrides or not to release the overrides made on the device.

Figure 4-2: Release Overrides Screen

! CAUTION: Risk of fire hazard and damage to equipment. Leaving some outputs in the ON state could cause severe damage to equipment or impose a fire hazard.

For example, you might turn on a heating element and release the override that would turn on the fan when the heating requirement is exceeded. As a result, the heating element may overheat causing equipment damage or possible fire hazard.

Page 40: Metasys Checkout Tool User's Guide

Metasys Checkout Tool User’s Guide 4-5

VMA Addressing The VMA addressing feature lets you change the N2 Address of VMAs over the Zone Bus only using the Metasys Checkout Tool software. To perform this software addressing, all of the DIP switches of the VMA must be in either the ON position or the OFF position. This feature offers an alternative to changing the DIP switches manually through hardware addressing. Refer to Changing the N2 Address of a VMA on the Zone Bus procedure in this document.

For more information on hardware addressing and other methods of software addressing, refer to:

• VAV Modular Assembly (VMA) 1410/1420 Installation Instructions (Part No. 24-8740-1)

• VAV Modular Assembly (VMA) 1430 Installation Bulletin (Part No. 24-8986-18)

• VAV Modular Assembly (VMA) 1440 Installation Instructions (Part No. 24-9590-0)

AI Scaling When checking out devices, change the sensor type for each AI to match the sensor attached to the input to ensure the correct value of temperature, voltage, current, or resistance is displayed. If incorrect scaling is selected for an analog input, the Metasys Checkout Tool can display an incorrect value for that point. For example, if AI 1 is shown as 1 K Platinum when it should be 1 K Nickel, reconfigure the scaling for that AI to 1 K Nickel. Refer to Configuring AI Scaling in this chapter.

Changing the scaling using the Palm compatible handheld device does not impact the actual device on the N2 Network. The scaling math only occurs in the Palm compatible handheld device for the current device.

Note: To use 1 K Silicon scaling or to support DX, XT, or XTM devices, download the MathLib.prc file from the Checkout folder under Palm Applications on the M-Tool CD.

Project Database The data from each device or controller is saved in the database for the selected project. When all devices have been checked out, Checkout reports can be generated for each project, the project database can be beamed to another Palm compatible handheld device, or the project database can be deleted. For example, use the infrared beaming feature on the Palm compatible handheld device to send the project database to the Johnson Controls representative. See Beaming a Project Database to Another Palm Compatible Handheld Device in this chapter.

Page 41: Metasys Checkout Tool User's Guide

Checking Out Devices 4-6

Use a Personal Computer (PC) with Checkout Conduit software and the Palm Computing HotSync® Manager and a Palm compatible handheld device cradle to generate Checkout reports for each project. To install the Checkout Conduit software, refer to the Introduction to the Metasys Checkout Tool (LIT-1201103) chapter. To generate a Checkout report, refer to Creating a Checkout Report in this chapter.

Checkout Conduit The Checkout Conduit is a software plug-in to the HotSync Manager. Each time a HotSync operation is performed, the Checkout Conduit generates checkout reports on the PC for the Checkout projects in the Palm compatible handheld device.

Note: The Palm Computing HotSync Manager must be installed on the PC before installing the Checkout Conduit software.

Checkout Report When the Palm compatible handheld device is synchronized with the PC, a report is generated on the PC for each Checkout project. Each report document is in Rich Text Format (RTF) and contains the following naming convention: project name + Report.doc. For example, the report name for the JC-NC1-Floor1 project is JC-NC1-Floor1Report.doc. Refer to Figure 4-3 and Figure 4-4 to see an example of the Device Summary and Device Data sections of the Checkout report.

The report document resides in the current HotSync Manager user directory within the Checkout folder created by the Checkout Conduit. The Checkout Conduit must be installed before generating a Checkout project report. Refer to the Installing the Checkout Conduit on a PC in the Introduction to the Metasys Checkout Tool (LIT-1201103) chapter.

Note: The Checkout Conduit overwrites existing reports with the same name in the current user directory. If you wish to save multiple projects with the same name, move the report from the current HotSync Manager user directory to another directory before each HotSync operation.
