Message from the Board Chair and Executive Director

1

This year, the United Way of York County rolled up its sleeves and took a measured look at its business model in the context of a changing fundraising and economic environment in York County. After eight months of review, the end result was a three year action plan, which reaffirms the United Way’s relationship with its partner agencies and begins to realign the organization to those strategies that will produce agreater return. This process would not have been possible without the involvement of several board members, the experience of partner agency representatives, and the commitment of many other United Way volunteers.

The United Way of York County is a volunteer-based organization where the gifts of thousands of individuals are combined to create real impact on the lives of individuals in York County. Volunteers determine the allocation distribution and volunteers govern the United Way. Upon raising in excess of $6.3 million from the workplace campaign, 36 partner agencies were able to reach thousands of individuals in York County with programs that provide measurable impact.

The following pages review a year of significant accomplishments for the United Way of York County in its effort to fulfill its mission “to improve people’s lives by building a strong community through cultivating financial generosity, volunteerism and civic engagement.” It is with a tremendous amount of gratitude that we thank the volunteers, who through their contributions of time, energy, and financial resources, have made our community a better place to live. It is a pleasure and honor to serve in this most generous of communities.

Reading Ready Corners were launched at four locations throughout York County. Located in Family First Health in York City and at New Hope Ministries, Inc. in Dillsburg, Dover, and Hanover, these corners are being used to support the United Way’s focus on ensuring the county’s children are reading proficiently by the end of third grade. By providing reading areas in organizations where families have to wait with their children, we are hoping to entice them to engage with a book. Research completed by the Campaign for Third Grade Reading says that families who interact with their children through reading are building speech and vocabulary skills, and creating logic skills that can help children throughout their entire life.

Day of Action is United Way’s largest day of volunteer service. In June 2014, 70 supportive companies provided 705 volunteers who completed 63 projects at 34 nonprofit agencies all across York County. The volunteers participated in projects that included painting, landscaping, restoration of community buildings and park cleanups, reading to children and playing bingo with older adults among others. In addition, several companies conducted school supply and book drives as their way of making York County great and giving back to the community!

Global Youth Service Day consisted of three projects. Projects included the outdoor beautification of Penn Park and Community Progress Council’s Early Head Start Program. There was also a project where volunteers helped to sort food and pack meal bags at the York County Food Bank. Altogether, 71 youth volunteers participated in the day’s events and provided 213 volunteer hours of service cleaning trash and debris and packing food. This equals an estimated value of $4,913.91 of volunteer time!

Communities in Schools (CIS) started serving five schools in the School District of the City of York with five full time Site Coordinators at the beginning of the 14-15 academic year. CIS Site Coordinators serve the students of Jackson, Goode, Hannah Penn, McKinley, and William Penn. Servicing over 3,700 York students, services have ranged from assisting with basic needs to providing academic assistance, to bullying prevention to assisting with job placement and resume writing. CIS Site Coordinators have worked hard to become an integral part of each school’s fabric ensuring that each service is targeted toward achieving successful outcomes for the students, school and community.

New Threads of Hope worked with United Way of York County to coordinate a clothing donation to United Way partner agencies. The clothing, valued at $230,000, was donated by the Harley-Davidson Foundation and contained new winter coats, hats, gloves, and shirts. A dozen United Way volunteers donated their time to sort and distribute the items that arrived in six large pallets. WOLF lent the use of one of their warehouses to provide the necessary loading docks and space to house a project of this magnitude.

Education Initiatives at the United Way continue to work towards supporting children and their families from birth until graduation. The Early Literacy 100 Book Challenge served eight early childhood centers that serve at-risk children; all centers are partner agencies of the United Way. Ready Freddy continues to thrive, and in 2014 serviced five York County school districts and 273 children. The Youth Court Alliance in William Penn High school, which services truant youth in 9th and 10th grades, completed the year with 50 truancy hearings and cut unexcused absences in that population by 52%. 4

“In 2014 I had the honor of serving as the Chair for the United Way annual campaign. As someone who puts a tremendous commitment into giving back to the community, this role allowed me to take that commitment to a whole new level. I can truly say that the more you give, the more you receive in return. I have seen the impact that the funds raised through the campaign have on York County and I’m proud to be part of that.”
