It was wonderful to return from leave and see so many happy smiling faces of our students. Thank you to Mr Johnston who relieved as principal whilst I was on leave. It is comforting to know the school is in good hands with an experienced deputy principal who can take the helm at a moments notice. Thank you also to Mr Endacott and Miss King who relieved in higher duties over the past months.
FAREWELL YEAR 12
I was sorry to miss our Year 12 celebrations as they left in preparation for the HSC Exams. By all reports they had a wonderful night at the Year 12 Farewell Dinner, and their parents should be very proud of their achievement.
The last of the HSC Examinations was held on Friday which I’m sure is a relief to all, now it’s all over bar the waiting. Best wishes to all students for whatever the future may bring, grasp every opportunity with both hands and make the most of it.
NEW SIGNAGE
As part of our ongoing program of school improvement Stage 1 of our new school signage has been completed. The old perspect signs had deteriorated with age, and the new LED signage looks great. Finalisation of Stage 2 of the signage should be completed by the end of term.

The P and C provide a great opportunity for parents to be involved and support our students and school. I note they have asked for feedback about meeting times, and encourage new parents to come along. Check out their regular items in the Ringer and the P and C Facebook page.
FULL HOUSE FOR KINDER 2017
Mrs Sevil tells me what a wonderful group of Kinder students we have for 2017. Only a few tears so far as part of our Kinder transition program. A full house of 22 students have enrolled for Kinder next year, a continuation of the great confidence the community hold in our teachers and school. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated primary staff, committed to ensuring all students have access to the best possible education.

STAFF ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE
Throughout the year, all staff strive to be the best teachers they can be by participating in a wide range of professional learning opportunities. We’d like to congratulate Mrs Crooks, Mrs Morgan and Miss Garbellini, who have completed a year long course in L3, and innovative and success driven literacy program for Infants children. Mrs Thurston has also recently attended an intensive three day conference in Sydney, to become an accredited numeracy trainer.
Our children are certainly blessed to have such dedicated and excellent educators in our midst – well done!
SCHOOL SWIMMING SCHEME
All students Kinder-Year 6 who are unable to swim safely will be participating in an intensive swimming program in Weeks 8 and 9 of this term. All information and permission notes are being sent home this week.

KINDERGARTEN TRANSITION
Like old hands now, our kindergarten students for 2017 arrived at school on Tuesday ready to play and learn. The students continued to show enthusiasm in the classroom as they listened attentively to ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and created beautiful butterflies with Mrs Martin.
At recess time, the students ate with their Year 4 and 5 ‘buddies’ before playing games on the high rise with the ‘big kids’. The new students have quickly adapted to the school routines as a result of the very helpful and considerate Year 4 and 5 ‘buddies’. These ‘buddies’ have ensured

our new students have a wonderful experience transitioning to Kindergarten as they feel safe and comfortable in our school environment.
After recess, the students demonstrated their counting skills and they are obviously more than ready to begin Kindergarten. The students remained at school until 1.30pm which allowed them to eat lunch and play in the different areas of our playground before being collected by their parents.
The next transition will be Tuesday November 15 and students will attend from 9.00am until 2.00pm. Students will once again be required to pack fruit, a drink bottle, recess food, lunch food and a hat in their school bag.

Why do teachers teach and Head Teachers facilitate and lead their faculties? I believe it is the best profession – rewarding, satisfying and fulfilling because we see social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development in our students – all the time. Yes sometimes we observe students go through a “bad” day, which most likely is a frustrating moment or a poor decision. However, to see the delight in a student’s face - realising they do understand a maths formula, create artworks, recall facts in history, relate to a character in a novel, bowl well in cricket or participate in an excursion and LEARN. To observe compassion, kindness, tolerance, assertiveness, respect and responsibility in your children – as I have seen in our students – as the advertisement says – that is priceless.
So I just wanted to express my appreciation to the students, staff and executive of the school for enabling me to have the opportunity of filling the Head Teacher role.

Secondary ReportBEING A HEAD TEACHER
What are the vital features on a new Head Teachers face? Two ears and one mouth.
Halfway through Term 3, at a morning “Muster”, teachers were told the role of Relieving Head Teacher of the English/History/HSIE/Visual Arts faculty was available for a number of weeks. Fortunately, I was offered the job. I do mean fortunately because it would be a new opportunity for me to test out my people skills and knowledge about education at a slightly different level.
Education has always been about relationships between teachers and students. As a Head Teacher, there is a web of deeper, broader connections. My school days start with hellos to Andrew and Krichelle (who are in early in the morning looking after the maintenance of school), other Head Teachers as well as our office staff who look after finances and school administration like first aid, ordering school supplies and answering all manner of enquiries. During the day, I would be in contact with some students’ parents concerning their child’s progress, behaviour and successes as well as community groups like Rotary who offer our students opportunities to attend camps and student leadership. I found though the most significant part of my day was talking with students about the good, bad and ordinary parts of students’ school days as well as assisting and mentoring teaching staff. Problem solving, interpreting, planning, prioritising, decision making, the role modelling of resilience mean my ears need to be twice the size of my mouth. I know I’ve made mistakes with that element sometimes – when that has happened – apologies are made and the relationships continue to thrive.

THE GRIP LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE DUBBO
Tuesday November 1 a small group of secondary SRC representatives including Harrison Amidy, Hasan Papp, John Magner, Codi Marsh, Lachlan Walker, Tarnisha Winsor and James Hagley attended the GRIP Leadership conference in Dubbo. First on the agenda at the event was an ice breaker activity allowing all school leaders to interact and share ideas from their respective SRC. Following this the schools were broken into two smaller groups with Merriwa’s SRC attending the session called “Thinking out of the Box”, this session had the purpose of broadening the way we think of ideas and concepts. The final session was called “Following through with ideas”, this session was giving us an insight into some techniques to help complete our ideas to their full potential.
Finally our entire SRC at Merriwa Central would like to thank Merriwa Rotary because without their help and support we would not have been able to attend such a great event which has provided us with new and improved skills and knowledge that we gained from the day, thank you Rotary.

What an amazing year we have had in Year 3/4. This term we are very excited to continue our focus on collaborative learning, where students are given the opportunity to learn from each other.
Our English focus this term is Persuasion. We have spent the first few weeks of the term revising how to construct a persuasive text. The students were required to write and present a persuasive speech in an allotted time. Well done to all students for giving of their best. For the remainder of the term students will explore the main themes and ideas represented through persuasive techniques and how this affects our understanding, feelings and connections to the characters, events and ideas of the text. The students will develop their questioning and self-monitoring techniques to enhance comprehension of print and visual text. We also look forward to developing our reading skills further during our Daily 5 time.
In Religion we have been learning about Jesus’ role as a teacher and how Jesus taught people through his words and deeds. We have also learnt that he taught people about the Kingdom of God through special stories called parables.
Over the past few weeks we have covered a variety of maths strands. Our main focus has been addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division. We have used a variety of mental strategies to help solve problems such as the split and jump strategy. We have also learnt about arrays and the different vocabulary for our mathematical skills. We will continue to use concrete materials and hands on activities to assist us to finding the answers to real life problems.
In Science and Technology this term our unit provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of living things. The students have really enjoyed working together to investigate the role of living things in a habitat, eg plants as producers and microbes (micro-organisms) as decomposers. They have been required to gather information about some relationships between living things, eg predator-prey, competitors and mutually beneficial relationships.
The students have been very inquisitive and engaged in their Geography lessons this term which is fantastic! Our unit this term is Places are Similar and Different, and focusses on
Australia and our neighbouring countries. So far the students have investigated the location and geographical characteristics of Australia’s neighbouring countries. We look forward to exploring more countries and examining their similarities and differences to Australia.

These are just some of the safety messages our class have created and discussed as part of our PDHPE lessons this term. Our unit, Drugs Affect Me/Keeping Safe and Healthy encourages students to explore the factors that influence healthy lifestyle decisions and demonstrate an understanding of the decision making process. They examine how the use of drugs such as tobacco and alcohol can cause harm.
Our Dance unit of work provides a sequence of learning experiences based upon the theme of a sports carnival and focuses on the element of dynamics. Students investigate and perform the dynamic qualities of light and strong movements and explore how dance can communicate a range of ideas and feelings. Our Visual Art lessons have been based around the abstract art movement. The students really enjoy experimenting with different techniques and materials to express a feeling or emotion.

Parent Maths sessions are back by popular demand. Miss Paige Farrow – our Maths champion is offering two, one hour Maths sessions for parents this term. Our Choose Maths night, held last term, highlighted to parents how much fun Maths can be and how good it is to be able to work mathematically with your kids.

1. If we are told to remain on site, all personnel on the school site will be evacuated to the library, where we will wait further instructions. Parents will be advised via the Skoolbag App about the situation

REMEMBRANCE DAY
At 11.00am on November 11, 1918, the guns on the western front fell silent after more than four years of warfare. The Germans called for an Armistice in order to secure a peace settlement.
World War I saw the mobilisation of over 70 million people of which over 9 million lost their lives, many with no known grave.
Armistice’s Day was first commemorated on 1919 with 2 minutes of silence as part of the ceremony. After World War II, the commemoration’s name was changed to Remembrance Day. Armistice Day was considered no longer an appropriate title for a day that commemorated the lives lost from all wars.
On the 75th anniversary at the Armistice in 1993, the remains of an unknown Australian soldier was entombed in the National War Memorials Hall of Memory.
Today, Remembrance Day is commemorated across the whole nation. At 11am the nation stops for 1 minute of silence to remember those who died or suffered for Australia’s cause in all wars and armed conflicts. - information taken from Australian War Memorial website.
At Sandy Hollow, we will commemorate Remembrance Day with our ceremony. We encourage members of the local community to join us. Our ceremony will be presided over by a flag detail from Singleton Army Barracks, and our guest speaker this year will be Corporal Wilkinson.
We will also be joined by a very special guest Geoff Gowing, who at 99 years of age, is a local war veteran.
We ask that people arrive at school at 10.15am ready for a 10.30am start. The ceremony will conclude with morning tea in the library.
BUSHFIRE SEASON
It seems over the weekend that the bushfire season has well and truly flared up with a large fire, now under control, at Cessnock and another one at Heddon Greta, it is timely for us to make sure we are Bushfire prepared.
In the event of a fire at Sandy Hollow, there are one of two procedures that we will follow depending on advice received from RFS.

ENROLMENTS ARE OPEN FOR 2017
Do you have a child who will be two years old early in 2017 and are interested in a little time for yourself? We have places available now on Monday for the youngest school goers in our community. There are half days available if that is a better option for your child. Some children benefit from a shorter session to begin with as they adapt to new people and routines. We offer the children a rest each day due to their hectic schedule and other home practices such as nappy changes, transition to toilet trained are followed to continue their progress. On a Monday the emphasis is on settling into our day, play, fun and developing vital communication and self help skills. Socially the party never stops as the children engage and interact with each other and learn valuable lessons through play.
The daily structure for next year will be 2-3 year olds on Monday and children between the ages of 3-5 will be encouraged to attend between Tuesday –Friday. A two day enrolment pattern for the older children is encouraged as we are filling fast for 2017. The promise of a significant fee reduction for the majority of our Pre-Schoolers should equate to more families in the community accessing Pre-School education and all the wonderful benefits that brings to your children such as advancing independence, social, emotional and physical skills and of course cognitive function. As placements are completed we will offer the 3rd day as available to families.
We are also extending our Pre-School day between the hours of 8.00am-3.30pm but feel free to continue to access sessions between 9.00am-3.00pm which coincides well with other local schools and the collection of older children. The longer day is a great option as children edge closer to kindergarten and we hope it will be helpful to working families in the community. It will be the same fee regardless of extended hours or not.
The Merriwa Pre-School and Activity Centre is Meeting the National Quality Standard for Education and Care and we are proud of the fact that we are exceeding the National standard for our relationships with children. We ensure quality through an ongoing plan for improvement. For 2017 our goals are a bit of a mixed bag, which in some ways reflects the seven areas of the

Last Friday we said goodbye for now to the lovely Miss Frazer who has taught us for the past four weeks. On Friday afternoon we enjoyed sharing a yummy afternoon tea with Miss Frazer.
On behalf of the students, I would like to thank Miss Frazer for being here and helping us with all our learning. We really enjoyed having you as a teacher. We’ll all miss you and hope you come back soon.

As we are moving closer towards the middle of the term, it has been lovely having Miss Frazer spend that past four weeks with us. Cassilis Public School has many innovative individualised programs for students and we feel very proud of what the students, the staff and families have achieved by working together in partnership. Luckily, Miss Frazer will be available for casual teaching soon so I’m sure that we will see her again.
STUDENT OF THE WEEK - BROOKE MCLENNAN
Brooke has been voted student of the week by staff and students for her continued hard-working attitude and respectful and safe behaviour towards all students, staff and visitors. Last week, Brooke showed developing strategies when she was solving mathematical problems focusing on fractions and decimals. She used all available class time wisely. In writing, the class were learning more about persuasive writing. Brooke demonstrated a pleasing ability to construct a short piece of writing using appropriate reasons and facts to support the topic. Her structure of her writing and ensuring that it makes sense, has improved through her hard work.
Brooke congratulated her peers during the assembly and was a respectful audience member by singing the National Anthem, School Song and listening when awards were being given out or a teacher was speaking. She was modelling fantastic behaviours to our other students.

PEW REFLECTIONS - LUKE 21:5-19
What do we do when things go wrong? How do we find faith in God when life collapses around us? These are questions all Christians face. the Gospel today gives us a brief insight into the pain and struggle of Luke’s small community who had such faith and hope in Jesus, but life did not appear to be blessed. God wasn’t intervening to save them fromconflict within families and persecution from governments. Luke tries to reassure his community that such discord and trouble is part of a living Christianity and can be expected. Faith in Jesus doesn’t take us out of the world, or permit us to live as some sort of aliens in the world. We are part of a struggling humanity.
Jesus lived at a time when the Jerusalem temple existed and had recently been greatly renovated and made even grander by King Herod the Great. By the time the Gospel is written, the magnificent Temple has been utterly destroyed by the Romans in 70. Many Jews saw this as the end of the world and took this distruction as a sign that God was coming soon. Luke cautions against such false ideas. The end has not yet come and Luke’s community must learn to live in an extended time of waiting. Through Jesus’ words, Luke teaches his community that in this time of waiting there will be hardship and struggle; these are not incompatible with Christian faith and are not to be taken as a sign that God is absent. This Friday is Remembrance Day. The students will be learning more about the importance of this day during their lessons this week. On Friday, at 10:45, we will be holding our Remembrance Day Assembly. We invite all families to come. Merriwa Red Cross will be holding their Christmas Street Stall on November 18 at which a 100 Club, raffle of a handmade Christmas Quilt, a Christmas Bargain table and stall will be operating.
A new directive from Red Cross enabling each branch to direct funds back into the local area for the purpose of assisting those in need means that this year, money raised from this street stall can be directed to helping provide a motorised wheelchair and some school uniforms for two local families.

The Hunter River Group of CWA of NSW has two Educational Grants for 2016. It is very easy to apply and we encourage all students who fit the criteria to fill out the application form and return it to your local branch secretary of CWA. Merriwa CWA Branch Secretary is Robyn McAlister.
1. Hunter River Educational Grant to the value of $500.00 tenable by a student entering Tertiary Education, whether TAFE College or University and who resides within the bounds of the Hunter river Group. Mature age students may apply and the Grant will be awarded on a needs basis. Students entering Tertiary Education please supply a letter of recommendation from the Principal or Deputy Principal or your Year Advisor. Mature age students please supply a letter of recommendation that will support your application
2. Jean Latham Educational Grant to the value of $300.00 tenable by a Year 11 student entering Year 12 and residing within the bounds of the Hunter River Group.

SEVILLE ORANGE MARMALADE
Ingredients
• 4 Seville orange (about 500g/1lb 2oz in total), scrubbed
• 1.7l water• 1kg granulated sugar
Method
1. Halve the oranges and squeeze the juice into a large stainless-steel pan. Scoop the pips and pulp into a sieve over the pan and squeeze out as much juice as possible, then tie the pulp and pips in the muslin. Shred the remaining peel and pith, either by hand with a sharp knife or in a food processor (a food processor will give very fine flecks rather than strips of peel). Add the shredded peel and muslin bag to the pan along with the water. Leave to soak overnight. This helps to extract the maximum amount of pectin from the fruit pulp, which will give a better set. It also helps to soften the peel, which will reduce the amount of cooking needed.
2. Put the pan over a medium heat, then bring up to a simmer. Cook, uncovered, for 1½-2 hrs, until the peel has become very soft. (The cooking time will be affected by how thickly you have cut the peel.) To see if the peel is ready, pick out a thicker piece and press it between your thumb and finger. It should look slightly see-through and feel soft when you rub it.
3. Carefully remove the muslin bag, allow to cool slightly, then, wearing the rubber gloves, squeeze out as much liquid as possible to

extract the pectin from the fruit pulp. Discard the bag and weigh the simmered peel mixture. There should be between 775-800g; if less, then top up with water to 775g.
4. Put 4 small plates in the freezer, ready to use when testing for setting point. Add the sugar to the pan, then put over a low heat. Warm gently so that the sugar dissolves completely, stirring occasionally. Do not boil, before the sugar is dissolved.
5. Increase the heat and bring up to the boil but do not stir while the marmalade is boiling. After about 5 mins the marmalade will start to rise up the pan (it may drop back and then rise again) and larger bubbles will cover the surface. After 8-10 mins boiling, test for setting point. Times will vary according to the size of the pan – in a large pan this takes 7-8 mins, in other pans it may take 12-15 mins. As setting point can be easily missed it’s better to test too early than too late.
6. To test the setting point: take the pan off the heat and allow the bubbles to subside. Take a plate from the freezer and spoon a little liquid onto the plate, then return to the freezer for 1 min. Push the marmalade along the plate with your finger. If setting point has been reached then the marmalade surface will wrinkle slightly and the marmalade won’t run back straight away. If it’s not at setting point, return to the heat and boil again for 2 mins before re-testing. Repeat until setting point is reached. If you have a sugar thermometer, setting point is reached at 105C, but it’s good to do the plate test as well.
7. Leave the marmalade to stand for 10 mins or until starting to thicken. If there’s any scum on the surface, spoon it off. Transfer the marmalade to sterilised jars. Cover with a wax disc (wax side down) and seal. When cold, label the jars and store in a cool, dark cupboard. The marmalade should keep for up to a year.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JAM, JELLY, CONSERVES, MARMALADE, AND FRUIT SPREADS?

JAM
Jam is a thick mixture of fruit, pectin, and sugar that is boiled gently but quickly until the fruit is soft and has an organic shape, yet is still thick enough
that it spreads easily and can form a blob. In addition to being a spread, jams are also good for fillings.
JELLY
Jelly is made from sugar, pectin, acid, and fruit juice and is a clear spread that is firm enough to hold its shape. Jellies can also be made from ingredients other than fruit, such as herbs, tea, wine, liqueurs, flowers, and vegetables.
MARMALADE
Marmalade is a citrus spread made from the peel and pulp of the fruit. Marmalades are cooked for a long time and have no pectin, and are used as spreads and glazes.
PRESERVES
Preserves are spreads that have chunks of fruit surrounded by jelly.
FRUIT BUTTER
Fruit butter is a smooth and creamy spread that is created by slow-cooking fruit and sugar until it reaches the right consistency; these types of spreads are not always translucent and are often opaque. Fruit butters are best used as a spread and a filling.
CONSERVES
Conserves are made with dried fruits and nuts and are cooked. They have a very thick and chunky texture. Conserves work very well as a spread and as a condiment for meats and cheeses.

Merriwa Cricket ClubSaturday brought our first home game that we got to play for the season as our first game was a washout, as we played on our well prepared wicket on Number One Sportsground against Murrurundi. The weather was good apart from the wind that kept constant throughout the day, which made for some interesting cricket!
Merriwa won the toss and elected to bat. Our batters impressed in front of a home crowd, with skipper Jon making a handy 23 opening, Will chalking up 24 runs, and Seth holding up a fantastic middle order innings for 55 runs, scoring 8 boundaries in the process. The tail showed a slight wag before the end of our innings with Justin scoring two boundaries in just three balls, before losing the last wicket and leaving our total at a season best 150 runs. H. Hobdon from Murrurundi recovered from bowling 4 wides in his first over to put in a respectable 3/23 off his 8 overs, and J McLymont bowled an equally impressive 3/25 off his 8.
After the lunch break, Murrurundi’s innings commenced in a similar way to ours, but a fantastic effort from our bowlers and fielders kept us in the match. Will and Seth bowled with their usual blistering pace, with Will bowling 3/13 off his 8 overs (including five maidens) and Seth following up his half century with 3/36, finishing off Murrurundi in his 7th over with an incredible triple wicket maiden. Also notably in the field was an impressive performance from Jay-me; after dropping a skyed ball, he threw the ball at the stumps from at least 20 metres and run out one of their top scorers.
In the end, we scored our first win of the season, defeating Murrurundi by 19 runs. It was great to play at home and get lots of support from the

CONGRATULATIONS to our four fabulous athletes of the week…Wills Mulligan for brilliant listening and trying hard in all areas of training, Grace Campbell (Tots) for having the confidence to try new games by herself, Ben Patterson for running really well in the 200m and 400m and Mikayla Telfer for her amazing natural high jump ability. Brilliant work kids, and a great start to your season!
A note for families new to Little Athletics, Merriwa runs their nights a little differently to larger clubs. Because we don’t have all the equipment, loads of athletes in each age group, heaps of parents to run events, a perfect 400m track (ours is around 330m) or throws and jumping gear we use our Monday nights to train and then go away to carnivals held at other clubs that do have all the gear! In this way, our athletes are exposed to the huge benefits of competition – comps give athletes a reason to come to training, to work on their technique, improve fitness, stamina and discover their own abilities and most importantly, their confidence grows astronomically.
Athletes also learn to lose, to understand what it takes to be their best (no, you generally don’t just ‘win’ you actually have to work at it) and gives them an inner confidence to help deal with life’s challenges because they become used to that feeling of ‘butterflies’, of anticipation, of excitement and they learn how to manage those feelings… all these things help with confidence building in lots of other areas like preparing for tests, exams or public speaking – whatever else makes you feel nervous!
We have seen huge development and improvement in all our athletes that go away even to one or two carnivals a year. If you can wrangle it, we highly recommend attending at least one carnival – there are usually two or three to choose from each term. The next one is Lake Macquarie who have kindly invited us along to a one day ‘run for fun’ carnival on Sunday 20 November at the Glendale stadium. This is a synthetic track, and the largest one in our region. It is also where most school interschool carnivals for the Hunter are held and where our Regional carnival will be held so a great ‘practice’ venue. This carnival is open to all age groups, including Tiny Tots with medals for participation an added

We have had an email from Scone in relation to a refereeing course which we are hoping to get interested persons for. This is open for anyone playing in the senior competition or who currently referees any of the games. We hope to assist those interested. Remember that once you are ticketed, your game payment goes from $10.00 to $15.00.
Numbers are needed to order the course booklets and arrange numbers with David Casson as soon as we can.
At this point the sessions will be held on Tuesday November 15, Scone RSL - 6.00pm start. Those wishing to attend must complete an online component which reduces the time at the course. A copy of the certificate issued (takes a couple of hours) needs to be brought along. The courses generally cost $45.00.
A $20.00 deposit needs to be left before booklets are ordered to indicate they will come, we get the documentation and they don’t show. If we can get 8-10 people then David would be happy to complete the course here in Merriwa.
